I've never seen anyone react to Stromae before. He is so talented. For some background, his father died in the Rwandan genocide and he was raised by his Belgian mother. His lyrics are so deep. I think you would like Formidable and Ave Cesaria.

@@Thelittleone18 His father wasn't exactly absent, he had to move back to Rwanda when Stromae was 3, sure but he kept contact and visited every year. The part of the song where the kid asks his mom, and she gives some random excuses is most likely referencing how when his dad died, his mom couldn't bring herself to tell them for 3 years and instead made up some other excuses, why he suddenly didn't contact them any more.

@@sonzai9441 I read that he barely saw his father, about 20 times in his whole life as he was travelling between Rwanda and Belgium a lot for work and had a second family there. The lyrics criticize the fact that he did not take responsibility and didn't know how to be a good dad. He also implies that his father chose work over him.

In these excerpts, he explains how he wasn't really affected by the genocide as he didn't experience it directly. He says he is really close with his aunt and suffered from seeing her suffer but he doesn't want to appropriate this horrible event as his story. He says it wouldn't be right.
At the beginning, he also states clearly that he was more scared by his father's absence than his death.

"Papa où t'es" colloquial form of "Papa où es-tu?"
And if we're dancing to it, maybe it's because it evokes deep feelings for all those who miss a father-child connection. Many miss a father, even if they're not all dead in the Rwandan genocide.
Stromae never speaks of his father, doesn't use his pain to attract attention or respect.

    3:11 Papaoutai -> Papa, où t'es ? -> Papa, où es tu ?
The first one (Papaoutai) used Stromae is him playing with the words and the sound which form this truly used version "Papa, où t'es ?", which is actually kind of a slang for the more formal version (Papa, où es tu ?). All of them means: "Dad, where are you ?".

As native french speaker, let me explain the confusion about Papaoutai. First of all, Papaoutai = "Papa où t'es" and this is a common shortcut that we, french peoples uses to make pronunciation less complicated plus it also sound way more smooth than saying "Papa où es-tu". The difference between them is:
"Papa où es-tu" is said like you'd say "Can you help me?"
    and
"Papa où t'es" is said like you'd say "Help me"
    ESH !

... Yes, in french "Daddy where are you?", can be said "Daddy wher'r' you?", something like this. But also, Stromae knows the "popular culture" (example the song "Moules frites": here, in the North of France, to the Belgian border, we can immediately hears the "music" of the popular "chips trucks"). So, in "where are you daddy?" we can also hear the verb "empapaouter" ("to get pissed off") ... A bit like the kid who, at school, always finds himself faced with the eternal question from teachers: "So where's your daddy?" , or same for all adults around him in general: the wound of absence then constantly awakened, where the shame, or even the bitterness sent back to the father by the kid. In some children, it gives a lot of slippage ...
Simple interpretation. But that seems very plausible to me. Children suffer in particular from the "projections" that the hardest adults stick to their heads: roughly: "from the innocence of children to the world of the certainties of adults" ...
    - "You will be a man, my son": ok ... Ok ... But sometimes you have to see at what cost ...
(well... It's still a bit simplified... It is also the adults who structure the child, the "polymorphic pervert". Or at least, who are supposed to be doing it. From the point of view ... How to say ... "Civilizational") ... (?) . . . [thanks google translation]
    - - -
Heartbreaking song, in some ways . .

... And... Same, in the song "Santé" : stromae plays with words. The idea is fun and well thought out, to add to the first name "Céline" a suffix "bataire", which gives "Céline-bataire", that is to say ' "Single" ' (The Céline in question has a sad life, not only because of her work, but because she lacks love). In short, we are thrown into the situation with only two words.. It is special attention given to the word.
As a result, from the known beginnings of Stromae, some people have compared his work to Jacques Brel, I believe. (also for his way of "living" his songs)

    • @fredcomal4658
      @fredcomal4658 3 місяці тому

      ... Why here again... 2024?
Either. We can also add that in "Papaoutai", we also hear "Papuan": the "Papuans", an African "ethnicity": not necessarily a direct reclaiming of its roots, but in any case an evocation of it. We can only note, in this sense, the fact that all the actors in the clip seem "of African origin", to put it succinctly and without judgment (in any case, it seems that there is only one alone, or even two, "cradles of humanity": knowledge that is beyond me). However, this "aesthetic choice" is not necessarily Stromae's idea, if he works with screenwriters or others for his clips: I believe he was surrounded by a powerful team at the time.
So it would be like a phonetic game. Perhaps the evocation of that to which, constantly, we refer the little child to whom we ask "where is your father", otherwise, "what do your parents do in life"; and, when the answer arrives, the judgments by way of "conclusion" of those who listen to it... We can sometimes hear, coming from "Caucasians" (these are not my words: it seems that it is like that we say today : it's difficult to think seriously when you have to deal with "concepts" imagined by others - the pitfalls of language?), the expression "All that is some Papuan affairs" ("Tout ça c'est des histoires de papous", expression that can be heard sometimes, although rarely) : who generalizes in a rather reductive way all of Africa in the image of a single "ethnic group"... The same thing, for example, considering another side of our brave little planet, with the expression "All that is some Chinese" ("Tout ça c'est du chinois", popular expression), when the person may instead be talking about a phenomenon Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian, etc. It's generalizing, reducing, creating indistinction... At the same time hiding one's ignorance, or, possessing the information but not considering it worthy of sharing or communication.
Obviously this is all subjective. But Stromae seems to like playing with words. And then, well... Maybe we're not that stupid.

"Où t'es?" is a contraction of "où tu es?". In spoken French, we rarely use the correct form of asking questions like "Où es-tu?", instead we use the declarative phrasing and just mark the tone to signal that it is indeed a question.

3:00 - ohh what a flashback to having the same struggle as you guys when at the start of my french journey and trying to encrypt the lyrics ahahha
So basically in spoken french, or rather slang (called verlan) words are cut in half and the parts interchanged-this is where the verlan gets its name from: l'envers-verlan (the trick is to not look at the letters but to rather listen to the pronounciation). This has been implemented on a whole sentence here and therefore "papa t'es où" is "papa où t'es".
Then the "tu es" is actually shortened to "t'es" in colloquial french and the word order tends to be quite forgiving too, so hearing "tu viens d'où" instead of the more grammatically correct "d'où viens-tu?" is very possible and frequent.

Stromae produces and write his work he got super known in France because he used to post like small episodes that he called « lessons » that were both funny and cool where he was producing his beats trying to find the right one and righting the lyrics. I think this is still on UA-cam but that was really interesting. Fun fact he was originally a rapper and tried to go for it before he changed a bit his style.
He’s known to have super upbeat songs with incredible bittersweet and sad lyrics.
He stopped for a while making music because he was overworked and overwhelmed with everything that came all at one plus he caught a super dangerous disease while he was touring back when he was at his peak. He had to cure which lasted super long and he said he was super traumatized. After it he created a brand with his wife but for a while he said he didn’t really make music like that anymore. But this year he surmised everybody and released something.

Some short explications about the title and exemples to help you :
Papaoutai is indeed the words "papa où t'es" all attached together but with a different spelling on the "es" that simply comes to change the pronunciation [é] into [è].
And like in English, in French, we've language shortcuts :
"Papa où t'es ?" would be like "Papa where're you ?"
"Papa où es-tu ?" would be like "Papa where are you ?"

But i don't know if they are subtitles... It would be nice, his lyrics are always awesome and sooo well wrighting (he wrote a book "Petit Pays" who won a littetature price, he's really a good writer)
