I love how your final piece turned out! Such a perfect example of mixing watercolor and pencils. I’ll have to try this technique now too, with my new watercolor skills!
YES! SAAAME! I love to do a wash in watercolor and then colored pencil/Neocolors/pastels/oil paint/etc on top! Or, I'll do the painting mostly in watercolor and then do the focal point of the painting in more detail with another medium! SO MUCH FUN!!😆😆😆😆
Hello Kristi👋 I started my art journey with drawing and sketching using pencil/charcoal. Later I wanted to get into color. Took a watercolor class that was way too loose and scary for me. So I really got into watercolor pencils and learned as I went. Now I’m easing my way back into watercolor and you my friend, are helping me do that! It’s lots of fun and I’m enjoying every minute. Ty🎨👩🏻🎨♥️
Yeah no, I friggin love those color cubes. She just did such a completely amazing job on them! The thought and detail that went into them.....I am SO impressed with Sarah for these!
It's a pity that she established her distribution centre in England. We in Europe pay a lot of taxes for imported goods from outside the EU (I hate the EU) so these cubes cost double when you are in Europe.
The underlying of the watercolor would be my way to go. I find that color pencils are overwhelming for me. I am loving just doing watercolor. You did a great job!
Wow this was a wonderful surprise! I really think that this was a much better mixed media artwork than any of your others. I love 💕 how even though you were uncomfortable with the color pencils, you stuck with it after taking a necessary break to figure out what you needed to do to be successful. Sharing that with us is very inspirational & helpful Thanks 😊 for sharing this with us!
I wouldn't say I found it exciting per se to watch you with a new-to-you medium, but it was interesting to watch you organically discover some of the boundaries of that medium and articulate them. Also those colour cubes are rad as heck.
Your piece was very beautiful! I loved seeing you learn. I came to your channel after watching you teach Sarah how to paint with watercolours. Now you’re stuck with me, because I am loving your channel. You Rock!
I took a color pencil class to learn better light/shadow values! I learned a lot, but the medium stresses me out for anything other than rough travel sketches. I love your work in this video though!! Both flowers were gorgeous.
I've loved this collab so much. I watched Sarah's video a couple of days ago but I didn't know this one was here😢 I think many watercolorists don't enjoy colored pencils because it is such a slow medium, but I thinking mixing both is such a great idea. That second try was so lovely 💜💜💜
I'm not a huuuuge follower of your channel, just discovered watercolours recently but was already a Sarah Renee Clark fan and that's how I stumbled upon your channel. And I must admit I looooove the collaboration and teaching you guys are doing in the recent videos. You teached watercolour techniques (that I can't wait to work on, mastering the basics is important) to Sarah and she taught you some of her techniques and on both sides you've created amazing art! Keep up with the mixed media, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I do.
I love watching your videos and Sarah's. I've been using coloured pencil and watercolour separately so this was perfect to see how I can use them together. And I love love your finished painting/drawing. Thank you for being brave!
Eeeeek your results are fantastic.! I will wait for watercolors but you are great in video and love to watch your techniques and yes! I love Sarah too! The expert with videos, products (love the color cubes) and perfect tips, tricks and great coloring results. All the best to you, smiles for me and thanks.
I have to first master watercolor and acrylics before even looking at a color pencil. I so admire both these ladies for their beautiful artwork. I want to create like that so bad. I get so frustrated and just throw the brush to the side and lay down, cause I'm mad! LOL but then the excitement comes back and I just keep trying.
@@KristyRice Thank you Kristy!! I watch at least two of your videos every single day! I have mastered the leaves!!! Practice really does make a difference!!

I Love it. I haven't worked with watercolor pencils. I have colored pencils some of which might be watercolor pencils just a Yard Sale find. But I dipped them in water to get the color I wanted out of them.
