I also have one, but when I updated it a few years ago to iOS 9 it got so slow that it literally takes 10 seconds to load an image in the gallery. Whether I'm connected to the internet or not. It's a major inconvenience.
Another reason for removing the headphone jack was to prepare everyone for the iPhone X. Apple knew that the iPhone X will already be a controversial phone. The notch and removal of the home button would take some getting used to. They knew that they would not be able to have a headphone jack on the iPhone X because they needed to fold the display over itself in the bottom part of the device to achieve the bezel-less look. That is way none of the Android phones have done away with the chin, because you need to house the display components somewhere. To get that look, Apple folded the display over and mounted the display controllers at the back of the device. You cannot get a headphone jack through the display. Furthermore, there was no space for the headphone jack at the top. If you look at how densely packed everything is up there: Two rear cameras, both with OIS, the full set of depth sensing sensors, and Apple mounts its logic board, chipset and everything at the top of the device, opposite the camera sensor. They literally could not put the jack anywhere. The AirPods was a two fold approach. Apple envisioned a seamless wireless future and knew that they could achieve it with their hardware and silicon team. Secondly, they knew that is they did not have a great user experience alternative to a wired connection for their customers, they would be stuck using often unreliable Bluetooth options at the time. People criticize Apple for what they seeing right now. They do not stop to think that what we see now from Apple was decisions that were made 2-to-3 years ago. Apple's teams work on projects that we will not see in the marketplace for another couple of years.
Matthew Jardine not just a couple of years.. we may not see their self driving car for the better part of a decade.. who knows what else they are doing?

OnePlus Instagram comment sections were FLOODED with keep the headphone jack, reviewers asked for stereo speakers and wireless charging, and they didn't listen. I disagree with planned obsolescence, reason being sure my 4S only lasted two years but in that two years their CPU’s got 200% faster, and they switched to a 64 but architecture. However I’m on year 3 with my iPhone 7 running the iOS 12 GM and it still feels like a brand new phone.
Ya. I disagree as well. I find THIS specific conspiracy theory to be ironic cuz Apple products are known for their longevity and good aging. Yet, they're accused of planned obsolescence *facepalm*
RTG Your iPhone 7 running iOS 12 felt like a new phone because iOS 12 was probably the 1st iOS update that actually made most devices faster. Prior to iOS 12, older devices generally get slower after each updates. Apple was caught slowing down their phones during iOS 11, and they released iOS 12 that actually sped up phones possibly to make up for their mistakes.
Cancer Lord Sure, Apple devices get many years of updates for additional features. However, it’s a fact that an iPhone 5s on iOS 7 is faster than one on iOS 12. In terms speed and battery, planned obsolescence is very real.
cjcq7 notice how I said iOS 12 GM, I had been running it for a week at the time of that comment. My comment was not exclusive to my phone running iOS 12. They were slowing down phones with depleted batteries to increase stability. My phone was not affected by that as the battery was in good health. My comment still stands today running iOS 13. However I will likely be upgrading to the 12 Pro once it is released, looking forward to wireless charging and 4K at frame rates higher than 30 FPS :)
cjcq7 Apple still slows down older phones (with depleted batteries) that never stopped happening. The only change is that the user can now disable it, risking stability
No it’s because they have to optimise every android update for tons of devices like they relased 40 devices (phones) in 2019 so it would be hard to optimise the android update for each one since they are so many in lots of different shapes and size and don’t even get me started on tweaking the update for phones like the Galaxy S9 where they have to tweak android so it supports the iris scanning. I don’t think Samsung was purposely trying to plan obsolescence since I have an s6 and it’s still going strong till today
The “right to repair” movement is gaining traction, and no one is more opposed to it than Apple. Apple charges absurd amounts for repairs and component replacements (get a screen replacement elsewhere and you'll see the massive price difference). Admittedly, generally their hardware is of good quality, so I've never needed to buy AppleCare. However, those who do pay for AppleCare shouldn't have to pay twice the cost for, say, a RAM upgrade, if it's compatible hardware installed by a licensed technician. And if a non-Apple technician does a minor repair on an Apple product, Apple won't guarantee any subsequent repairs on the phone, and may charge full price regardless of whether they can fix it or not. I know this from personal experience: I had to my screen replaced on my iPhone 6, but my town had no Apple Store so I had to get someone else to replace it. A year later Bendgate destroyed the digitiser. Apple said they were going to charge me £120 for a replacement screen and digitiser, even though the screen was undamaged, and they told me it was a risky repair because the fact I'd had an unofficial screen replacement a year prior meant that they could offer no guarantees that my phone wouldn't become a brick after the repair. (Obviously I declined the repair; thankfully I soon inherited a 7+ from my brother.) I understand that a company like Apple, whose hardware is designed to work in a particular way, might get antsy allowing others access, but designing proprietary screws that are laced with chalk so they can tell when their devices are opened? That's a bit much.
I repaired my iPhone 7's screen with a third party. It didn't have multitouch,it would only register one finger at the time. So I decided to purchase a more expensive screen at a different place. This one did have multitouch but it broke after one drop with a case AND screen protector. Both places did say they offer guaranty but the guy at the first place pretended he didn't know me and I had not purchased it there (even with the receipt) and the second one said it was my fault for dropping it. Yeah, I'm never going to buy from anyone but Apple anymore.
I’m so sick of hearing that removing the headphone jack was to “force” people to buy AirPods or Beats headphones. There are thousands of much cheaper brands of wireless headphones and no one can force you to spend hundreds of dollars when there are options for around $20 that are almost as good. People need to stop with that BS. They’re not the ONLY company who makes wireless headphones
@jfktruthseeker420 actually for adapter. Charging cable is still there in the box. And there are many better options for adapters from the likes of anker and more.

