    Two years ago I would have never thought I would be able to run 5 kms. 1 km was my norm and 3 was the limit. I ran several 10 kms so far and am preparing for a half-marathon. Its cool how quickly the body adapts when you start pushing it.

      +Phantomhive That might be true. But in under a week ( if you ran every day and pushed yourself ) you can reach 2x the distance you originally started out. It might be off putting at 1st but like most things, the more you do it, the better you become :)

    I have to admit I'm the weird runner you love to hate. At 56 years old I ran a trail marathon, then a 50K up a mountain, and three weeks later ran a marathon. At every ultra, I meet people who routinely run 100 miles. The human body is amazing. The worst thing you can do for your body is sitting all day. The human body loves physical challenges and will adapt. It can be running, crossfit, mtn biking, etc. I'm planning my next challenge now.

    Oddly enough the worst thing to run or walk on are sidewalks, asphalt is just slightly better. Best to stick to more natural surfaces( i.e. Horse trails, grass and tracks) I wouldn't recommend beach running, as most are uneven, which can lead to lateral and medial strains in the ankles and feet. As with any type of physical activity moderation is the key.

    • @savalavaloy3549
      @savalavaloy3549 8 років тому

      +Paul Lucas I agree with everything you just said. After running on a really bumpy trail and the concrete footpath, I got a really big pain in my shins, and I haven't been able to comfortably run for the past 2 months.
      Run safely, people!

    • @paullucas4846
      @paullucas4846 8 років тому +1

      +Savannah Egerton Sounds like you have the dreaded runners curse, shin splints. This has several causes, micro fractures along the tibia, strains near the talus and fascia inflammation(this is the most common). I recommend the R.I.C.E. treatment with some foam rolling for the distal leg on all sides, as well as using a ball for the bottom of the foot (lacrosse balls are the best). Switch to some cross training like swimming. When you do get back to running, I would suggest to cut your mileage by a 1/3 and use an ankle support and of course a good pair of fitted shoes.

    • @savalavaloy3549
      @savalavaloy3549 8 років тому

      ***** Yeah, I had assumed I had shin splints :( Thanks for that information! I also had something wrong with my plantar fascia on the same leg, so maybe that leg will forever be ruined D:
      I have been bicycling to try and keep fit while recovering, but I don't feel as good after biking as I do after running. Of well, maybe with those treatments you mentioned I can get better faster! Have you ever had shin splints before?

    • @paullucas4846
      @paullucas4846 8 років тому +1

      +Savannah Egerton Yes, I've had both shin splints and plantar fasciitis, mine was due to fallen arches but there are other causes that lead to inflammation of the the plantar fascia such as incline running, imbalance in muscular development in the calf and bone spurs. It's not forever ruined but will take some time to heal with treatment, anywhere from 6 -12 weeks. I would recommend the treatment I said before with additional treatments of stretching the big toe up repetitively throughout the day and using frozen water bottles(the smaller ones) to roll the bottom of the foot, just make sure you wear socks to buffer it, as you don't want to burn the bottom of your feet. Depending on the severity of the inflammation a compression boot may also be needed as well as surgery (in extreme cases or if there is bone spurs involved). Good luck, hope this helps.

      ***** Wow you seem to know your stuff! :) Are you a physiotherapist or something? You seem very well educated on this stuff :D
      Yeah, my plantar fascia seems all better now. It used to click, kinda, and feel like a rubber band breaking in the arch of my foot. Idk if that was inflammation, but oh well :D I just left it for three months without turning suddenly on that foot so it went away :)

    • @MCCCLXXIII
      @MCCCLXXIII 8 років тому +81

      +HapZungLam Yes, on a per distance (mileage, NOT SPEED), a well trained human has the ability to outrun the majority of animals in a single running session before needing to rest due to our exceptional ability to vent heat very effectively through pores unlike many furry animals that overheat with much more ease.
      Of course there are migratory animals such as wolves, who essentially run for a living so perhaps they can outrun us. Have a read on Google-Scholar, you might find a case study about it as I am by no means a specialist on the topic.

There was a research conducted on a tribe (I don't remember where that tribe is but I'm pretty sure it was some place that has a huge body of water) and they found out that they were able to hold their breath significantly longer than the average person because they were evolved to go fishing by using their hands and a small knife and since most Americans has stop running a lot for quite some time now, they have probably evolved to not last longer than the average person.

