Thanks for your advice. I got to do some winter camping here in N.C. mountains Also you forgot to mention to keep flammable items from your heater LOVE ALL BROTHER.
So you have a goal zero. Instead of diesel since you don’t camp for long periods why not just get a small electric heater that plugs into the goal zero. That way no chance of carbon and you only use it for a certain time anyway
Hi Mav, Y.T. suggested your channel, I really like your content. I spent my 20's camping out of my truck like you are doing. I live in S. WI. so I spent a lot of time in N. MN. You have a nice setup there! After years of R.Vs I'm now camping out of my SUV and may well go back to a truck. I'm looking forward to checking out more of your channel.
I agree that reflectors are very important to staying warm against naturally cold areas, Mylar blankets taped up around a regular tent with a heater will create a lot!!! of added comfort and only cost very little.
I like that big hole because it makes more fresh air available to you. An auxiliary battery on a separator switch same as in marine use is the only way to not jeopardize your engine battery. Set on both, the alternator will keep everything charged, set it to aux. for overnight needs. The alt. will bring it all back up when you drive. A real light, loose onsie is all I wear in a bag or nothing. You're right about that. I always use two detectors for monoxide just in case. Good video. Peace.
If you can keep an air gap from the window to the reflectix will greatly increase R value. I put my velcro on the aluminum frame around the window. This gives you at least a 1/4" air gap
I watched your channel all the time when I was overseas. Ive been home now for awhile and will be getting my camper top next week! Can't wait for some camping adventures 😎
I was about to give you so much crap about running that buddy heater in an enclosed area and my guy busted out a freaking carbon monoxide detector! Awesome setup I want something similar
I'm packing for a winter campout in my truckbed tonight and boom - your video pops up right away! Going to be quite cold like 10 degrees but I feel prepared now! :)
Little Buddy also makes Indoor certified heaters. I would definitely use one of those instead of the one you have there, even if you have that CO detector.
Hey you want to keep warm in your truck without worrying about CO2; then you can also sleep on the *REFLECTORS* &will keep you warm. Second suggestion is best hand warmer up to 8 hours. Third wool blend fleece blanket, this blanket is sold by korea. can buy it at Amazon. Electric blanket to your invertor/generator. Last resort is BUDDY heater.
The best Heater is DIY Radiant Floor Water Filled with a Heat Exchanger attached to your radiator. Heats up the camper while you driving to your camp spot.
Hey Maverick. I have a potential life saver for you. My job requires me to be confined space and hazmat licensed. The greatest byproduct your Ford produces is CO2 not carbon monoxide. Your propane heater has an oxygen sensor because of oxygen displacement caused by CO2 which is a byproduct of propane as well. Invest in an O2 meter. I've watched guys pass out from low PPM O2 fairly quick down in the manholes when they got propane heat and low air circulation.
Hey mav if you where to have like a trailer with you and convert it into like a bathroom kitchen and tv place then when u ready to go to bed just get into the back of your truck
my wife knitted me a pair of oversized socks x2. my last layer to put on my feet. 100% wool. being oversized I wear other socks and a size over in boots. feet have never got cold even after hours on a deer stand. wool socks and larger boots work.
The only issue I ever had with that insulation is in the extreme cold and the condensation created frost that made them stick to the windows, but truly it is good insulation and easy to work with, great tips thank you, cops ever bother you when you car camp?
Realizing it has been 3 years since you published this video, I would recommend a metal cookie sheet under the Mr Buddy heater as a potential flame block!
Line the inside of your drawers with that bubble wrap installation I have it in my shipping container and it is awesome. It keeps out 98% of heat and cold. Hope that helps.
Good to carry a 1500 watt goal zero batter for cooking. I carry a small cooler for keeping bacon meat etc. Keep a combo butane propane one burner stove. Carry a 700 watt pot to boil water off my goal zero.
Ive seen someone take the spare tire off and mount one of them silent honda generators in a box protecting it from the elements and it was a slick.way to have power
bought an electric heater last week, thing is nice. it's dry heat and you can leave it on all night. though i was at a state park with electric, so there's that. i do have the little buddy also, but electric is much nicer if you can support it.
Just an idea, remove the access panel on your tailgate and fill with spray foam. Cheap and easy insulation as well as light weight. Just another thing to get you that much closer to warmer winter night.
