  • At long last, a Q&A! In this video, I talk about why I started wearing historical fashion daily, the chronology of where I've lived, what I do for work, what my practice of Buddhism looks like, how I stay present in life whilst also filming life, and so much more. I was really craving something a little more relaxed this week, so this was the perfect option. Thanks so much for submitting your questions and for watching!

Hi Vasi, I know how this personal disclosure is hard to do and I appreciate your story. My husbands family is from Vladikavkaz, Russia and it has always been so valuable to plan trips back to the region he grew up for family connection and teaching our son about another culture. He also spent many years in the Perm Ballet school and graduated from there, not far from Bashkortostan. He has spent so much time here in the US and it is nice to be able to learn recipes that he grew up eating and appreciate even the style of dance and history of his family in this region of the southernmost part of Russia. Thanks for sharing :) also this explains my color comments on your videos in the past, hahaha

When living in connection with nature, the beginning and end of planting and harvesting become the natural holidays to celebrate in the spring and autumn. And of course, where I live we have a very old holiday that we still celebrate to some extent that means far more to us than the winter solstice: the return of the sun every January.

Thank you for sharing part of yourself with us! I’ve been meaning to read Braiding Sweetgrass for some time now, and with this reminder I’ll put a hold on it from the library. It sounds like you’ve had a lot of serendipity in your life as well as the courage to take chances. I’m impressed with all the traveling you’ve done! What an adventurous life, I’d definitely want to hear more if you’re ever inclined ❤. As an inclusive Heathen, I’m also an animist, and share many of the feelings and philosophies about nature that you do, and although I’m coming to it much later in life, I feel more fulfilled than ever. I’m making my first historical outfit from the corset to the outer wear, and look forward to adopting historical dress over time as I create each outfit. I’m staring with a late Victorian ensemble, but also plan to do some 18th century as well as some Viking age Scandinavian outfits as well. Your channel has been such an inspiration to me, and I’m grateful to you for sharing your journey with us. Take care.

I'm very interested in trying to sew my own clothes (partly because of you!), but if I do, it'll have to be by hand, because like you, I HATE the sound of a sewing machine. The question of work life balance when one has overlap in "work" and in "leisure" activities is a real one. Doing what you love to do can backfire when it makes a work of love into doing work for work's sake. I think your perspective on that conundrum is a quite good one to have.

  • @anja8595

I had such a hard time connecting to my ancestral home (Serbia) but you have inspired me to try connecting to it through sewing. My grandmother gave me a book of 1960s Serbian handiwork. :)
I appreciated your answer to the questoon on screentime! I relate to the challenge of distancing from screens when friends are far away. How would one practice the sabbath, if their people are connected to through the computer?

I am a classic American Mutt, but i have both some indengenious American roots and Scots-Irish and German roots as well. I was able to meet my German family when I was a child when my father was stationed in West Germany way back in that time. I grew up mostly in America. I am glad to see other cultures and someone embracing indengenious clothing.
As for your quote about connections to the world and Buddhism, I became Pagan both because I have always had ancestral veneration and connection to land and other people. I find it beautiful that once you have the time to look inward and to look deeply into where things come from, it forces you to look into relationships with everything. It also causes a lot of thoughts into intersectionalism. I am glad you are open and welcoming.

My ancestors are from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and I've learned some of the Celtic Languages and write poetry in those forms. It just "feels" right. I do almost all folk fashion/history bounding with linen and wool. I write graphic novels as a way to fulfill my ten year old self that wanted to write fantasy novels, but I also do gardening and am on a raw diet as a balance to doing high end bookkeeping and taxes as my day job. My husband is a devout Buddhist, but I don't like their attitude toward women, so created my own paganism which I demonstrate in my books and tarot cards that has no ties to Classical imagery. I don't have a social life!! :D Well, I have the gardening girls and a few very good friends. But being in my 60s I've learned to just do without all the mental shenangans. I had to learn that when I was working two full time jobs and only had an hour a day to be creative. I too, was homeless, but more tragic as a teen runaway where most of my friends who were prostitutes died of AIDS. You just learn to appreciate the small things like breathing and trees. Love your channel!

