This lowkey reminds me of post-apartheid South Africa where we had a "government of national unity" and FW De Klerk (last apartheid president) was made deputy president alongside the newly democratically voted Mandela administration. A lot of white South Africans who were complicit and actively involved in the, quite frankly, crimes against humanity enacted against Black and Brown South Africans were absorbed into multiple industries of the economy and government post-apartheid. I grew up in Durban and was 13 years old at the time of the 1994 election. I have not lived in SA since 1999, but came to know my home country through literature. What a sheltered upbringing i had. Several years ago i read a kind of leftist journalist type essay on the diplomatic manouvering necessary to secure a "sensible" transtion to power. Western elites considered bhutelezi for a time, but ended up putting their money on Mandela. There never was such a thing as a democratic miracle in southern africa, though i shed no tears for the old regime. It was overwhelmingly disturbing to me, upon visting SA, and pondering on the fortunes of all those well to do christian evangelicals whom i had grown up with, and who had secured their wealth under apartheid.

At some point, denazification was also declared complete in the East and no more right-wing violence was officially brought to trial. However, this was less due to good denazification and more to the fact that orders were given from above that there should be no such thing. Right-wing crimes in the GDR were described differently or not associated with right-wing sentiments, because such things were not allowed to happen in the GDR. After reunification, neo-Nazi groups from the West went to the East and found the perfect breeding ground to grow. Political scientists in the 1980s and 90s have already said that about 10-15% of German society follows right-wing ideas and does not participate in elections because the parties standing for election do not offer them a suitable leadership figure. All democratic parties are ultimately to blame for the fact that the extreme elements of society are gaining ground, none of them has a sensible solution. Just two notes about guys you mentioned; Heusinger was present at the giving of the commissar’s order, and Globke’s boss was at the wansee conference. Globke got his freedom by testifying against many Nazis, but defending his boss specifically. Also you might get into him in the next episode but wolff was the highest ranking SS officer surviving the war, easily could have been in the first trial, instead escaped all trial.

In my country, Chile, many germans settled before and after WW2, and a bulk of them are straight up nazi and call for the extermination of indigenous people, specially my people the Mapuche. German settlers never went through denazification as the state never made any campaigns. This is also true for Argentina, where many of our brothers, the Mapuche-Tehuelche, are harrased by fascists.
Chile has a fairly long history of involvement with Germany. The German Empire was in large parts responsible for building up the Chilean army, which is why it looks so German, so the relationship goes back a long time. It therefore wasn't exactly surprising that Chile was the first port of call for Nazis trying to escape justice.

If you look at history, overall, things have been getting consistently better for the average human. Mortality, hunger, poverty, it all has been consistently going down over the centuries. No doubt, many thing are still bad, many people still live in poverty, lack proper health care, etc. But all these things are fixable, and there are many good people on this planet! @@philipm3173 I'm studying environmental science, and there certainly a lot of major problems. But they're again all solvable, and many have been solved in the past. The big example is preventing the collapse of the ozone layer through international cooperation. Solving these issues is certainly not easy, but neither were they easy to solve in the past. There will always be new problems to solve too, but that's just the human experience. To me the important message is: we can make things better, and I'm going to try to do my part. Don't loose hope!

Please do a video on the "Estado Novo" dictatorship in Portugal. A 50 year long dictatorship who (while nominally neutral during WWII) collaborated with and took direct inspiration from nazi Germany and Mussolini's Italy. Communists and other leftists and democrats were subjected to imprisonment, torture and widespread persecution.
He didn't collaborate with the Axis and actually condemned the Nazi regime policies, starting with the racial ones. Where is that alleged collaboration? There have been comparisons made between his Estado Novo and Mussolini's Italy, in the way the State and society were structured, but that's about it. Along with forbidding communist and other left-wing parties, he also forbade fascistic ones. The only country he had close ties with was Francoist Spain, mainly during the Spanish Civil War as he supported the Nationalists, but didn't take direct involvement in the conflict.

