How I Shoot season 3 is slowly coming to it's end and after this one there is only one episode left. In today's video I am pushing Kodak Tri-x 400 two stops to 1600 and I shot the film with my Hasselblad X-Pan in Bangkok. These days I shoot more color than black and white and this was only the second time that I shot Trix-400. Usually, I shoot HP5+ which is a film that I really like for it's versatility.
Scanned and developed at home. I used Kodak HC-110 (B) developer.
Hope you enjoy the episode, see you in the next one! :)

One of the most productive photo-walk videos I’ve ever seen.
Sheeesh man. Love how you just get in there and capture people. These are such beautiful little moments you got.
Your videos are always awesome man. Much love
Thank you very much Muhammad!
They were beautiful. If you don't mind what were the Aperture and Shutter speed did you use?
I'm amazed at how you get great pictures so fast. Sometimes it takes me months to burn a 36 exp roll.
Thank you! With an Xpan it's only 20 shots though. 😂
you all prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly lost the login password. I love any assistance you can offer me!
@Mitchell Russell Instablaster :)
@Declan Kristian thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Declan Kristian it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my ass!
You nailed it man. It was like a fast video game. The lady with the umbrella is my favourite. Trix and xpan is a killer combo.
Thank you Dimitris!
Fantastic, great use of the format too, compositions excellent 🤓👍
I liked the Tri-X pushed. The photos this time around looked great. Are people in Bangkok as casual about having their photos taken as they appear in the video? If so, nice to see that urban paranoia isn't everywhere.
Thank you Bob! Yes, people in Thailand generally are not as paranoid as in the west. 👌
Awesome video! You are so good at this! It’s inspiring.
Thank you Gabriel!
Love the combination! Though, to be fair, I think I'd love the X-Pan combined with anything. The picture of the lady and daughter at 6:39 is my favorite - beautiful composition & light.
Thank you very much Jonathan!
Fantastic results and amazing that people were so open to being photographed. What aperture and shutter speed were you using when pushing to 1600?
It doesn’t matter if people are open or not. Just work
These photos are beautiful! Just wondering what aperture you were using and were you metering for the shadows?
Thank you! I was around f8-11 and the camera was set to A which works very well on the Xpan. 👌🏼
I really like how you aproach to the subjects. Sorry for my bad English
Thank you very much!
Enjoyed this episode so much I forgot about the pushing bit (which is great. I will try that next roll next roll)
Thank you! Give it a try, it's awesome!
whaa! you were in bangkok while i was there? it wasn't as busy around that time right?
Sorry if you mentioned this at some point, but what lens do you have on the Xpan? 28mm?
Hello Robin👋! Again, a lot of very nice pics🤩👍! My favorite is the lady at 5’40’’. Very nice combination of shadows and light. All in all I am really astonished how good this ISO 400 rated film looks when pushed to 1600. And again it’s amazing how close you can get to the people without any problem😅!
Thank you very much Axel!
I like all the photos...especially the one of the two guys where one was taking a selfie.
Thank you Bert!
Your approach and timing make for some beautifully real photos. Great stuff.
Wow the Kodak Tri-X pushed to 1600 looks really good 😱 .. Tri-X + XPan with flash and Snake alley 🤯🤯🤯
Thanks mate! You really wanna go back there that's for sure. 😜
@@therealsirrobin Already booked us a room 5 nights snake alley special .. ha ha ha ha
Great video and even greater photos! Do you remember the aperture and the shutter speed settings during this shooting?
Thank you! The camera was set to aperture priority, ISO to 800 ans aperture f8-11.
the_real_sir_robin thank you for getting back! So you pushed a stop with an ISO and a stop with aperture/shutter speed.
thanks a lot for this episode. i love it! amazing photos!
Thank you!
I'm partial to the X-Pan videos because of the cinematic look that Robin is mastering the compositions within. Liked the inky blacks in this one and am wondering what a night shoot would might look like.
Thank you! Night shoot will come next week but different film(s) though.
Super result, i love so much the grain! I have only push it to 800 iso, but i definitely need to push it more😎
Thanks for the amazing video and phictures!
Thank you! Go for it!
Another great episode! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Great job with composition and finding frames that tell a story!
Did you push to 1600 in order to get f11 as it looked like a warm summers day where iso 100 works well!
Thank you! First and foremost I wanted to get more contrast. A positive side effect was that I could stop down the lens while keeping reasonable shutter speeds.
Great results, great combination.. thanks
Thank you Thomas!
Waow these are great shots... well done !!! :-)
What developer do you use to process tri-x400 at 1600 ? And how long do you develop them?
Thanks again ;-)
Nice work, love the tri-x!
Thank you!
