Honestly I hear you loud and clear. I got to the end of my tether with the pure greed pricing model, and stupid limited editions packed with cardboard. I took a more digital outlook last year, and took the time to rip most of my movies to a Plex server. Also being able to sail the seven seas, itll look after the wallet. I throughly enjoy the quality of 4K Blu Ray, but do not feel the price makes sense anymore. If I cant find something sailing or digital, ill buy the 4K, rip and sell on.

Excellent decision, well done! There are far too many UA-camrs who unthinkingly collect and re-buy all this tat because it has, for example, a different slipcover or an A4 poster with it. There are also fewer who seem to actually watch anything they buy. It just goes on their shelf in their man-child cave with a load of tired looking Alien or Star Wars figures and Funko Pops. My friend died unexpectedly in December 2023 surrounded by a huge physical media collection in his living room. When his family dealt with his house clearance all of this stuff just became landfill, it couldn't be sold on and nobody wanted it in 2024. So, it's bordering on hoarding and it's perhaps related to mental health issues around constantly harking back to a childhood past that's long gone. Great video AJ 👍 I've rationalised my collecting through space limitations.itation and financial concerns. I was going to pick up House of the Dragon season 2 on 4K as got the First one. But having already seen it on Sky, I ask myself if I did buy it when would I get round to actually watching it - if at all, given the time needed to rewatch such seasons. I'm sorry to hear about your granddaughter. You've had a rough time of it in the past year, fingers crossed for some light at the end of the tunnel. On the issue of materialism. We certainly can't take it with us, but I do try to make the most of what I have. I'm very picky about what I buy. Last year, I bought about 30 titles, some on DVD and a few on Blu-Ray. My problem is more focused on importing films and TV. The cost is outrageous and only getting more expensive as time moves forward. Just before Xmas, I indulged considerably with Imprint. A Bridge Too Far, Let's Get Harry and The Prisoner set. You're looking at over £100 pounds worth of goods. I've got the standard early 00s release of A Bridge Too Far on MGM DVD, which I've had since its release, and the old The Prisoner/Carlton DVD releases, Let's Get Harry was just too tempting, considering the film only had a VHS rental and retail release in the UK, but no DVD or Blu release. I'm not someone who buys five copies of one film. Nor am I someone who just buys a title because others do. I think you have to have a clear need to buy a title, and I try to be specific about what titles I need to pick up. The temptations are everywhere, but being selective and limiting film and TV titles to a narrow field is better. I'm nearing the end of collecting the titles I want. With fewer titles being licensed via boutique labels of archival film and TV, it's becoming apparent that their will be less for me to collect. Paramount and Disney/Fox have all but given up releasing archival films to the UK. So, things are not too great for the UK market. Germany and Australia seem to get everything. There's going to come a day when the pool of licenses shrinks further. Eureka has all but given up releasing archival titles, which pisses me off. It's all about martial arts and nothing else. So I save some money there.
I’ve not mentioned my granddaughter before now because I don’t like bringing that stuff into the channel. I don’t mind when it’s relevant and in the past ( even though she is ongoing with it she’s in a good place - but it’s hard to see ) The same with why I never mentioned my attack when it happened. Now I can reflect upon it and it’s in the past. I remember when it happend. I had bruising all down. One side of my face and I filmed one video that week ( and put up older vids I filmed before ) but in that one vid I sat more face side on so it wasn’t seen 😂
🤣 get my movies mostly free from my pa as her husbands a manger of Birstall recycling centre so i can a pick of movies the older titles that's is only have to buy the most recent films🤔 stopped at blu rays myself🤔
@@ajsmovieplace have you considered going to recycling centres yourself? they might hask for £2 donation and you can have your pick on the shop floor if i go with my pa i can go into the store room were the public can't really go try typing in free you tube movies i have found tons of freebies on here that'll save you money as well want to watch the new Beetlejuice its on here i also have sky cinema so i add things to my play list have paramount plus and discovery plus as part of my package for me being a sky cinema customer for free have Disney plus on my phone bill just a thought? you can kind of try before you buy that way
@ Recycling centres have never crossed my mind at all to be honest. Not something that has been on my radar. It’s very rare that I blind buy physical media now ( but happens on occasion - example Critters Box set ) But even though I don’t subscribe to any streaming sites ( besides the wife having Netflix ) I do have the means of watching films prior to purchase 😉

I really see no point collecting much anymore. There's that fear of missing out, and now there's no point worrying with everything getting re-releases.