I'm so glad you are going out of your comfort zone!! I have to tell you that your approach to watercolor has me coloring better too. I hope you keep trying pencil techniques to achieve all new heights to your work❤❤❤
It's kinda funny to me to hear you say all the things you're struggling with starting this new medium as these are some of my same struggles when I started with watercolor painting and some I'm still working through!! I guess it just part of the process of learning art in general even when you think someone is just a natural artist in truth we all still have to take the time to learning through watching and practicing!! This is definitely a humble boost in my confidence!! Thanks Kristy for sharing your struggling and remember practice make progress! I know you'll nail it!!

Loved watching the two of you together which brought back some very happy memories, as Sarah was the very person I ever watched on YT one and half years ago on my beginning journey with pencils. Then, a few months after that around last summer, you, Kristy, were the first artist I came across on YT when I wanted to learn about water colour. It’s like coming round in a full circle, and a real coincidence. I did purchase the Colour Cubes last year when they were released, and as you say….even if you are confident and know colours….these colour palettes are just fab !! It’s great to sometimes go the cubes and just randomly choose one to see what comes up and encourages us to work with a new combination we may not have even thought about using. We tend to stay with our favourites generally, so it encourages us to try a new palette of colours that we may not have considered previously. Early on in my art journey, I discovered alcohol markers with the brush nibs and loved them as an under painting to the colouring books, especially the greyscale pages of faces and hair which I enjoyed colouring the most. I then found that using the pencils over the markers made life a whole lot easier….and smoother, as the alcohol markers acted as a key base layer. I could see where the shading needed to be as I already had the beginnings of the picture there. The pencils gave the desired added depth without needing ten million layers of pencils !! I never used hot press paper, but used a heavier weight smooth cardstock, which works best for using alcohol markers. Love your brushes by the way, and the lovely case it came with, too 🥳💕🤗
I love it!! This is my favorite way to work! I mix pencils and watercolor in every painting! Sometimes I use more painting and a little pencil at the end and other times just a little under painting and full on pencil loveliness on top! Plus nothing cheers me up better than a quick coloring page in a book by another wonderful artist! So pencils were how I got into art. They were my gateway into the rest of art and im glad I learned them first since I always thought I couldn't draw or color when I was younger. I didn't know you could learn to color or draw or paint. I thought it was way too hard for me so it took me til I was in my 20s before I really ventured out into trying different techniques and art media like painting. Im so gla0d I did! I loved the video! We all need little refresher courses sometimes especially when they revamp some good old passion!
It took me a bit longer... til I was almost 70 - which I am now. Bought Polychromos 36 set and Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils 36 set... I love watercolor pencils! Thanks for sharing, from a California Gramma ❤️
Wow! Watching 2 favorites learning from each other... also saw Kristy on Sarah's video yesterday! Go for it Kristy!!! With love from a California Gramma ❤️
I love watching artists discover new things. It sort of brings you (the artist) out of "expert" level and puts you in the same place as a beginner so we can learn WITH you as opposed to FROM you.
I loved this video. I started with colored pencil, then went to watercolor, but you helped me remember to bring those cp back into play! You are awesome! ❤
Thank you for being honest with us about your worries etc, for those of us who struggle with anxiety so much that it stops us from doing art, its reassuring to remember its ok to play and experiment and keep trying different things
This was a GREAT demo! Coincidentally, I’ve been using my watercolor pencils to my watercolor work too! I feel like I have more control of the texture and details. I can go in and bring out areas, especially if I’ve done something more loose and atmospheric. Loving the mixed media, go for it Kristi!
You made a BEAUTIFUL piece 😍 personally, I think it is fantastic to see an artist, especially at a high-level like yourself, show your process and show that you are uncomfortable with a medium. It shows to absolutely everyone that, regardless of your skill level in one medium it’s OK to try something new, not be as good with the new medium as you are with the other, have to start over, have to practice, and all the things. Too often has artists or even hobbyists, we think we have to be instantly good in order to have “talent“. It’s refreshing to see a very talented artist, admit to struggling and having to start over and being uncomfortable and scared… It makes you human and allows “regular” people to be able to connect with a professional artist on the same level sort of.
