  • The late 60's and early '70's were a time of tremendous upheaval in American culture as the hippie generation abandoned the values of their parents, turned to drugs and away from materialism, and went on a search for love and peace.
It was out of this tumultuous era that young, musical voices began to surface. These newly converted musicians began singing about the new hope they had found through Jesus Christ.
Darrell Mansfield was one of these young voices. Go behind the scenes with him to look at this exciting era in this clip from, "First Love".

Darrell is now suffering from Dementia. Please pray for him.
My own history with Darrell, I first saw him when he played at My High School in 1981. I was already playing a little harmonica, but it was "ditties" like O Susanna type stuff. He blew my mind
Got more into the harp and Darrell taught me about playing cross harp. Learned how to play blues/rock harp. Got my first Astatic Mic from Darrell (stolen from me in 95) and in 1988 I got a 1958 Fender Tweed Champ Amplifier from Darrell that I still have to this day (The amp is now 65 yrs old! )
I have played a lot in church, on a handful of recordings (including one Latin Grammy winning album by Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam band) and in various bands. It really all started with Darrell. I would not be who I am without his influence, and I treasure the bro a lot!
It's been about 10 yrs since I last saw him play.
    Love you Darrell

I saw him at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa 1981. I heard his testimony and responded.
My response was not based in repentance and I quickly fell away. It took another 13 years before I met Jesus and turned my life over to him.

4:20-4:30 That is the closest you will ever hear a harmonica sound like a shredding electric guitar! The man is unparalleled on the harmonica - all glory to God!

I know these CCM guys made their choice to be in this genre. But as a student of music, it hurts my heart that such brilliant talent goes mostly unnoticed in the world of rock and pop.

Always such a likable and genuine person -- and a whale (or should I say "wail"?!) of a harmonica player. Darrell, you've always been one of my favorites.

I have had the pleasure to talk to Darrell several times at the concerts he used to do at churches in the late 70's, and 80's. He is very personable and talked to me and my friends like he knew us for a long time. sharing about what was going on in his life. He is a great person and has been a good role model to look up to for me. His music is truly anointed by God !! Thank you Darrell !!!!

I was at A family guy reunion with about 40 cousins this past week and they were all drinking heavily,me and another cousin were the only adults not drinking so I slipped in some Darrel Mansfield tunes without them knowing and they absolutely liked them and were bobbing their heads and stuff to his music!!!
I pray that not just music hit them but that the Holy Ghost will touch their hearts and they turn from their sins!

The guitarist who could no longer play a guitar (because he slit his wrists). Love all the different "guitar solo" licks from 4:08 - 4:44, especially: "bending the string" from 4:12 - 4:14; "shredding" from 4:20 - 4:26. Oh yeah, I want to jam with Mansfield when I get to heaven - the man can rock!

OK - let me ask this simple question, and please answer first with "no" or "yes" before any argumentation: do you believe Mr. Mansfeld is not saved because he sings Born to be Wild? Yes or No?

  • @raponte1955
    @raponte1955 13 років тому

@MarkOpee1 Singing and "ungodly" song like "Born to be wild" means nothing. The song is just an icon of rock culture. I would rather stay on the safe side and not judge Darrell, since I can't see what's in his heart. If somebody claims to be christian, I'd rather believe it unless there's obvious evidence of inmorality or any form of sin. But honestly, singing "Born to be wild" and wearing a "big silver cross" is irrelevant and does not reflect any fruits.
