'07-'14 Ford EXPEDITION/F150 POWER RUNNING BOARD Problems? Here's how I fixed them!

  • Our new to us 2011 Ford Expedition Limited EL has the power folding running boards. While this is a nice feature when brand new, after 8-9 years of use, the wear and tear can present some problems. We purchased this vehicles with the running boards sold as "inoperable", but with a little time and some elbow grease, they are working like new!

    You're lucky. I bought a 2007 Lincoln Navigator from a GMC dealer and just found out there are running boards! I haven't got them to move yet, but I can see that underneath, there is nothing where the rocker panels are. I got myself a rust bucket! Good job! Glad you got a good deal. Another case of them not wanting to spend one second on a non GM unit! Thanks!

    Lubricant works for a little while. Eventually you will find that the motor housing bushings bind as well. I fixed mine by drilling a small hole in the running board motor case about half way up. I used transmission fluid but any hydraulic or power steering fluid will work. Squirt oil in the motor case and put a self tapping machine screw in the hole. I put oil in mine 2 years ago and haven’t had an issue since.

      I used the Ford TechMakuLoco method. Clean them really well with WD-40 and Kroil (or your favorite rust buster), get them running really well, then clean them out with Brake Kleen, and finally put on the Fluid Film. Ford Dealer told me directly "The motors are shot, the boards are frozen in place, you HAVE to replace them for a few grand". I said NOPE. I went in a week later and showed him smooth as pudding running boards and said "You should be ashamed". He was "wow, tech said they were frozen". I said "Let me talk to the tech". Of course the tech wasn't there...yea...Been working for 3 months now, and I know I'll have to clean and re-apply fluid film again (probably in the fall).

      Scott Carden I'm very interested in more info with regard to drilling into the housing. My drivers side running board is not working & the motorr is making a lot of noise. I did the lube thing pb blaster, wd, fluid film and it worked well for 2 months then out of the blue started acting up. Did the lube again, helped the board up into the retract position, now won't deploy at all.

    I have a 2016 f150. Had the same issue. I used motorcycle chain lubricant and it worked great. The plus is that unlike other oils dirt and crap doesn’t seem to collect in the oil and cause the unit to get gummed up again. I just give them a spray in the spring after cleaning them up and do it again in the fall to keep things in tip top shape

    We have a 2010 Ford F150 Platinum 4 door. Alot of things look like our truck: interior, assume that's pearl paint, same rims. The driver's side running board periodically hangs up like this and spraying down with lubricant has been the fix so far. It has 165,000 miles, we and former owner kept it washed and had the carwash do the undercarriage more often in the winter. We're in the northeast where salt is used on the roads excessively in the winter. Well, there's some rust at the bottoms of the wheelwells so took it to our preferred bodyshop to get them fixed. To do this they took the bed off. I stopped by to see how things are going but it was after hours. Holy crap! The frame is really rusty! Will be going in to discuss this: is it normal, fixable, safe?? Mentioning this to you to give you a heads-up because I noticed quite a bit of rust on your undercarriage. You may want to investigate that. I'd attach a picture but I don't know how.

    • @65SEEJAYFIVE

      Sorry for the late reply as you may have gotten this fixed already, but my guess is that the gears or something stripped in the motor and while it works/runs, it can’t engage the actual running board.

      The running boards may be turned off in the settings on the dash. Scroll through the settings and turn them on first. If that doesn’t work. Check the fuse for them. If they still don’t work and are really rusty then motor and hinges replacement is probably needed. And if you are thinking of doing it at home just to let you know they are very hard to come apart. Very hard!!

    Running board motor

  • @scottcarden8236
    @scottcarden8236 3 роки тому +6

    Ok so the company that builds them for ford doesn’t lubricate them properly from factory. As I I am sure you know they are very expensive to repair or replace. Mine on my 2014 started to malfunction and stick. I was looking for a more permanent solution. I removed the running boards by unbolting them from the frame and unplugging them. Flip them over on a pair of sawhorses. I drilled a small 1/8 hole in each gear case careful not to get to many shavings inside. I them filled the gear cases half full of synthetic motor oil but probably any synthetic lube will work.I them put a self tapping hex Head screw in each hole and put them back on. It’s been almost 3 years and I’ve not added lube or had an issue.
    Now with yours if the gears are not stripped which I don’t think they are. And if the motor is not burnt up. Which the fuse should have blown first. There is a fuse for them. When you lube the outside of them it only works on the external bushings. Most of these fail due to a gear case bushing.
    The screw is in a spot that I can get to with the running boards on the vehicle and high enough to hold lube. I have a 2014 king ranch. I’m active on expedition forum or contact me at scottcarden2018@icloud.com

      They're not going to need new motors. So if you notice they start getting slow again don't wait until there fighting to go up and down because then you'll kill the motors. I have had 2 F-150s with them and still have them now and I live in CT so there is some up keep needed. So the best thing you can do is take the hinges off and put them in a vise sideways and try to get silicone spray in the hinges and keep going back and forth. Then flip it so you can do the other side of the hinges until it feels loose. There simple to take off and definitely worth keeping up with because there way over priced. They don't just sell the motors. Each hing with the motor is $600.