The oddest one i have had was a day I woke up with a headache. Opened an app, maybe Facebook, and there was an ad for advil. I have never once looked up advil and this is the only time I have ever had an ad for it.
I definitely don’t agree that planned obsolescence is a true theory (in the software side), because if they wanted to. They could just not provide updates for older devices. Also, iOS 12 was essentially created to address speed up old devices.
As for the whole somebody using Face ID against you thing, hold the power button and one of the volume buttons for a second or so and then press cancel on the menu that pops up. After that it’ll require a password before it accepts Face ID.
I got those “relevant” ads every other day until I uninstalled UA-cam, chrome, and Facebook and just got to those through safari. Never got one of those creepy ads again
We bought a printer recently from a store, not online. Ever since then I’ve been getting ads for printers and ink for the same brand we bought. I never searched anything to do with a printer on my phone. It’s so scary.

I actually think the planned obsolescence thing is entirely false! I'm using an iPhone 6s in 2020, running iOS 13.5, and also it's *jailbroken* and I'm not experiencing any battery issues.
8:30, if you have “Require attention for Face ID” turned on, you can simply close your eyes, or refrain from looking at your phone and avoid this situation. There are also Privacy Laws in effect that legally protect you in this situation.
One thing you forgot to mention about the removal of the headphone jack. Not only was the theory to boost the sales of airpods, but you also have to take into consideration that Apple just recently (at the time) purchased Beats By Dre for One Billion Dollars. So not only was it to increase sales of airpods, but also boost sales of their newly acquired company's Bluetooth products
Apple bought Beats for $3 billion back in 2014, around the same time the iPhone 6 was introduced which still had a headphone jack. They already owned Beats by the time they had removed the headphone jack. Perhaps they did want to boost Beats sales but I don’t believe that since the Beats line is doing fine on its own.
I feel like it went down like this they were gonna take of the headphone jack for the x and maybe the 8 but then since they were releasing air pods they just went like oh might as well do'em at the sane time
5:40-6:40 those are software issues with the os, not Apple conspiracy theories. It’s not like other companies do that. *cough* *cough* google, Facebook *cough* *cough*
I don’t think that the AirPods conspiracy is true because it was clear when the AirPods launched they were low on stock and had to wait 6 weeks to get them so apple wasn’t ready for it.
I agree with sealing phones it makes waterproofing better and allows for more stuff inside but some other things that apple does like disabling home buttons if you replace them is definitely anti consumer
planned obsolescence is a conspiracy? No. It's a well known trend that's widely use across all industries. Apple is no exception. Hell, apple openly admits to it, as they mentioned they were throttling older models because they were unable to handle new software. The unwillingness to expand the longevity of their older phones is planned obsolescence. They had other options, including capping the iOS version older devices can upgrade to and working to ensure backwards compatibility. Other examples of this include apple's cheap materials. This is especially prevalent in their macbook lineup, in which I don't believe a single year has gone by where a they didn't have issues with failure related to design flaws. Hinges, gpus, using the wrong transistor in one model. Louis Rossmann, who is a tech who specializes in repairing apple devices, has an excellent video on the repeated design failures of apple's mac books and I encourage you to look him up for indepth understanding of why apple devices have sub par quality. This use, however, of sub par quality, IS planned obsolescence. It's not a conspiracy at all. Also, I'd like to append to this that torx screws are not for aesthetics. I'm 3:29 seconds into this video, and I'm finding more and more an air of denial. I get that this is an apple geared channel, but fluffing the truth or outright ignoring it is a poor practice in my opinion.
0:55 "not only Apple" That part is interesting to me. I got an Android 6 phone in mid-2017 and it's still on Android 6. Now the manufacturer has discontinued it, but still, it annoys me still that they had shipped a significantly dated version of Android on it and just didn't give a flying f*** about it a few months later. Worst of all, there are no more security updates for Android 6.
4:24 Did you convenently forgot that litereally nothing on a modern macbook is user replaceable, while on most windows laptops you can upgrade at least the storage and ram, and replace the battery?
I hope this vid is a joke. “Planned obsolescence” is something that is obviously designed for every phone but with apple they be giving you the newest update 6-7 years after that phone comes out! Meanwhile Samsung does 2 years at MOST.
Planned obsolescence for iPhone and iPad is not true now, the iPhone 5s that I previously owned I used it from iOS 7 until iOS 12 which lasted for 6 years and any Android phone hasn’t reached the longevity of iPhones
The direct advertising is not a theory.. the program is called “Alfonzo” and it is in almost every app at this point and it’s there to listen for advertisement cues to advertise specific items to a the user
6:53 its interesting, even apple music listens to you. I love music to begin with, and one day, I started learning and speaking German, in about 2 weeks, Rammstein was recommended to me in apple music...... Rammstein is a German Industrial Metal Band......
The headphone jack is obsolete. Apple didnt remove it so people would buy their wireless headphones. Its because its the only way that the industry would move in. Its the same reason they removed the floppy drive, the CD drive or the usb A port.
