    By the time this video is up, we will be into day 2 of Philip rearing. So far so good! he is here at work where he lives on my desk. There has been much gratuitous Buffalo Worm consumption. He is eating lots and chirping constantly. I have shown him his fellow House Martins wheeling around the Watertower. He does not seem fussed. I believe he has now shunned his own kind completely and has set his sights on becoming a mighty Eagle. I am going to be attempting to help him exercise in his next video. More plant-related content coming soon!

    Philip is adorable! So lovely to see your children feed him! About three weeks ago my husband brought a baby blue tite home which was fell in front of our door (front garden)! I fed him for two days and he could fly away when I took him out on to the tree near our front door where his parents were kind of waiting for him and he got reunited with his family.

      Another lovely tale. I am just feeding him now before he will probably go to sleep for the night. I'm not sure if he is old enough to fly away properly yet. I am going to try to encourage him to practice flying tomorrow. Safely, obviously.

    Very nice and interesting. He seems very comfortable there with your family. He may not want to leave.

    Enjoy him while you have him. I took in an American Kestral fledgling with a broken wing and he actually lived in one of my cockatiel cages. He'd often fly to the top of the curtain rods and I'd say BJ back to your cage and he'd fly down once healed up. I had him for 3 months feeding him raw liver. When I let him go he flew around for a while before taking off for good. Was a wonderful experience.

    Bravo, Oliver, Harry and Emma. You are doing a great job raising wee Philip (kudos on spelling Philip properly too). I am behind on watching videos, so am crossing my fingers that all is still well there.

      To be honest, I should have chosen something gender neutral! Like Hellhammer, Rainbow or Birdy McBirdface.

      Philip has rain water for drinkies. However, he is quite fond of a cold bottle of Newcastle Brown ale. Too sweet for me, But he likes it.

      I will raise him as one of my own. I'm already looking forward to his first day at school, going to college, his first festival and teaching him to drive.

    Please take care that you don't feed him to much sawdust along with the worms. It can clog up his food sack in the throat. Do you also give him water?

    • @OliversGreenhouse
      @OliversGreenhouse  6 років тому

      I blow the worms off after decanting them before feeding. I have also been feeding him horse flies which come in the office. I am feeding him rain water with a teaspoon which he is drinking quite happily. I am going back to get some more live food later. Suggestions on larger food?

      Oliver's Greenhouse I think flies will be good even when he is bigger, since that should be his natural food anyways. You could also try moths, and encourage him to catch them himself. Swallows tend to catch their food in midair, so anything that flies is good. You can also try to bounce him on your fingers to make him flutter his wings to build up strength when he is a bit better

    • @OliversGreenhouse
      @OliversGreenhouse  6 років тому

      I have been encouraging him to flap his wings since I had found him. I think his wing was bruised because he was a little tentative at first. He now flaps when you bounce him up and down on your fingers. I have another idea for exercising him in a safe environment. I will film that later this week. He does catch his own food off the table and is quite happy running around after bugs. I'm not sure how I could feed him flies brought from a shop. Are there such things as flightless ones? We get lots of moths near the garden light at night. I will collect a load tonight. 👍

      I work at a very big petstore in Germany. We sell Terfly, which are flies that have crippled wings so they can't really fly more than a few cm... Those might be good for starters. We also sell fly larvae for fishing, those hatch into proper flies that can fly that might be good when he starts to fly. I don't know what's available in the UK, but check the boxes and pick the ones with the most pupa in them, because they take a while to hatch. If Philip doesn't want to start catching stuff in flight take him back to work, pin his box to the wall and feed him there... Sooner or later he should copy his fellow Swallows and learn from them how to do it properly

      Thanks for the pointers. I will have a look in the pet shop. 👍
