    Next time, you guys should use larger safety mats! Had Julia fallen a slightly different way, she would have slammed her head into the concrete and would have suffered _severe_ head/brain trauma.
    The mats should probably extend at least 1.5x to 2.0x the height of the individual from the individuals position at any point.
    Take safety seriously, guys!

    the secret is to get ... balanced

  • @JWQweqOPDH
    @JWQweqOPDH 8 років тому +47

    RAISING YOUR ARMS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TOOTHPICK. Raising your arms ONLY increases your moment of inertia, it actually slightly raises your center of gravity. Since the toothpick is in static equilibrium, the magnitude of moment of inertia DOES NOT MATTER, the only important thing the fork/spoon does is lower the center of gravity. The toothpick balances by the center of gravity being BELOW the support point. A tight rope walker actively keeps their center of gravity about directly above the point of support. The higher moment of inertia gives them a slower rotational acceleration when falling, so that they have more time to correct themselves by temporarily spinning themselves towards the fall artificially faster in order to produce a force against the rope towards the side their falling in order for the rope to push back the other way and allow them to get more mass on the opposite side, allowing gravity to produce a torque that slows their rotation towards the fall that they had previously purposely increased.

      don't know what the hell they are talking about...

    • @AayamS
      @AayamS 8 років тому

      +JWQweqOPDH exactly, thats what i was saying. That being said, u can always view it as a relationship between lateral vs vertical distribution of mass. If you only increase only laterally but not vertically, relative to the height, the weight is spread more. easier to balance.(then again, its easier cuz moment of inertia increases)

  • @DemonXeron
    @DemonXeron 8 років тому +19

    The centre of mass is not lowered when you put your arms out, but you are right about the inertia.
    The centre of mass of a human body is at the naval (around the belly button). With your arms down by your sides (standard state) your mass sits their comfortably. Raising your arms will raise the centre of mass but allow you to make adjustments for rotational forces to attempt to keep your centre of mass over the rope, instability from this causes you to fall further and further off the rope until eventually you reach the limit you can recover your CoM.
    Some tight rope poles bend at the ends lowering the centre off mass (Assuming the CoM of the pole and your arms is below your naval) This makes it easier.
    Unless you hold a significantly heavy pole below your naval, it would be hard to lower you CoM by any significant degree. What the long pole does is lower your CoM compared to the arms out method and allows (using a degree of skill) the user to better control the rotational forces around the rope.
    Nice try on explaining a fairly complex system, the demonstration was good too.

      I agree, Joanna, and also not; I'm just being concerned here. Normally I think female hosts, however lovely, shouldn't have to hear all these unsolicited compliments, but when that poor thing falls over and I cannot be there for her, helping her up, asking how she is and if the baby is ok, you know I just have to express it in the comments. Empathy, girl, just centered a bit lower on the body.

    Firstly, when you were explaining what Centre of Gravity(CoG) was you said it balances along top and bottom, that's wrong. That's more appropriate for the definition of Centre of Mass. Centre of Gravity shifts as you rotate the non-uniform body.
    Secondly, spreading your arms raises your Centre of Gravity because the mass is constant. You only bring it down with the pole because of its weight. Which is why a moderately heavy pole works better than, say Balsa wood of the same dimensions.

    So hear me out. It’s a common misconception that having your arms out to the side helps you balance. It’s does the opposite! When walking a line, you want your arms up more than you do to the side! You can move your arms to adjust your balance but it’s easier to be thrown off if they’re out to the sides!

    This video is half wrong. Raising your arms doesn't lower your center of gravity. The balancing pole (or your extended arms) also don't help you recover your balance by lowering your CG. The spoon/fork balance because the CG is below the balancing point. On the tightrope, you would need to lower your arms or the steel bar below the rope (balance point) for the same effect. The reason the steel bar works is it has a high amount of rotational mass. This allows you to correct your position by rotating the bar clockwise or counter-clockwise. Extended arms have the same effect.