CD and floppy got replaced by better alternatives naturally. USB A and the headphone jack worked fine. USB C was better than USB A and C would replace it eventually, but the headphone jack had no better alternative. It did it's job perfrctly fine and there was no reason to replace it with anything else. It isn't obsolete, it's just old. Fir the headphone jack to be obsoleted there needs to he something that costs either the same or less and is better in every single way. There is no such thing, so no, it is not obsolete.
The headphone jack IS obsolete. There is a better alternative. It is called Bluetooth. Try wireless. Once you've tried it, you'd never want to go back ever again. And professionals don't need it because 1. No professional works on a iPhone for their mixing and 2. DJs use headphones that connect via USB...
The problem is, when you not use headphone jack and not close it. The female and male plug became dirty and mess with your sound.it happen with my zenfone 3 and s8.
These type of comments are really bloody annoying. Please explain how headphone jacks are "obsolete" before making a stupid statement that is not true.
The iPhone 5S from 2013 will still get iOS 12 after 5 years. Can't say the same for the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4, and LG G2 from the same year. Every company has planned obsolescence, some worst than others.
I can never believe apple has planned obsolescence, i've been a long time apple user and i still use rlly old hardware for 7-8 years ago and the only thing that broke over time was the battery, but all these products still work and they work better then years ago when i bought them
As a person who has repaired and owns many older Apple products..anyone who thinks that Apple does planned obsolescence is just wrong..slowing a phone to make up for a weak battery is not planned obsolescence. Their answer to the slowing down phones was sound and though they should have been more transparent about it, what they did was reasonable..i'd rather have a slower phone than a phone that crashes and restarts. There are people who still use iPhone 4s's today..4 friking s's..we are talking 9 year old phones. It wouldn't make sense for planned obsolescence by giving multiple main OS updates and apps being supported many years after OS updates stopped. Samsung and Huawei barely ever give more than 2 or 3 updates..Motorola almost never updates lower end devices..wheres the conspiracy with those companies?.. The headphone jack had to go, those things date back to 1878. Its the same with the all USB C Macbook..If users aren't forced to change they would never change and the complete changeover from wired to wireless or USB 3 to USB C would be delayed even more... but when you are forced to, it helps push the technology and Apple had the balls and the resources to make these moves. Also, the headphone jack too up valuable space inside the phone.
I don't think most major tech companies try to make their old products obsolete, it's just that technology advances fast, and that means that developers will make apps catered to the new and faster technology.
About the planned obsolescence... I don't think it's actually programmed into the software. Rather, they're doing it in a smarter way. Via the RAM. Various tests hav shown that processor speed actually goes up through updates, but the overall phone slows down. Why? Because bigger OSs with more features require more RAM to run, and every single Apple mobile device has little RAM. This means that as newer OSs are installed, there is less RAM for the apps themselves to run. Less RAM means crashes due to a critical component not being accessed in the RAM fast enough(maybe compressed) or slow app launches due to the phone constantly having to clear out apps to have enough RAM to launch the new app.
#1 My old I phone lasted 4 yrs. (my parents bought it used cause I was young) it started acting EXTREMELY weird the battery lasted 10 minuets, it turned off randomly, it stayed really hot even when not in use, and it glitched. I recently bought the iPhone 7 Plus. It is sooo much better but sooo much money like dang😂
What you can do (and what I do) is you allow Facebook for example to access your microphone so you can do what you need to do with it, and when you finish just go into settings and turn off facebooks access to your microphone so that way you can do what you want to do with the camera or microphone, and also prevent Facebook from targeting you with ads by turning mic access off when your done.
Avocado Jeff you lose out on new features and security updates, enticing you into buying the newest and greatest android has to offer, and the cycle repeats.
Remy Like I said, missing out new features doesn’t make your phone useless. Planned obsolescence means that your device literally breaks after a certain amount of time.
7:17 I was watching a show called What's Wrong With Secretary Kim, and I did not search about the show prior on my phone ever, I typed W and Google auto filled everything. It was so spooky. I do have Google Assistant on Always Listening mode, so that makes me believe it's listening out for more than my Okay Google command. This started ever since I installed 7.0 Nougat, and it has gotten more accurate at predicting what I want since I installed 8.0 Oreo. Even Instagram and Facebook can predict what I'm interested, even without any prior input such as liking a photo, using a hashtag, searching for accounts or following, because I was just talking to my mom about fries and cheese burgers, then McDonald's ad with fries and cheese burgers popped out of my Instagram feed minutes after having the conversation with my mom. I had my phone with me.
I do experience privacy issues, I notice the political ads I see are based on my region, and I also notice when I have conversations with someone about a product, an ad on the website that I am at will show up for that specific product.
I don’t know what phone that is at 3:32, but it’s not an iPhone. No iPhone has slots for the speaker grill. Always round holes. Another example of this vlog’s INACCURACIES!!