Hey Mav! Take a look at the chinese diesel heaters! Just picked one up a few weeks ago that will be going into my Rooftop tent when it arrives. Been using it now for a couple weeks down to 22 degrees and on the lowest setting keeping my tent at 65 with windows cracked lol. If I put it on high I could probably make a sauna out of my tent ;) Thought you might check it out to keep warm. Dry, safe heat, no carbon monoxide, no flame inside the vehicle to worry about. better yet NO CONDENSATION! woot!! lol. Take care, love your videos!
4:50 it's a thermal barrier, also known as a radiant barrier. the tech comes from NASA (space blanket). people use them to insulate their attics and garage doors. those things are designed to reflect 95% thermal energy (heat). they can trap heat (reduce heat loss) in a contain space and reflect heat from a contained space.
Hi Mav . I was thinking about your heating problem and was wondering why you dont just put in underfloor electric heat .under your green grass cover it heats up quickly and is low risk as it runs on low voltage and you can put a timer on it so you can pop on in advance of waking up by a few minutes which means when you wake up it doesnt feel like a fridge lol. Iam sure that would work . Let me know good or bad idea.
Good stuff man! I've really been thinking about diesel heat also. I think putting the unit in the hollow between the interior and exterior bedsides of the truck would be sweet and discreet but alot of work
@@mav Why would it be a better R value if you have to blow it up with air ? Wouldn't cold air underneath it keep it colder ? Unless you have it inside the sleeping bag then so that way your body heat would heat the air and keep you warmer or do you think it makes much difference? Thanks for your response and keep doing what you are doing.
@@tombulger generally speaking the self-inflating ones have some sort of gell or rubber inside, it's a mix between a foam pad and an air pad. The gel plus air provides a good amount of insulation. I'm not talking about one that is just air.
@@mav Thanks for explaining that to me. I was not aware of the type that had gel in them. See who said you can't teach an old dog something new...just turned 60 this year...lol My days of camping was to put a wool blanket on the ground and hope you didn't get cold inside your light weigh sleeping bags...buy have times changed for the better :-)
Air is actually the best to insulate yourself cold. That's how layers work. Loose layers keep you warmer, not because of the layer itself but the air in the soace between is what keeps the cold off you.
I'm not very educated in batteries and such but I did hear of something called the jackery which is I believe a solar-powered type device that you can plug things in and like the 12 volt cigarette lighter type thing and they do make electric blankets with the cigarette 12 volt plugs I was wondering maybe if you could try that maybe in one of your videos at least you could keep warm from the blanket being that it could be heated just an idea
Hey Mav, not sure if you jump back into the comments from old videos, but how do you manage proper ventilation when running a heater in a truck cab? I've been a handful of times and I air on the side of caution and crack windows (2-4 inches) on both sides of the cab to vent out all the carbon dioxide but I sacrifice losing a lot of heat. Any tips or suggestions here?
Mav, I came across your channel because I enjoy camping. All kinds of camping. Camped all over the US and Canada as a kid with my family. Then stole parent's 5th wheel (fair & square) to live in during college. Lived in that thing for 5 years of college, plus three more years after college. Now I have a Lance cabover camper on a 4 door 1997 F350 truck. Recently bought a 5.0 F150 and I am looking to set it up for short weekend trips. I really enjoy your content and look forward to more. I agree 100% on the wool BTW. It also as the advantage of not making you colder if it gets wet, or you sweat in it. Cotton does make you colder! I am curious: Did you choose a topper, or that particular topper, over something larger or higher for a reason? I am trying to make a decision on my F150. Taller than the cab by a few inches seems like an intelligent choice for sleeping in it. F150 doesn't seem like enough truck for a cabover; even a small one. But since that's what I'm used to, the drawers and a topper seems like it might be uncomfortably small. Basically what I am asking is, if you were to start over with the same truck right now, would you do it any differently, or stay with the same setup? Whether you answer or not, thank you for sharing your time and talents with all of us. These videos are uplifting; especially when it seems like the whole world is falling apart. Cheers!

Thermo electric fan sitting on a metal paint can grid on the heater. You can also keep a pan of warm water going almost all night as well!

Another great vid Mav, if you come back to Boise we can take you fishing and help with a battery/solar boost over what you have now

come to Eau Claire sometime. lots of good truck camping spots
The gaps are probably a good thing to eliminate moisture

Be hard to put it away if he did that
Carbon monoxide detectors should you get two to be extra safe
