Saunder's assessment of Metcalf's condition of the opposite of Kirby's testimony of the incident reflects the other side of bravery that you forgot the human side of being a soldier... very well written story...
I've been appreciating Combat more than I ever did when I first saw the series way back in the 70s in the time of my youth...

The MP in the Courtroom turned out to be a regular in season 2 as "Doc" the medic. He is not listed in the credits at the end, but his name is Colan Carter.

I'm almost 75 years old. Combat was a top notch series when I was a teenager in high school. Some excellent writing and even better acting. Aired on Tuesday evenings and I remember it well and enjoyed it very much. So much so I have all five seasons on DVD. I always thought Caje was the best soldier in the squad. Guess that's why the Sarge always made him take point. Kirby was an excellent BAR man but a rascally hothead. Little John was a stumblebum but pretty reliable. Doc was always there with a band-aid when you needed him but Saunders was definitely the true leader of the pack when it came to soldiering and looking out for his charges. As a veteran myself I saw literally dozens of people during my working career who wouldn't get to first base in the military and definitely could never carry a set of stripes yet they were givin positions of authority. Sometimes I still find myself shaking my head.

Morrow's nothing less than marvelous performance as a surveillance specialist in the pilot "Slow Boy" of NBC's Police Story in September 1973, one of the more realistic police series ever to be seen on television, foretold winning portrayals by the appearances of numerous actors who helped the cop show win accolades for such an outstanding drama series. Police Story was the precursor to later TV shows such as Hill Street Blues, Law & Order, NYPD Blue and The Shield. Vic's down-to-earth performance in the pilot paved the way.

fake piano teeth. Blood, sweat and tears from scared courageous young men who lived
through hell over and over and over. Thank you youtube for this.

Such high caliber writing and acting are rarely seen on TV today. My dad was a combat veteran in WWll god rest his soul. I feel guilty for not suffering the way that generation did, but reaping the benefits of it. I worship them for their sacrifices. They should be respectfully remembered.

Vic Morrow a great actor and one of many Stars on the Combat series.dw 82 Airborne Military Police Company
    82nd Airborne Division
    1972-1973.
My First Sgt. was Mr. Airborne. He named his Daughter Canopy, his Son Ripcord. His German shepherd dog nick named "Little Airborne" by the soldiers in the Company jumped with the First Sgt and earned his Dog Paratrooper jump wings.
My 1st Sgt. was William Gilbert Verbist. He made two combat jumps in the Korean War. He served four tours in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
1st Sgt Verbist made 556 parachute jumps. He retired after 30 years of service as Sgt. Major of the 82nd Airborne Provost Marshall office.
    He was Mr.Airborne
    All The Way.
He was inducted into Military Police Hall of fame at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri.
1ST Sgt told me to stop everyone who came into the 82nd Airborne Division area and find out who they were and why the were there. I replied Yes 1st Sgt. Then he told me if I saw the United States Army Rangers come on Ft. Bragg to wave them on through. I asked 1st Sgt. why is that? He said the United States Rangers are the Best of the Best and if they need policing they will police themselves.
Two weeks later I was directing traffic at Guber and Grave street and I look up and see a convoy of Rangers coming towards me.
As the Ranger Captain wearing a black beret came through the intersection riding a mule I snapped to attention saluted and shouted "ALL THE WAY SIR".The Captain Saluted me back and Shouted "Airborne."
The rest of the Ranger detachment came through riding on a Gamma 🐐 goat.
In April 1972 the 82nd Airborne Division was on Red Alert to deploy to Vietnam in response to the Eastertide offensive where the North Vietnam Army was coming to South
    Vietnam with Hundreds of tanks.
That night of the Red Alert I spent all night at Grave and Ardennes street stopping every car and telling the soldiers "The Division is on Red Alert, report to your unit ASAP and keep it quite."
When the Sun came up we MP's starting escorting the tank knock out teams from the 2nd Brigade to Pope Air force base to be loaded on C141s. MPs were under orders to make sure no one approached any of the Soldiers and to apprehend anyone who did because this mission Was Top Secret.
There was a weapon mounted on all the Jeeps that I had never seen before so I asked soldier what it was and he said a tow missile.
I asked the solder what do you do with that?
    He responded "kill tanks".
Yeas later I talked to a Sgt. Who was in charge of leading the 32 tank knockout teams and he said they spent six months in Vietnam on this mission.
My platoon met with our platoon Sgt. the next day and he told us that " if we deployed to Vietnam our Commander in chief President Nixon would make sure we had the equipment to complete our mission and come home safely to our families.
Four days later the Division was taking off red alert. The tank knock teams deployed to Vietnam but the rest of the Division stood down and taken off red alert.
This event is not mentioned in the History of The 82nd Airborne Division because it was "classified top secret".
I personally never went to Vietnam.
I salute all the military personnel who did go to Vietnam. In my opinion those who went to Vietnam are
    the best of the best.

