Birthday Cake is a specific flavor in America. It's the cheap sheet cake your mother picks up from the store while rushing home after a long day at work and doesn't have time to make a good cake.
Sheet cake with that super sweet frosting and super sweet candy roses that makes the kids hang from the ceiling fan and throw the hamster out the window. Good memories!!

Love the pairings. I'd actually watch TV if Dermot and Justine had a sit-com. Even though there's a substantial age difference, they have a "we're married, but we're kind of tired of each other, but we're putting up with each other for the sake of the kids, and so we don't really care what we say to each other anymore..." kind of vibe going on that's really funny.

Out of all the Tryers the only one whose pallet I trust the most is Justine. She has never done me wrong with things I have never tried. She is spot on to my sense of taste.
Lena is a great match with anyone here but she and Paddy are particularly fun.

Traditional store bought Birthday cakes in the US are yellow cake and buttercream or vanilla frosting. The flavor is ubiquitous.

I agree with Dermot about "birthday cake" flavored things.
So, "birthday cake" as a flavor is a kind of cake called "funfetti," which is a white vanilla cake with little chunks of color that somehow seem to make it taste totally different than ordinary white vanilla. It was the most common boxed cake mix used at the birthday parties I went to in the late 80s through the 90s. In my neighborhood, it was a rarity when I was a kid to get even a basic bakery sheet cake for a kid's birthday. It was almost always funfetti, hence Millenials' fondness for the concept as a flavor.
Spot on. Funetti cake mix...and the rainbow chip canned frosting from Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines. Not sure how, maybe the amount of vanilla in it, but it really is different from white or yellow boxed mix...and just so distinct & iconic!

I completely agree with Dermot, birthday cake as a “flavor “ is BS. It’s cop out, like they are sitting around tasting the new flavor trying to decide what it is, and one guy says, well it’s sweet, so it could always be birthday cake. And then they all nod and decide to go with that so they can go home early.

"Birthday Cake" is usually a white or yellow cake flavor with strong hints of vanilla and sugar (duh) even if most people choose chocolate or other types of cake for their actual birthday. It's an easy way to say "ehh... it's vaguely vanilla/sugar like fancy candles"
technically it usually references a specific cake mix called "funfetti" that has splotches of color in the batter; i personally never had it but i saw it on the shelves growing up in the 80s and 90s

I have had such an amazing crush on Justine for so long. She is so brilliant and intelligent and funny and seems to have a good heart. That was until she mentioned putting all of those flavored popcorn in one bowl. I get mixing flavors but I think she went to far. I mean, I still “fancy” her but now I have concerns.