It does get acknowledged that the denazification didn't do much (unfortunately, they don't talk about the reasons for this), until 68 when the student movement and ensuing quasi revolution cleaned up most of it. I've been meaning to read up on this but haven't had the time yet. My impression is that it's due to a complex convergence of factors. The fall of the GDR and the delegitimization of it after reunification annihilated militant leftism in Germany. The SED rebranded as parliamentary, reformist 'democratic socialists' so there wasn't any truly organized and principled left party in the country that gave working people the impression that their concerns were heard anymore. The far right swooped in, pretending to care about the 'little guy.' Successful obscuration of the real causes behind the East's slumping economy by the media and mainstream politics made people look for scapegoats - immigrants. The economic troubles of the 90s and 00s also gave rise to individualistic tendencies. But there were still some social and cultural remnants of the GDR like widespread atheism which meant that these new racist conservative types didn't really fit into any of the parties of Germany's mainstream. The arch-conservative CDU made massive gains but was ultimately too moderate, respectable and religious for many people, there needed to be something just as conservative but more radical - a party that gets things done. Initially that party was the NPD but that was probably too openly fascistic, so the AfD was created precisely to be a haven for this kind of new conservatism that's prevalent in the US as well - people who are outright fascists when it comes to social politics like LGBT rights and immigration but who are outraged when you call them Nazis (the Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro types) those are the kind of people who vote for the AfD and they're more prevalent in the East because of the reasons I mentioned earlier. That's my take on it but like I said I haven't done enough reading on this yet
@@bit7389 denazification was objectively better in the east in all measures. i dont think anyone said it was successful, just that it's hypocritical to deflect from one's own failure. east germany got pillaged by western capital, throwing the region into a massive crisis. moreover, many of those afd guys come from the west, east germany had a ban of right-wing parties while the west allowed the far right parties to flourish, paving the way for them to exert greater political influence in the whole of united germany. the east never abolished classes, moved resolutely toward communism, and had huge problems, it is also complicit in the rise of the far right. but if you look honestly at the numbers, it's the west that fucked up much more, and it's the west german state that is relevant here because it's the current state of the whole of germany.

I am a US citizen living in Berlin, and the patterns are the same in much of northern USA and East Germany. The support of the AFD is the same as the support of Trump. East Germany became de-industrialized and social benefits are perpetually taken away and less and less investment. In Northern US cities it is the same, de-industrialization and loss of liberal social policies. So of course they go to a right party if there is no legitimate left party or politicians. But this is also then becomes propaganda lie. Look how quickly the East Germans support Sahra Wagenknecht. The most “far right” thing she says is not everyone can come to Germany limited immigration. But in both the USA and Germany anti-immigration is always framed as xenophobic or racist. It can be, but in the East it also is more likely a demand that the government invest in them and not Ausländer. Many Marxists supported the rights of workers to fight to restrict immigration. Among them was Engels, Lenin, and in the USA Ceasar Chavez. Two many immigrants flood the labor supply and then depress wages so the capitalist get the advantages. This lowkey reminds me of post-apartheid South Africa where we had a "government of national unity" and FW De Klerk (last apartheid president) was made deputy president alongside the newly democratically voted Mandela administration. A lot of white South Africans who were complicit and actively involved in the, quite frankly, crimes against humanity enacted against Black and Brown South Africans were absorbed into multiple industries of the economy and government post-apartheid. It's disgusting.

I grew up in Durban and was 13 years old at the time of the 1994 election. I have not lived in SA since 1999, but came to know my home country through literature. What a sheltered upbringing i had. Several years ago i read a kind of leftist journalist type essay on the diplomatic manouvering necessary to secure a "sensible" transtion to power. Western elites considered bhutelezi for a time, but ended up putting their money on Mandela. There never was such a thing as a democratic miracle in southern africa, though i shed no tears for the old regime. It was overwhelmingly disturbing to me, upon visting SA, and pondering on the fortunes of all those well to do christian evangelicals whom i had grown up with, and who had secured their wealth under apartheid.

The first thing to say is that there is nothing to glorify about Lina E.. She is not a fighter against fascism, but a street fighter who rightly went to prison with her accomplices. There is a right and a wrong way to fight against other opinions, the second one easily leads to prison.
The part about the rather pragmatic denazification in West Germany is nothing really new, it quotes from various documentaries that are often shown on television.
The second part about denazification in East Germany is incomplete. Here, the beginnings under Soviet leadership are discussed, but the fact that not every old Nazi could be put in prison in the East (whether for lack of space or pragmatism) is only hinted at. At some point, denazification was also declared complete in the East and no more right-wing violence was officially brought to trial. However, this was less due to good denazification and more to the fact that orders were given from above that there should be no such thing. Right-wing crimes in the GDR were described differently or not associated with right-wing sentiments, because such things were not allowed to happen in the GDR. After reunification, neo-Nazi groups from the West went to the East and found the perfect breeding ground to grow.