Kristy I love seeing you doing sharing and mark making in colored pencil over watercolor! That's one of my very favorite mixed-media strategies. More please!
I love seeing you uncomfortable❤ I'm in a watercolor pencil class and ended up doing an underpainting with inktense. It works beautifully. The instructor does all colored pencils. Thank you for a fun video. Sarah is lovely. I must get her cubes.
Colour pencil in some ways is like watercolour, you work from light to dark and they are translucent. Because they are translucent you can layer different colours on top of each other to create a new shade of the colour or a new colour altogether.
I think it is great to watch an artist take on things outside of their norm. Color pencils are seriously for the patient artist because it take so long to build up a great, blended look. But man when it’s done right pencils can be amazing. Great first try and I hope you are able to add a little of this to your future pieces.
This video gives me liiiiife!!! Color pencils were my first love but I've drifted so far, and recently I gave colors a try again with some Junior Prismacolors and THE LOVE IS COMING BACK. I don't think watercolor will go to a second place, if any, I'll try to do what you did on this one. But it's been a process I'm actually enjoying!
Beautiful ❤, I think the beauty lies in your inbuilt skill with watercolour and the lovely under painting, which ,with pencil over the top gave it the most gorgeous painterly feel which is hard to get with pencils ( I think anyway ) . 👏👏👏 . I love to do this in my colouring books . What a brilliant video ❤
Wow, first birds, now colour pencils. I am super proud of you. Also any excuse to see art UA-camrs collab ❤❤❤. Good for you. Your second picture came out so beautifully ❤❤❤. Yes, I would absolutely love to see you practice more pencils on watercolour because it is something I would like to do, but do not know how to decide where to put the colours and how much to use when ect. Ironically I can use each medium separately, but combining them, which should be intuitive, seems impossible at the moment. So I am waiting for some Mrs Rice magic to help me learn with you. Thank you for doing this video. I really want to combine these 2 mediums. I also want to combine (and cannot for the same reason) alcohol markers with coloured pencils.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Girl, you nailed it! I love watching you experiment with other mediums with watercolor! Consider trying carandache neocolor IIs some time - I would love to see how you incorporate with WC, too. Thank you!
I loved this video Kristy. Sarah is dear, and I love her channel and her cubes. They are such a fun addition to my art practice. Thanks so much for sharing. My first love is watercolor and I adore colored pencils, but really don't know how to use them. Thanks for sharing!
Hey I come from Sarah's canal, watched a few videos and they are so much fun. You really make me to want to jump into wartercolor again. 💖💖💖Thank you for that.💖💖💖 Sorry my english is not really well 😅
Your final piece was super pretty!! Don’t cut yourself short with colored pencils. Colored pencils are my main medium while I’ve recently gotten into watercolor. Colored pencils are amazing! You have some excellent quality pencils which make a big difference in learning to wield the pencil. Just keep going with small pieces and move on gradually to the more complex pieces. Won’t be long until you laugh at the concept of being scared of the colored pencil! ☺️
I think you did fab with this and love the artwork you created. Thank you for this and showing us your struggles and your thought processes and then how to overcome them 🫶🏾
I love what you did with the second one. Did the blender pen lift up any of the watercolor? I think you maybe should try a series of these. The color card you chose is a really nice one, too.
I love your video's and art materials you've created, like your water color palette and brushes and I love the video's of @SarahRenaeClark and her color cubes. Soon I will order all of it. Thank you for sharing both your journeys. 🥰
What colored pencils ended up being your favorite? What about Renee’s favorite? I like Prismacolor and Inktense so far one for the smooth texture and one for the deep color!! Thanks so much for this video one of the best colored pencil video’s I have seen!
I started with watercolor pencils, because they took up less space. I was still using my bottom shelf in my walk in closet. I was a closet creator of bad art. The blending pencil is a game changer. You can mix not only 2 colors, but if you get the dreaded lines the blending pencil will help as will tiny circles. Colored pencils are great for color books, but I really think I’m starting to love watercolors.