    Anybody who runs track knows that long distance takes training. You can’t just decide to run thousands of miles without insane amounts of training. Even then, some people are better suited to short distance sprinting. Which is why we have different event in track and field, like long distance, sprints, relays, and different field events. It’s similar to muscle cells. Everyone is born with the exact amount of muscle segments (couldn’t remember what they’re called) that they will ever have, but generally most people, including me, probably couldn’t run 3 straight miles without collapsing.

    • @savalavaloy3549
      @savalavaloy3549 8 років тому +30

      +foday S The heart is strengthened, and loses fat as there is a wall with a load of fat in it, and if you don't run, (or do any cardio) the fat grows and affects the way your heart pumps blood. (This is all only what I remember from year 9 health class)
      So apart from the joint and cartilage degeneration, it is overall really healthy for you, just SACRIFICE THOSE KNEES!

    • @foday529

      Savannah Egerton so the knees don't regenerate?
      Also i have noticed I can now sense my heart beating more while laying on the floor on my left side. Sometimes I can feel it beat while I am laying on my back...is that normal?

    • @savalavaloy3549
      @savalavaloy3549 8 років тому +2

      As said in this video, knees do regenerate (like the doctor. Ha.) but the impact of running still isn't good on your leg joints after a while :)
      I actually don't know about that one, (after all I am only 17 :D) but I'm assuming it has to do with how your heart is positioned (although it is at the centre of your body, the left side is slightly larger than the right) so since there is more of it to the left, maybe the pressure of your right lung on your heart from gravity makes you be able to feel its' beating? Don't instantly believe this, though :) It is just my theory :D

    I freaking love runners high. I used to smoke pot too, so it's extra rewarding for me. I like the idea that we are hard-wired to enjoy running, because it's much more motivating to get up and move. Although genetics may also play a part (such as if your parents were runners or not). Well anyways, I first noticed my runners high when I started to do 20 minute 5km runs, and I'd reach this point in my training where my heart is working its hardest and my muscles were burning where I'd feel extremely happy almost like my neurons were firing in just a way that made me feel "high", as if on cannabis or I had ingested THC... like it was my brains way of telling me, "good job" and to keep going. Really love the aspect of pushing yourself to new heights of physical fitness. It really brings on a whole new level of confidence, too. I was never really all that into running as a teenager, but as soon as I hit my 20's it became a favourite activity especially in the evenings when the weather is nice and cool. ^_^ peace out~

    • @Valentine350z
      @Valentine350z 8 років тому +4

      Suzie boo It hurts because we, flat footers, tend to over pronate when running. This results in more stress on the feet, knees and hips, and can cause serious issues if left unchecked. If feel pain when running and have flat feet (fallen arches), then buy a pair of stability control shoes (most brands have them). If the pain is severe, then go for motion control shoes. If you have pain even when walking, then see a doctor and get custom made soles for shoes, then will provide extra support.

    This was a very interesting video, you mentioned that we were built for running based on historic hunting for survival although you never answered whether it harms you or not in the long term, which I found odd as I assumed that was the question you were attempting to answer based on the title of the video. Then you talked about joints degrading and tendons growing during a marathon run but never stated a lasting impact on the body post-marathon.
    Anyway, I'll just make the assumption that running in medium amounts is healthy and supposedly prolongs life and ligament strength.

    So homo sapiens chased their prey until the prey collapsed from exhaustion and that's the only way we could have hunted? Am I the only one finding this theory highly far fetched? A more logical theory would have been that since ancient humans were nomads, we had to move quickly from one shelter to another during the day. The worst runners got left behind and didn't make the night. Thus, only the best long distance runners reproduced.

  • @heartofthedarklight

    Hey Dnews, you should follow up this video with how to run properly. With the modern shoes we've gone from running how we were built to utilising the soft heel that come with shoes. This heel striking causes more damage to the bones and joints.
    Parkour is a great example of how this would mess up them if they heel stroked. They tend to fall from greater heights with higher impact. They train to beanie to continue to be able to do it well into their 60s. The secret is learning how people use to walk and run before the modern shoes. Taking off your shoes you will find heel striking to be painful. That's because the force goes through your bones. Shifting to the forefoot or balls of your feet will instead mean that the energy will be distribute to the muscles. You will also feel more springy and you create less noise while running.

    I like to run, but not like some people I see that will go out and run in rain, snow, 90 degree weather. I don't know why I like, I guess it's just kind of cool to hear the air go by which when you walk you don't get.
    Walking I think I've done a couple miles at once. If I run full speed I can't maintain it real long before I run out of breath. I can run about 1/4 mile in a minute and that is kind of where I have to slow down. I'd kind of actually like to at least double that but not sure there is any real point besides because I can and maybe somewhat better shape.