Sometimes Kirby is a pain in the posterior, a wise guy. But when the chips are down, he will back you up. If Kirby dives for a fox hole you better believe there is a good reason.
Robert Culp is such a great actor, I have appreciated him in every thing he ever did. He was so cool as Hoby Gilman in a TV western called Trackdown.

Greatest TV series of my childhood. Including all westerns Gunsmoke and Bonanza ...Combat was beloved by all of us kids born in the 50s. I think Vic Morrow was the most authentic dramatic actor of that era. Too bad they didnt do a feature film based on the series. Vic would of garnished an Oscar for sure. Combat was so popular on TV during my grade school ( early 1960s ). Every Saturday at 7:00 PM I was at home just to watch Lt. Hanley, Sgt. Saunders, Privates Caje, Kirby, Little John and Doc. And their weapons Carbine, Thompson, Garand, Browning were pretty good. I was so sad that Vic Morrow and Rick Jason died in tragedies.

Caje didn't have to help Sarge in this matter. Sarge told him I can't order you to do anything the Army didn't authorize. But he did it anyway because of who Sarge was as a person not his rank. That is real power! People do for you because of who you are as a person not because of your position! But isn't it better to get people to come along side to help you because they want too. The best influence in the world!

He played in two other Outer Limits episodes as well, both in season 1: "The Architects of Fear", where he was surgically altered into an alien "boogeyman" to try uniting the warring nations of Earth against a common enemy; and "Corpus Earthling", in which he accidentally overhears an alien plot to invade & conquer the earth. BTW, "Demon With a Glass Hand" was a one-parter, not two - "The Inheritors" was the show's only 2-part episode. It starred Robert Duvall & Steve Ihnat.

Or he needs a serious rest from combat. It's said that 240 days on the battlefield a soldier can snap. When I was in infantry school in Camp Pendleton back in 1982, some of my instructors were Vietnam veterans. One in particular staff sergeant drank heavily off hours. I knew that to be the case because my father drank heavily drowning his sorrows from combat fatigue in World War II as a tanker. A fighting can be on the lines so long he loses fear,

I never saw the first couple seasons since I was only 4 or 5 when the first season launched. Great watching these, since I never saw them before. This had to be the first episode Kirby has the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle), as in an earlier episode the BAR man gets killed and Kirby had lobbied for it, but a replacement got it instead. I know all the later seasons that I had watched as a kid, Kirby always had the BAR and became a reliable gutsy soldier, not the goofball of the first half season.
This episode and almost getting court-martialed must have transformed him. We shall see in the next half season of episode.

    • @blusnuby2
      @blusnuby2 4 роки тому +2

COMBAT was a superlative tv show with accolades all around, but I always felt the squad`s 16 pound BAR should have been handled by Little John, not Kirby. In my humble opinion, larger heavier weaponry should be operated by bigger men. Same holds true with the 23 pound M60, later in Vietnam.
Happy to report my Family enjoyed this tv series from the start, back in the day. My Father, a WW2 U.S. Army combat veteran of the ETO, said the show was so well produced & acted that at times he felt "extremely unsettled" watching it...Most of the series was filmed in Culver City, California, just 4 miles from our home.

I like how Saunders empathizes with Robert Culp's character. He has been where Cup's character has been....ironic how he comments about the other Sgt being so conditioned to being brave that he doesn't see danger when it is in front of him. IN some ways....isn't that Saunders too?

    • @dindinprivate3477
      @dindinprivate3477 7 років тому +2

I saw at 10:30 that a shell exploded by Sgt Metcalf did not take cover as he approached Kirby. I thought what the hell (and if Combat lost its excellent attention to detail) until the last part when Saunders said how Metcalf was conditioned to danger. Conditioned or simply couldn't cared less if he lived or died? Now's that's a terrible leader of men or sgt.

One overlooked point is the prosecutor. When the evidence becomes overwhelming, he swallows his pride and does the right thing - making his own motion to dismiss the charges. This is something that prosecutors are taught to do, but don't always follow through on. Their job/mission is to see justice served, not convict people. Unfortunately in this modern age a lot of civilian prosecutors are grandstanding for the cameras and think the only thing that matters is their conviction rate.
