He declined the safety wiring harness but city of Niagara would not allow the walk unless he wore it. He did the Grand Canyon without it. The guy has got balls bigger than Earth.

I love how people are so quick to discredit this man because he had a harness.. if you followed you would have known that they made him wear it in order for him to even do this. Still an amazing feat nonetheless because he made it across without having to use it. This man = legend.

Saw this entirely live as I stood with my family on the Canadian side at Table Rock and was happy to see him kneel down and do his fist-pumping YET I never realized he was being interviewed during this actual walk...near me, a person in the crowd had a radio listening to the commentary...WATCHING THIS IN PERSON IS TRULY A HISTORICAL MOMENT FOREVER WITNESSED.

Having such a privilege to see such a special guy with my own specialties, it hurts to see his family look like Sylvester Stalone's son's character in Rocky V being held on the side looking like a scrub while Rocky teaches a student who never had ENOUGH hardships to learn on his own. Now, if Rocky were real, he has worse brain-injuries just because of doing street fighting due to his naive adventure into a naive student.

If you watch a show here on YT called: Daredevils - The Sky Walker, it shows an extreme climber/rope walker named Dean Potter that walks across a rope thousands of feet above the ground completely untethered!!! No safety harnesses, backup lines or parachutes!!! Also from the same show "Daredevils - The Human Bird" is about Jeb Corliss, an extreme BASE jumper. Nik Wallenda, Jeb Corliss, and Dean Potter are all crazy if you ask me! lol. They're great documentaries though, check them out! ☺

They wouldn't let him cross without the harness, Think about it if he fell into Niagara falls they wouldn't be able to save him or maybe find him for a few days, where as he cross the Grand Canyon they could see where he fell. Thankfully he crossed without fail. A little note to remember he has been walking the line since he was 2 years old. If you tried you would fall at your first few steps :)

Nik did great, and I have nothing but the highest regard for what he did. I do however think the harness took a lot out of the evening. I left very satisfied with what I saw, but if the walk were done without the harness, I think I would still be tingling with excitment.