Planned obsolescence is the rule for anything you buy except diamonds. Since we live in this word, everything is faded to break, disassemble or die. It’s the chaos theory
A product called Timerunner will allow an administrator of a PC laptop sold to an innocent person to control all of that person's Apple computers and devices and will allow that person to control any of Apple's computers, or Ipads remotely. And furthermore monitor conversations, and even take photos and videos from the internal cameras without the knowledge of the new laptop owner. I was a victim of this when a Windows 10 with Timerunner was sold to me.
Fun fact, Apple loses money on ever repair that they do, not sure how that makes this dumb theory hold water (source- co worker was an Apple genius for 4 years). AirPods are used by everyone and are whole heartedly loved by even my most android loving friends because of how little they are. Also they took like 6 months after the 7 was released for the AirPods to even come out
I have questions. First: if Apple Watches support iPhones, why not also support iPads? When searching that on the internet, I found that the connection is done through Wifi and Bluetooth, and ALL iPad models have them, even without cellular connectivity. Second: why is Apple Pay not yet supported in Latin America, apart from Brazil? And finally: why does TouchID on my iPad not working with my fingerprint, when that fingerprint worked perfectly on my iPhone and still works on my Android device?
even the indian guys at the repair shops are being jobless now because of apple and samsung. For example replacing broken screen and display is becoming near impossible. For the price they quote, you can get a fully working used phone.
It's very simple: sell your apple garbage and buy a proper Samsung one, then install Lineage OS or cyanogenmod on it and you're golden. Google's android sucks.
As far as Apple not allowing people access into the phones so they can work on them, Apple may have taken some cues from premium car companies like Mercedes, BMW, and SAAB to name a few. These premium car companies make it difficult to work on their products because the cars are branded as premium. Therefore, people who have premium cars supposedly have enough money to allow someone else to work on them saving the consumer time and frustration of working on it themselves. In the end, the car owner always has a working vehicle which helps give the product and usability of it a premium experience. This could be the same approach Apple has taken.
Wait a minute, you really didn’t answer the conspiracy about Apple 🍎 sealing their products so that users can’t repair their own device. You only mentioned about the battery. Could you go more in-depth about the customer self repair issue? They have Apple repair guy here on UA-cam named Lois Rossmann who talks about many issues with Apple products. He even went to testified in Washington on the “Right to Repair” movement. Can you please make a video on this and how this applies to Apple products? I’m sure others that watch your channel would like to know more about this whole “Right to Repair” issue. I love your channel and I can’t wait to hear what you know about this issue. THANK YOU 😊
the webcam and listening in isn't specific to just Apple products, just so people are aware. any bad hacker can do these things on literally any device if they're skilled enough.
My take on the planned obsolescence one is that they actively chose not to optimize iOS 10 and 11 to make people get a new device, but they didn’t actively slow phones down for that reason.
Personally, I think it's the RAM. I'll comment my comment here. About the planned obsolescence... I don't think it's actually programmed into the software. Rather, they're doing it in a smarter way. One thing that I can share is that when I use my IPAD during my visit to HK, I was reading tech reviews online about Phones and Laptops. Then the next day, my browser had ads from gadget stores in HK popped up all over the place. It went on for weeks. I thought Safari browser does not share my data. Am I missing something?
Companies shouldn’t force customers to buy new devices because they getting slowed by them, they should make us to buy new stuff by making it significantly better.
Those spooky microphone advertisements have been proven to be coincidence, though. Think about it, before you had that conversation with your friend about buying a dog you might have looked up dog breeds, or made a post on Facebook, or just watched more videos about dogs on UA-cam. Yes, advertisers are *absolutely* using your web data for targeted ads (and potentially other purposes), but your microphone? Much less likely than you think.
Nah , me and my friend were talking and she mentioned she wanted to hike mt Kilimanjaro, prior to this conversation I didn't search anything to do with hiking as Im not interested in that stuff , 48 hours later I see an ad about mountain climbing in Kilimanjaro... This is not a coincidence
I never bought into the Apple intentionally hurting our battery garbage. Yes, items like batteries degrade over time. We all know this. Apple, could have been more open about slowing us down over time. But, would we have noticed truly if they didn't reveal this bit of knowledge to us? I didn't notice when I replaced the battery in my old iPhone that it got faster or lasted longer. I simply noticed I had less money in my wallet. (:
@ Apple : its very clear you guys are against independent repair shops doing repairs. And it is not about the screws , its about the tools you offer to third party repair shops , or your resistance to the right to repair movement, amongst other things . the screws are the least of those issues. I am a fan of apple products , not at their practices in this area.
The propriety screws aren't any stronger becuase only the head of the screw is different. The head doesn't make the screw any tougher. The propriety head only makes repairs tougher.

