This video gets even deeper when you realize that every pair (parent and children) wears the flag’s colors of the countries bordering Rwanda, where his father was killed during the genocide. Stromae and the boy themselves are wearing Rwanda’s flag colors.

When Stromae was little, his father got killed and his mother couldn't handle telling him that, so she told him his father was just 'away'. Only years later he found out about the truth. So the song is not completely biographic but he took elements of his real life for writing this song.
Stromae's "Tous les memes" is also amazing, but "Quand c'est" will grab you by the throat and will give you chills.

The title Papaoutai uses a form of abstract pun called a trumpet. This invented word plays between the two senses: "Papa, where are you?" And “empapaouter” meaning “to fool someone” in slang, thus recalling the fickle attitude of the father and the sufferings of the son.

    Stromae

I think the father is something the kids imagine and idealize because it is not there. I think it is more than the kid imagines it being with him, but that is even worse than feeling there is nothing because you carry it all the time and clouds the reality of what a father is.

    Papaoutai
    Stromae
tell me where he is from
Finally, I will know where I am going
    Mom says when looking good
    We always end up finding
She says he's never very far
That he goes to work very often
    Mom says "working is good"
Much better than being in bad company!
    Not true?
    Where is your dad?
Tell me where your Dad is?
    Without even talking to him
    He knows what is wrong
    One hell of a dad
tell me where are you hiding?
It must be at least a thousand times
    That I counted my fingers
    Hey
Where are you? Dad where are you?
Where are you? Dad where are you?
Where are you? Dad where are you?
Where are you? Where are you? Where dad where are you?
Where are you? Dad where are you?
Where are you? Dad where are you?
Where are you? Dad where are you?
Where are you? Where are you? Where dad where are you?
    Where are you?
What, we believe it or not
There will be a day when we won't believe it anymore
One day we'll all be daddy
And one day to another, we'll be gone
    Will we be hated?
    Will we be admirable?
    Broodstock or geniuses
Tell us who gives birth to the irresponsible?
    Ah, tell us who, like
Everyone knows how to make babies
But nobody knows how we make dads
Sir, I know everything would have inherited it, right?
You have to suck it with your thumb or what?
    Tell us where it's hidden?
It must be at least a thousand times
    That we ate our fingers
    Hey
Where are you? Dad where are you?

The crawling backwards dance was not invented by Stromae. It comes from a famous scene in Friedkin's the Exorcist !! And yes, Stromae lost his dad in the Rwanda genocide.

His father is from Rwanda, and I am not sure if he dissapeared (which we all know what that means) or did he died in war. His mother is Belgian and he took her last name

Stromae didn't get to grow up with his father around because he died during the conflict in Rwanda I believe, hence why the boy is with a mannequin because his actual father is dead. I couldn't help but think of Michael Jackson when looking at the father and son in the yellow suits, where the father seemed to be punishing his son for not doing something right, and that's why at the end the boy seems to appreciate that without a father he also doesn't have that authoritarian figure telling him how to be, like the kids shown with their parents, where they are doing the same as the parent. In the beginning the boy was envious of them but he seems to have a better outlook towards the end which is so deep

Stromae was born in Belgium from a Rwandese father and Belgian mother. His father left his family to go back to Rwanda to live there, where he was later killed during the Rwandese genocide in 1994.
