    I think the way and time that the weaning with these foals was perfect, I always wean my foals ar 4-5 months, and they are much better to work with and the moms need to have their time back.

    Ok everyone saying she needs to consider a different method doesn’t know her or what she’s tried. I know plenty of horses who’ve been weaned cold turkey (I own a mare who I guarantee was weaned that way) and she’s just fine. I will agree some foals are better off than others and will react better than others. There are so many factors that should be considered, colts can breed back to their dams, mares can loose weight, mare may not be producing enough milk, the foal may be stealing all the dams hay, etc.
    I have a foal that my vet said to wean at 3 months if my mare wasn’t gain and retaining weight because of her health. Vets won’t geld colts until a minimum of 6 months old but if you have a 3-4 month old Colt mounting his mare constantly there could be the possibility of him breeding his mare (which is a disaster waiting to happen genetically). Criticizing someone based off of another UA-camr (who as far as I know has never bred a mare or bought a mare and foal combo) isn’t fair. You don’t know what conversations she’s had with her vet about weaning so you can’t judge. When I asked my vet about weaning my Colt he never suggested a method just a time period.
    My suggestion is to stick to your own business, educate yourself, and talk with your vet if your trying to wean a foal. Judging someone based of a 1-30 minute video isn’t fair. Do your own research and let others be. Harassing and repeating information (without doing your own thorough research and being able to provide said person with the research) will not make someone change if they don’t want to.

    As much as I adore your love for your foals, this is not a proper way of weaning. There is no “one good way” of weaning of course, but putting them away like that and in a confined space causes a lot of stress to them, and that stress lasts. Unfortunately, horses are easy to be traumatised and we want to limit this as much as possible ❤ the foals show visible distress. Before you ask me how long I have been breeding, I work at breeding facility for years now, the breeding facility is breeding for about 4-5 generations by now and has around 20 foals per year, I also consult and work with foals at different facilities where there are 1-5 foals a year, sometimes more. I’ve seen A LOT and I worked with hundreds of foals at this point. The difference is huge. Many people don’t understand just how huge and how many behaviours later in their life are caused by it. Please at least do your own research and consider other methods.
    All the best to you and your horses ❤

    I gotta say girl, I've followed you on here for a LONG time, but I am speechless over this. I had no idea people still did cold turkey weaning. You have all those beautiful pastures and you can't do it properly? In addition, you are taking multiple foals who have never met, are going through something extremely traumatic (thanks to you), and you expect the sh*t to not hit the fan in that stall? You were so shocked by the baby being "dramatic" for kicking at you. I'd kick you because you just took my Mom away when I was still nursing and locked me in a tiny room with 2 other horses for days too.
    You think Penelope might be the chillest (despite showing the whites of her eyes) because she got to spend 2 more months with her mother than the other 2 had? Maybe she was a bit more ready for this? Just a thought.

      Just FYI, Raleigh quoted a study that was only done on pigs. Not equine. So a ton of her “scientific proof” is flawed. Have you done your own research, (like legit peer reviewed studies) or are you just regurgitating what somebody else said? Because it definitely sounds like the latter. These foals are perfectly fine.

    This is very much not how my barn does it, and their foals and moms are much more chill and seem pretty well-adjusted. I'm a bit concerned about the confined space, with all of them freaking out and running on top of each other? Would it be possible to have a different non-mom adult nearby, a horse they're familiar with, there to help them feel less alone and afraid? Kind of like an aunt or uncle to just be nearby and when they see that that horse is calm, maybe they'll be more calm? I'm just a hobby rider but I feel like that might make things easier for them, emotionally. And less dangerous if they're not flailing and running and thrashing inside a stall. :S

    • @tabortoothtiger7580
      @tabortoothtiger7580 Рік тому +13

      It's already been commented, but they did have another older horse there to calm them down. Bo is always put with the babies to calm them down. Katie's family have been doing this for years. And these little babies are happy and healthy. They had a stressful day or two, but are now okay. Instead of dragging it out and putting them through several days of trauma like others have suggested. This is the method Katie's family have used for a long time, and it works for them.

    Maybe another method would be less traumatic for the mares and foals?

    • @katievanslykelife
      @katievanslykelife  Рік тому +36

      While others may disagree, this truly can be the least traumatic when done properly. These foals are chill, happy citizens far sooner than those who have their weaning process dragged out. Like I said in the video, there are multiple methods. This is what works for us, and it’s been proven time and time again.

      Have you learned how not to wean, due to physically induced stress? Stress that can create an impact genetically for the rest of their life. Introducing foals after weaning is unnecessary on a farm with several mare and foal pairs.