4:42 👍🏻👍🏻
4:56 Good reflexes
Well about combination X-Pan with anything is always good 🙂.
The thing that I don’t understand is push to 1600 to shot in good daylight. I always have seen push as a recourse when the film nominal speed not match to available light. May be I’m too old because even in digital I refuse to use high ISOs until it’s absolutely necessary 😀.
Thank you! It's to get more contrast out of the film and to be able to stop down the lens a bit more.
Awesome pictures
The last picture is interesting because it still has some information in the lights. were you able to recover the lights in post-production or were the images presented without post-production (directly from the scanning device and embedded in the video)? sorry for the many questions.
thank you for the video.
Thank you! Scanning always has some editing involved, especially if I do it myself since I use a mirrorless to digitize my negatives.
Hi Robin,
I have and shoot an Xpan also, but I noticed you are not getting any vignetting. What is your secret? What f stop are you using?
Thanks for your videos!
5:40 in my opinion it is the best of this episode
Coool, usually i pushed trx at 1600 in the night. Cheers
Of course, it's an option too. I push HP5 for instance mostly in the daytime.
Love Tri-x and the xpan pairing looks great. 👍🏾
Thank you Talya! 🙂
Many great photos here
Thank you Todd!
Xpan work’s always on your shots ! Looks good !
Thank you! 🙂
Man, your timing is impeccable!
Thank you Olly!
What camera are you using to record this walk through?
Cool camera👍
takes iron balls to just go up to people like that.
Haha, thank you!
Hello Sir Robin! Does the Sunny 16 method works even if you’re pushing the film? for example im shooting the tri x at 1600, 1/1000, f16
Of course it also applies when pushing film. However, I barely use sunny 16. I got pretty good at guessing and that works for me personally just fine.
Wow so good Video.
Thank you!
is there HIS season 4? this channel is so gooooooooood
Thank you! Let's see if there will be a Season 4.😃
@@therealsirrobin looking forward to it
I’m relatively new to shooting film so bear with me on this question:
To push 400 speed film to 1600, do you just set the ASA dial to 1600? Or did you “push it” during developing?
Pretty sure you push it in developing
On the dial
Both . You trick the camera and then you over develop
@@nickfanzo okay so why not just use 1600 speed film then? Is pushing (and developing) 400 speed film to 1600 have any benefit over just shooting 1600 speed film?
@@alexblaze8878 it has a different look to it . When you push you are making your shadows dark and under exposed. People push when they want that high contrast (black shadows) look. If you use 1600 speed film you will still have shadow detail and less contrast
Liked it looked real old and grainy. ☺️
Thank you very much! 🤗
excellent
Thank you!
I wonder how many percent are in focus of your images when taking portraits, since most of your work is manually focused?
Didn't do the math but most of the time it works out.
@@therealsirrobin I am using the Nikon F3HP since I am using more modern lenses (Milvus 2/50 and Milvus 1.4/85) I get more in focus at wide f-stops. Lets say 70%.
I'm still confused when it comes to pushing film. Does pushing to 1600 mean to set the camera's ISO to 1600? Or is it solely done in development?
You do both.
vanslem6 so when I want the film developed, I tell them I pushed the film to ISO 1600 so they do the same?
@@proletenschwein Yes, tell them to push the film +2 stops. They'll likely charge you and extra couple dollars, and I either write 1600 or +2 on the notes part of the film canister. Keep in mind though it won't make the camera see in the dark, you still need some light.
Of course if you shot the roll at 800 you would have them 'push' process the film 1 stop. You could also have the lab 'pull' the film if you were to overexpose it by doing the opposite (-1, -2, etc.), however, generally people overexpose the stuff on purpose and process normally.
@@proletenschwein Just to make sure we're on the same page, this is if you're shooting a 400iso film and pushing 2 stops.
vanslem6 thank you. My understanding was still a bit nebulous.
dude that Ripcurl T-shirt tho :D
Have a bunch of those. 😁
welcome to Bangkok 😊"sawasdee"
Thank you!
Did you do grain deduction in post?
Of course not! 👌
So now I have to buy an Xpan. So much for saving up some money. Fuck
Try to resist! 😀
Great video! We definetly want to shoot one day a Hasselblad XPan :D Maybe we can do collab one day ;) Wir kommen auch aus Deutschland :)
Thank you! Sure, that's totally possible. 👍
It gets really contrasty. Not really my cup of tea the way it reproduces skin tones that way. HP5 pushed at 1600 seems more suitable IMHO.
Nico, I also prefer HP5!
The clean Black and White film shots don't reflect the look and feel of the streets in the video.
Someone said it's grainy and you think it's clean. Interesting to see how different perceptions can be. 😃