@@PastelMarshmallows So its unplanned obsolescence 😂

(Obviously I declined the repair; thankfully I soon inherited a 7+ from my brother.)
I understand that a company like Apple, whose hardware is designed to work in a particular way, might get antsy allowing others access, but designing proprietary screws that are laced with chalk so they can tell when their devices are opened?
I agree. I'm watching this video with cheap wireless headphones
It's because of the Taptic engine. That's the reason why the home button on the iPhone 7 and 8 is capacitive.
@jfktruthseeker420 actually for adapter. Charging cable is still there in the box. And there are many better options for adapters from the likes of anker and more.
I always thought it was removed to improve water resistance.

Vinnie Madrox yep!
And for companies to have to buy their permit to use the lightning port
Also have to take into account the sales of wireless headphones Had/have overtaken wired headphones.
I feel like it went down like this they were gonna take of the headphone jack for the x and maybe the 8 but then since they were releasing air pods they just went like oh might as well do'em at the sane time

Love the channel. Always looking forward to your new videos. Cheers.

Considering Apple has the longest phone support of any brand by FAR this has not aged well.

Oh, So louis tomlinson was right about iPhOne CoNsPirAcY.
0:50 samsung does this even more. they only let new android updates support two phones into the past, while apple still supports the 6s on ios 13
That has nothing to do with planned obsolescence. A product doesn’t become useless just because you don’t get new updates.

I will say that I have been recommended a bunch of Apple videos since talking to my wife about some "iSheep" videos I saw.