Political scientists in the 1980s and 90s have already said that about 10-15% of German society follows right-wing ideas and does not participate in elections because the parties standing for election do not offer them a suitable leadership figure. All democratic parties are ultimately to blame for the fact that the extreme elements of society are gaining ground, none of them has a sensible solution. If it continues like this, right-wing, left-wing and religious fanatics (as well as criminal family clans) will soon be fighting openly in the streets. For every normal citizen, this can only be bad. Our leaders here in the states have picked up the mantle, but with the peculiarities of our management style. In my country, Chile, many germans settled before and after WW2, and a bulk of them are straight up nazi and call for the extermination of indigenous people, specially my people the Mapuche. German settlers never went through denazification as the state never made any campaigns. This is also true for Argentina, where many of our brothers, the Mapuche-Tehuelche, are harrased by fascists.
Chile has a fairly long history of involvement with Germany. The German Empire was in large parts responsible for building up the Chilean army, which is why it looks so German, so the relationship goes back a long time. It therefore wasn't exactly surprising that Chile was the first port of call for Nazis trying to escape justice.

Solving these issues is certainly not easy, but neither were they easy to solve in the past. There will always be new problems to solve too, but that's just the human experience.
To me the important message is: we can make things better, and I'm going to try to do my part. Don't loose hope!

He didn't collaborate with the Axis and actually condemned the Nazi regime policies, starting with the racial ones. Where is that alleged collaboration? There have been comparisons made between his Estado Novo and Mussolini's Italy, in the way the State and society were structured, but that's about it. Along with forbidding communist and other left-wing parties, he also forbade fascistic ones. The only country he had close ties with was Francoist Spain, mainly during the Spanish Civil War as he supported the Nationalists, but didn't take direct involvement in the conflict.

I study German and Italian literature in university, during which we talk a lot about this Erinnerungskultur. It does get acknowledged that the denazification didn't do much (unfortunately, they don't talk about the reasons for this), until 68 when the student movement and ensuing quasi revolution cleaned up most of it. I've been meaning to read up on this but haven't had the time yet. My impression is that it's due to a complex convergence of factors. The fall of the GDR and the delegitimization of it after reunification annihilated militant leftism in Germany. The SED rebranded as parliamentary, reformist 'democratic socialists' so there wasn't any truly organized and principled left party in the country that gave working people the impression that their concerns were heard anymore. The far right swooped in, pretending to care about the 'little guy.' Successful obscuration of the real causes behind the East's slumping economy by the media and mainstream politics made people look for scapegoats - immigrants. The economic troubles of the 90s and 00s also gave rise to individualistic tendencies. But there were still some social and cultural remnants of the GDR like widespread atheism which meant that these new racist conservative types didn't really fit into any of the parties of Germany's mainstream. The arch-conservative CDU made massive gains but was ultimately too moderate, respectable and religious for many people, there needed to be something just as conservative but more radical - a party that gets things done. Initially that party was the NPD but that was probably too openly fascistic, so the AfD was created precisely to be a haven for this kind of new conservatism that's prevalent in the US as well - people who are outright fascists when it comes to social politics like LGBT rights and immigration but who are outraged when you call them Nazis (the Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro types) those are the kind of people who vote for the AfD and they're more prevalent in the East because of the reasons I mentioned earlier. That's my take on it but like I said I haven't done enough reading on this yet
@@bit7389 denazification was objectively better in the east in all measures. i dont think anyone said it was successful, just that it's hypocritical to deflect from one's own failure. east germany got pillaged by western capital, throwing the region into a massive crisis. moreover, many of those afd guys come from the west, east germany had a ban of right-wing parties while the west allowed the far right parties to flourish, paving the way for them to exert greater political influence in the whole of united germany. the east never abolished classes, moved resolutely toward communism, and had huge problems, it is also complicit in the rise of the far right. but if you look honestly at the numbers, it's the west that fucked up much more, and it's the west german state that is relevant here because it's the current state of the whole of germany.

I am a US citizen living in Berlin, and the patterns are the same in much of northern USA and East Germany. The support of the AFD is the same as the support of Trump.
East Germany became de-industrialized and social benefits are perpetually taken away and less and less investment. In Northern US cities it is the same, de-industrialization and loss of liberal social policies.
So of course they go to a right party if there is no legitimate left party or politicians.
But this is also then becomes propaganda lie. Look how quickly the East Germans support Sahra Wagenknecht. The most “far right” thing she says is not everyone can come to Germany limited immigration.
But in both the USA and Germany anti-immigration is always framed as xenophobic or racist. It can be, but in the East it also is more likely a demand that the government invest in them and not Ausländer.
Many Marxists supported the rights of workers to fight to restrict immigration. Among them was Engels, Lenin, and in the USA Ceasar Chavez.
Two many immigrants flood the labor supply and then depress wages so the capitalist get the advantages.

Nationalism can be left wing or centrist. Left wing nationalism took place in DDR/East Germany to the certain degree. Despite it didnt manifest itself as clearly as in Romania under Ceausescu or Albania during the time of Enver Hoxha.
Maybe we are confused with concepts. I stand on the position that nationalism in politics is about particularism and isolationism as opposition to universalism and globalism in combination with exclusive views on ethnic and national identy.
