  • If you have a Roberts reel to reel, which doesn't work so well as a tape player any more, it may still have a cool use. Equipped with an EF86 preamp and EL84 power amp, this thing is a 3W jewel for retro, lo-fi guitar tones.

I’m picking one of these beauties up tonight for $45. The guy said it won’t record, so I’m gonna play with it myself tonight and probably take it to the shop tomorrow. It looks pristine and totally retro. I’d like to use it to supplement my digital recording with some nice warm analog .

Motor run capacitors are a common failure item on older tape decks. You can't find the original MP caps anymore, but that's a good thing. Modern capacitors are much better.
Yup. Ceiling fan caps are great replacements and are easy to hook up and mount.
I used one on a Pioneer deck I got from a friend which worked, but would not rewind.
Popped in a fan cap, and all was well.

i love your sentiment about not destroying vintage gear, if you don`t have to. I have this exact model, and the belt ride wheel was full of cracks that penetrated to interior surfaces. Both of my pre amps are ready for necessary cap replacements, and finding a home in some sort of housing. The components in those things are HQ. I did not see ant carbon comp resistors. They all seem to be wire wound.

The Cross Field recording feature has nothing to do with the track selector knob.
Cross Field technology uses a separate bias head which is used during recording.
The track selector knob moves the playback head vertically in order to align it with the tracks selected.
They "advertise" the Cross Field feature on the track selector knob, but that isn't what the Cross Field feature is.

      I did not know that.

@@SeanKerns I believe that the Cross Field recording idea was originally invented by Tandberg. It uses a separate bias head which applies the bias signal during recording from the back side of the tape. I have a Tandberg machine which uses the same technology.

Just tried this with mine but the VU meters on the deck go full blast into the red with only the slightest volume turned up on the guitar and the slight volume turned up on the deck. How are you getting such a good tone with the VU meters hitting at a reasonable level?

Make sure you're using an input that's expecting a line level in, not a mic.