Had to try this myself. Well it makes great dots of color, and on wet it left almost a dry brush impression behind. This was my second try too. I wanted to find a use for water pens and I could pair this for on the go sketching maybe.
Oh wow!! I so loved this especially since my sweet hubby bought me colored pencils for my birthday!! just started a drawing and even though I'm not loving it I still am learning so much!! You mentioned a water color sharpener and I had never heard of this also not to sound ignorant but what is the sandpaper stick thing for that you get with penci! Kits? Is that to sharpen?
I love how your final piece turned out! Such a perfect example of mixing watercolor and pencils. I’ll have to try this technique now too, with my new watercolor skills!
Thank youuuuu!!! This was so fun!! And not too scary lol!!!
It's a great idea the collaboration of 2 artists giving hints to each other. Also helping overcome your fear of pencils ✏️ is gr8

I hear you!!! Dreaming up some new videos!!
@@KristyRice your the best 💖 . Thank you.
Girl, you nailed it! I love watching you experiment with other mediums with watercolor! Consider trying carandache neocolor IIs some time - I would love to see how you incorporate with WC, too. Thank you!
This was helpful info. I use coloured pencils and watercolour when I plein air sketch. I will try some of these techniques
I loved this video Kristy. Sarah is dear, and I love her channel and her cubes. They are such a fun addition to my art practice. Thanks so much for sharing. My first love is watercolor and I adore colored pencils, but really don't know how to use them. Thanks for sharing!
You bet!!
Fabulous work soooo helpful 💜💕💜🍒
So glad!
It's worked well, it has turned out beautiful.
Thank you!!
Absolutely loving it
Absolutely beautiful! I have done this before but not to this extent.
😘😘
I think you got this girl !😊
Yes, great video. So many of my own questions answered. Thanks
Yes love to see how to fix what we don't like ❤
Love to use watercolor and colored pencils!!!❤ 16:49
I’ve been eyeing those color cubes, they do look really cool on the shelf!😊
Hey
I come from Sarah's canal, watched a few videos and they are so much fun. You really make me to want to jump into wartercolor again. 💖💖💖Thank you for that.💖💖💖
Sorry my english is not really well 😅
Yes jump please!!!!
It looks simply beautiful
Thanks!!
Appreciate you!!
I LOVE IT. Thinking of trying this technique as well. Thank you 🤗
You should!!
I think you did fab with this and love the artwork you created. Thank you for this and showing us your struggles and your thought processes and then how to overcome them 🫶🏾
You bet!
Do more with both mediums
I love what you did with the second one. Did the blender pen lift up any of the watercolor? I think you maybe should try a series of these. The color card you chose is a really nice one, too.
I noticed a slight touch of color on the blending pen tip as I worked but it didn’t impact anything on the page :)
I love your video's and art materials you've created, like your water color palette and brushes and I love the video's of @SarahRenaeClark and her color cubes. Soon I will order all of it. Thank you for sharing both your journeys. 🥰
I love it you did a great shop love mixed Media 💕
Thanks!!
Ms Rice you are so adorable. I love your videos .
Thanks!!
Great job!
Thanks!
What colored pencils ended up being your favorite? What about Renee’s favorite? I like Prismacolor and Inktense so far one for the smooth texture and one for the deep color!! Thanks so much for this video one of the best colored pencil video’s I have seen!
I really enjoyed Sarah’s fave, the Luminance :)
More of you being uncomfortable, ha ha, we love you Kristy, anything new is scary, but press forward, not to hard, sharpen. Hugs! Patti
Great video. Thanks for exploring!
You bet!!
Colored pencils are great for color books, but I really think I’m starting to love watercolors.
yes!
love it
Love it Kristy. I really want to try it
You should!!
This is great Kirsty…. Going to help me enormously 🌟💜🍒
Good!
I wish I knew the answer to that question!
