    Thank you for inviting me to your channel! I had so much fun talking to you!!
    Also, the person that I mentioned that talks about northeastern German folk magic has since changed their username to following the thread

    This is so cool! I lived in Oldenburg for a year. :) My DNA test said I have relatives from Hamburg, that used to be a part of Friesland? Grandpa's name is Fries.

    Thank you for another great interview. I am currently looking in my paternal grandmother’s great grandparents who came to New Zealand in the mid 1800’s. My x2 great grandfather was Danish and his wife was from England of an English mother and Dutch (possibly Frisian) father.

    So interesting to hear about German dialects/minor languages!
    My family is German-Russian Mennonite, and our cultural language is Mennonitsche Plautdietsch.
    My brother is basically the only member of my generation who is fluent (colonial assimilation, whee!), so to hear a (European) German perspective is fascinating.
    Something for me to dig into further. Where _exactly_ did my ancestors originate, before emigrating (over and over)?

    Ahh, I almost wished I could hear the conversation in German to hear you talk about the different traditions in your native language and dailects :D (Greetings from a Berliner). It's fascinating to me to hear about all of these folk practices from my country, you're absolutely right, it's all so close together and yet so different even from one town to another, but growing up in a city I've not been exposed to any of them growing up.

    it’s nice to hear from people from North Germany. I feel like it’s hard to find resources in English that specifically cater to this area (especially Mecklenburg Vorpommern where my family immigrated from :,) )

    Oh! I am so excited for this! My ancestors left northwest Europe for what became the United States centuries ago, which means a lot of my European cultural heritage has been lost. I do know that about a quarter of my ancestry is Scandinavian and another quarter is Northwest Germanic (the other half is from all over the British Isles, so plenty of Germanic/Norse influences there too). I'm looking forward to hearing both of you discuss the two cultures together!

    1:18:00 Very interesting points on being “uprooted” especially as Canadians and Americans of European ancestry. I think you touch on the most important aspects of this. So much folk magic is rooted in the land and spirits of the place. We cannot as North Americans simply appropriate the local culture of our Indigenous peoples, but there are also huge differences in the spirits of the land here from those of where we originated. I feel (UPG type statements here) that our ancestors who settled here brought aspects of the old world with them, especially the larger deity concepts/avatars of their homelands, and that they also “live” here in North America. Understanding our heritage and Ancestors’ Cultures and practices is not just another form of Appropriation, but developing a relationship with the practices of our own indigenous heritage to remain connected to that sense of rootedness, and have an appropriate basis on which to build our practices here upon.

    I find the “Lady Odin” thing funny since I think it’s mentioned somewhere, definitely in the Lokasenna not sure where else, that Odin practiced Seidr which I think was considered feminine. I hear there’s also stories about Odin disguising himself as a woman on his quest for wisdom and knowledge.

    This was so interesting, and I particularly liked that you both spoke about those of us of European descent in Australia, where I am, and the U.S, etc., who want to reconnect with our European heritage. That is something I have really been working on lately, but it is difficult when you don't even know where your Ancestors came from and the only starting point you have is England, lol. Hopefully I will be able to do one of those DNA test things one day, but for now that is just not within my budget 😅

    Omgs, yes! Kölnisch Wasser! I live in Cologne and in trying to learn more about folklore here I started with Kölnisch Wasser, but couldn't find any written sources anywhere myself; Just felt there was something magical about it. I just had read somewhere that Voltaire claimed it "brightens the mind/spirit". Kölnisch Wasser has always felt 'solar' to me (probably due to all the citrus in it) and kinda Florida water adjacent to a degree but not quite, but hearing that I wasn't just imagining these properties and there actually folk magic about it makes me really happy!

    I appreciate both of you so much for helping not only supporting everyone on our own spiritual learning paths, but for those of us who are separated from our ancestral homes, we can learn how to reconnect with that and find connections to our new homes at the same time. I have always felt separated and 'without' a culture of my own, so it is very validating to hear people recognize and encourage new routes to connecting with the world around me and the history that got me here.

    Ich habe das Video noch nicht bis zum Ende geschaut (werde ich noch). Aber das Wort Spökenkieker (in dieser Schreibweise) kenne ich aus meiner Geburtsheimat dem Sauerland. Es wird etwas despektierlich benutzt im Sinne von "der/die sieht wohl Gespenster".
    I haven't watched the video to the end yet (but I will, of course). However, I know the word Spökenkieker (in this spelling) from my native region Sauerland. It is used somewhat disrespectfully in the sense of "he/she sees ghosts".

    PLEASE find a Bavarian witch or shaman for us 🥹😭😭😭😭😭 please. My family immigrated into NY from Bavarian area and it's a little out of touch for western people like me to get hands on good information and witchy information from that area 🥹😭 and you understand the specs 😭😭

    • @TheNorseWitch
      @TheNorseWitch  7 місяців тому +4

      I’d argue that Bavarian shamans don’t exist xD I actually decided to do an interview about northern German practices first because there’s quite a lot of information on southern German practices out there but nobody seems to talk about the northern part of the country. But don’t worry, I’ll definitely cover Bavaria at some point, too!

    • @TheWitchyHomestead
      @TheWitchyHomestead 7 місяців тому +2

      Yeah. My people are just ghosts now basically. I'm a mix of Bavarian and swabian blood/tribes. Every tribe had their own practices ; so. Assuming some tribes would have a shaman and some wouldn't is a little....... Westernized and possibly self limiting belief... I, in my heart, know differently and I know there's gotta be someone's grandma out there that knows something 🥹😭😭 your information is so rich, and unbiased and OPEN minded; this is why I believe you're the oneeee to discover information like that and say hey guys. Did you know actually - this happened in our history. That's why I love ya!. Thank you sis!.

    • @TheNorseWitch
      @TheNorseWitch  7 місяців тому +2

      @TheWitchyHomestead I mean sure if you go WAY back there would probably be some practices you could deem „shamanistic“. But back then Bavaria didn’t even exist, that’s why I said there’s no such thing as Bavarian shamans 😅 I mean harshly speaking shamans only exist in Siberia because that’s where the word came from, but I know you’re probably referring to what’s nowadays usually described as „shamanistic“.