I’m of Irish-Norse ancestry, living in America, and a revert to Islam. I just recently began teaching myself to sew small things and fell in awe of your channel and have spiraled into the world of historical clothing. I’m very interested in learning to sew my own historical clothes, which thankfully are usually much more modest naturally, as this is how I dress. My only concern is finding similar/matching fabric for my hijab (that completely covers my hair and neck). I worry it won’t fit into the typical idea of historical fashion from a European view. InshaAllah this I will find some creativity and my own style in this. Thank you for sharing your story and your mind with us ❤️

Lol, so different but a lot alike.. Lower income parents (not from a different country), but from a different region. I was as different here as a peg to a wardrobe in the eighties. No scrupules, I was lunch among Levi's clad and Nike shod peers..
I feel comforted by such a young lady with a firm grasp on real life.
I'm only versed in English as a second language, but I am able to save my life in French, German, and some Danish. Not even a joke, I broke my arm recently in Germany as a Dutch guy. My arm still works despite a border coming in between. As a matter of fact, my surgeon was an arab.
Probably a Muslim, but as an Atheïst I celebrate conviction for I cannot..
He fixed my arm, I don't care his creed..
..and so grateful to 'pretend' German, I should thank my middle school teacher here..

As with the rest of your videos, this has been a fascinating look into your life. I must admit that I was surprised to learn that you grew up in the western US as I was up until this moment convinced that you grew up in Canada due to some of your speech patterns. I was most interested to learn about your philosophical beliefs, because virtually my entire adult life I have considered myself to be a deist, which much as you describe Buddhism has a lot of latitude with regard to beliefs and no strict rules. I also consider myself to be a bit of a pagan because of my deep love and respect for nature and the spirits that dwell within it which I have held since I was a child. On another note, it is because of you that I have become interested in the traditional clothing of a certain branch of my own family, though I do not sew. Lastly, I did not know that you were a singer/songwriter, I look forward to hearing your album when it is released. Sorry this is so long.
PS: I have just added Braiding Sweetgrass to my To Be Read list, thank you for the recommendation.

How did you go from living in your car to Iceland?
I'm currently being kicked off the land where I've been living in my trailer in South-Western Ontario for nine months, and I don't know what the next step is. I've been living under the poverty level for all of my adult life, but I've been able save up and travel to spend the last 11 winters in central Mexico, which has saved my mental health and my life. I've been enamoured of Iceland for many years but it seems very expensive.

as far as the washing goes...does anyone know how they really washed clothes in the past? They literally beat them with a battling stick & plunged them, & lifted them up with sticks & wrung them on a wooden post. I don't realistically think that a modern washing machine gives clothes HALF the abuse that boiling them & beating on them did in the past. In fact, our clothes probably are not all that clean with the modern way of washing, tbh. your clothes are lovely and the colors suit your perfect complexion. I have a daughter that was interested in historical dress for a time & did lots & lots of hand stitching. Kind of wish she was still into it.

Cool video! Thanks! I have a question, what is something you would really love to sew, but probably won't. For me, it's an old fashioned nuns habit. I suppose maybe a Benedictine. The long tunic, scapular, and the big cowl that the choir nuns wear over the habit. Also the veil and cap and wimple, etc. I don't know any Benedictine nuns, and even though there are many, I couldn't donate it to any of them if I did make it because they don't wear those habits anymore. They changed after Vatican II. Plus, I don't even know where I would get a pattern. It's still my dream sewing project though lol. Do you have one and if so, what is it?

Primarily English, but I’ve recently been experimenting with including some Tatar words into poems, mixing the two languages 😊

Its American. Her dad is American and she was born and raised in America. She speaks well, which may be what is throwing you off. Most Americans do not speak with that level of grammar and pronunciation.

@@ps2beckno she doesn’t sound like an american she sounds like an american immigrant. some of the words she says have an accent.

@@ps2beckshe’s multilingual so she has an accent, it’s something other immigrants can tell instantly. and yes americans do properly pronounce words when speaking formally.

@@oscarthagrouch Being multilingual does not automatically give you an accent. Her mother is an American immigrant but she is not. I think she said she was born and raised in California. She speaks somewhat formal but it's more her clear pronunciation of words and high level of grammar that is rare to hear form Americans these days, even in formal situations. It's pleasant and almost sounds a little out of place or like an accent of times past. I'm sure she's picked up little bits of accent from her mom and travels over the years, as we all do, but her accent is definitely American.
