Now that this problem has been identified as a manufacturing issue do we know that machines currently being sold by Precision Mathews have had this issue resolved? I sent an email to PM asking this question but after 24 hours have not gotten a response.
Yes, this was limited to a small number of machines and all the spindles were replaced. It's unfortunate it happened, but ANY machine can have issues. The most important thing is to buy from a company that has proven that they will resolve issues when they do come up.
@@FunctionalPrintFriday Turned out I forgot one of the "t"'s in the email address so I tried again and they got right back to me. They had a bad batch of spindles and sent replacements to everyone who had an issue. The problem appears to have gone away. Sounds like they are a very proactive company with excellent customer service.
The moral of the story is that you buy the seller, not the machine. I've heard great things about Matt's willingness to fix problems.
I have this mill and am still learning. Thanks.
Yes it's not 3D printing. But, it is related kinda to CNC which is becoming more connected to the 3D printing hobby.
Yes many people are only buying the PM machines just to convert them to a high precision CNC which I plan to do for the PM-25
If you take apart the unit, you will find the bearings are not as precision as one would expect. I replaced all the bearings with higher grade, closer tolerance ones.
Excellent explanation on it. I read someone else had the same issue on a forum on the same model. How much did the spindle test bar cost and where did you buy it? I guess I might need one.
could it be down to unmatched bearings or bearing fitment, the high precision bearings in my old mill have alignment marks
What's the runout on the spindle above the wrench flats?
I just setup a new PM 728 VT and have exact problem.
Do you want to sell R8 test bar?
Saw your email as well. I wrote ya back. Check your junk folder if you don’t see it.
@@FunctionalPrintFridayjust saw this video and it’s great information, thank you for sharing. I have the same machine and I’m pretty sure I have the same exact problem. Now that you’ve solved the spindle collet taper situation, could you kindly let me know what is the run out now with real world usage? I’ve spent the majority of my time trying to tram this machine for the last 3 years. Also is there a Nod on your machine? If so how did you solve that. Greatly appreciate it if you could shed some light in my direction.
On the fence for one, great information?
Lovin it so far. Just do it :)
