  • Have you ever wondered how to work with a book like Patterns of Fashion and transfer a gridded pattern onto life-size paper? This straightforward tutorial explains a simple method for enlarging historical fashion patterns, so you have more resources to work with.
This method allows you to expand outside of only buying commercial patterns for historical fashion and historical sewing, and in turn, the world becomes your oyster.
Once I learned this technique, so many more opportunities fell into my lap.
Some of my favourite historical costuming books that feature patterns on a grid includes:
    -Patterns of Fashion
    -The Victorian Dressmaker
    -Making Working Women's Costume
-The American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Dressmaking
Sewing supplies, camera gear, and fashion books I use:

Dots & Cross paper is truly magical, learning how to use gridded patterns is such a useful skill!!
One tip: when buying a new roll of marked paper, measure between the marks to make sure it's actually 1”x1”, I've been unlucky and come across ones that are just sliiightly off like 1”x1.25” and it throws everything off 😭

Yeah, check that the scale is actually what you think it is, in both directions, because finding out that the “squares” aren’t actually squares, or that what you thought was a 1:2 rectangle is actually 5:9 is going to be annoying after you’ve already started.

Darnit, I love these videos. You really make difficult things understandable. If at any point in future you have time, please do make another historical sewing-tutorial. I'd love an informative video about the ways to finish a seam by hand. I always have trouble especially with heavier, fraying fabrics. And you've become my go to teacher in these things. I just tried honeycomb smocking today for the first time and I love the look of it.

Dot and cross paper is truly a gift to humanity. Because whenever I try to draw a grid myself, something, somewhere always goes wonky. I got a roll of it for myself for Christmas. I'm just about to start tracing some ebay vintage patterns I got from the 30's, 40's & 50's to paper in order to work with the pattern without destroying it. Excellent video! Just bought the cape pattern! I quite fancy a summer day cape for breezy summer days. I have twice scaled up patterns this way and I really enjoyed it, though I did it the long and slightly painful way of drawing out all my own 1” squares, and as one of the patterns was a Victorian skirt it too ages to draw all those little squares. Will definitely get some of that dot and cross paper.

I honestly don’t think I’d be the person to make this video, as I’ve only been sewing for two years so I’m still very much figuring out fit myself. it also depends heavily on the purpose’s unique body measurements so I wouldn’t be able to cover all the possible adjustments, since many of them as well are done at the mock-up stage and there are multiple ways to achieve a certain fit. I’d love though if someone with lots of fitting experience would make a video like this as I’m sure it’d be immensely helpful for people 😊

Aww thank you so much Mitchell for the lovely comment, I really appreciate it! 😊 with regards to the animations where I show the pattern on a digital grid and highlight/circle various parts of it or zoom in/out, I’m using my iPad and Apple Pencil, the programme markup which is built in, and a digital image of the pattern which I drafted directly on the iPad. I also use the built in screen recorder and then just use my editing software to crop out any parts that are showing and might not need to be (like any borders etc.) The Apple Pencil is the true game changer in this entire set up as it makes demonstrating things digitally so much easier.

So very helpful! I have some one-take instructional videos in my vault that are aching for animated support. They add a great deal of professionalism and clarity to your tutorials.
Side note, when I first started sewing I didn't make any patterns to duplicate garments and bags, I just used quick sketches with annotated measurements... I'd measure and remeasure and remeasure again only to cut a piece of stock and realize I forgot to add a seam allowance on one side or scaled one measurement wrong lol.
Anyways, thank you for taking the time to write a detailed response. Sending well wishes, hope you feel better soon!

I'm not really big on copy patterns from a book onto a grid. But when I do, I like to use wrapping paper that has a grid. If your wait until after Christmas its really cheap and you can get it on clearance. After I perfect my pattern is like to transfer it onto freezer paper. From there I can just iron the pattern directly onto the fabric and cut out. I can reuse it as often as I need to.
Funny coincidence that your would be releasing a vape pattern when my duaghter came up too me yesterday and told me she wanted me too make her a cape, Lol. Guess I know what my next pattern purchase will be. 😉

Yes perfect timing for a cape. I have a couple of snoods that I made after not crocheting for a long time. I got back into it just about the time Morgan Donner coined the phrase history bounding. I even made a shawl. I started another shawl but i put it down for a while. I just wasn't feeling it. I think I just needed a break. Lately I've been looking at it thinking about picking up its back up. I have a couple of projects in want to do. Mainly another snood.

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  2 роки тому +2

Exactly! It would still need to be adjusted according to your measurements. But having the base where you can measure the pieces too and see how much the original pattern is, creates a solid foundation for altering a pattern. Also, because seam allowance usually isn’t included for this gridded patterns, it makes alterations much easier