I applaud your decision to cancel the holiday for the sake of the dogs. Iv done the same thing and only holiday in the UK for now. Totally agree with your approach to money. I'm the same. If I don't have the funds I don't buy it and try my best to save.
Have to think do I really need this edition ? Do I need another copy of the same movie. Space and more importantly money . Depends on how you feel it’s money well spent
Yeah, i get exactly what you're saying. i think these special editions should be picked up because you love the film. The problem is that the companies have cotton on to this, so producing everything now and we almost become conditioned to picking everything up as special editions, I have to stop this now doubling , tripling up etc needs to stop i can only watch the film once plus with lack of room now im questioning every purchase and will probably have to get rid of some things. I think its curatating the collection now to what you want.
@iansteventon4221 These companies are saying stuff as sold out to drive a need and want for these only for a few weeks or months later for it to be suddenly back in stock. I've noticed in the last year from several companies doing this to create a sense of urgency to buy once it comes back into stock thus driving sales. It's all personal choice what we purchase and how much we buy but I know from my point of view I've reached the limit now so have to make some choices, changes going forward..I certainly don't want to get into hoarding Territory with this hobby. ☝️
@MattVs_Movies yeh mate , there's nothing really special anymore. My lord of the rings and hobbit steelbooks were like treasured by me , they've been re released , and are getting another batch released again. I think I've got 3 films pre ordered (se7en deep blu sea & constantine), then that's my whack as I will wait for sales , just buying for the sake of it and fomo. Like, this guys story , my December haul was a disgrace and the money could have been put to a much better use for the family 2025 change of direction, I refuse to pay £35 for a film in cheap steel .
Also for these companies I’m sure they themselves know the market is dwindling. ( as we know it is ) and so this in turn forces them to rush stuff out as quick as possible to make money. So it’s a flood of releases. And this in turn has them using AI to do the 4Ks and we end up with inferior quality 4Ks.
I have some rules with my collecting because ive gone too far in the past. 1 i dont get too attached to things. 2 i dont do doubles ever. If i want a better edition the old one has to go. 3 dvds and blurays im still in the process of upgrading but im in no rush to. I upgrade the film when im ready to watch it again. 4. I swap 10 films in a month at cex without fail. I make a point to watch as many films as possible. So stuff im not interested in has to go back for something else. 5. I treat cex as blockbusters. The regular editions you can pick up for as little as 50p. If i havent seen a film thats where i pick them up. and if i like it i keep it if not it goes back next time. 6 i only buy expensive collectors editions of films that i definitely live and know i will keep. 7. Purchase within my means. If i cant afford something i cant have it yet. If i miss out i miss out. F*** Fomo. 8. Bills/family/space comes first. Theyre just movies they will always be around. They're a luxury not a necessity.
7 and 8 super important. I do keep within my means and sort out all bills and outgoings the minute I’m paid separating my money ! A good set of rules 👌
Yes by not buying releases on their release date...that is what I do a.j...all of us collectors seem to want everything now when down the road all of this gets cheaper!
I get it and I personally think it's an individual decision. I collect and have done for many years. Differnce Is my situation is vastly different from most. I dont get out much and dont socialize like I did before so for me this is my main form of enjoyment. Like you I have cut down on double dipping unless it's a very special movie. At the end of the day just do what makes you happy.
Yeah I get that Lee. I know your situation and it makes sense. Me myself I don’t socialise much either but that’s by choice as I’m a miserable git and would rather stay home. It certainly is an individual decision. But is it possibly something we all face at some point. Would I have thought 2/3 years ago I would be here thinking and feeling this now ? Life is a journey and as it progresses out attitudes outlooks and priorities change. Is this mid life crisis time ? Or has the last year been so crap it’s put things in perspective ? ( rhetorical questions of course )
As you know from my previous comments I do agree to an extent and think I've been overspending but I will say in disagreement; the main one is that I'd rather have a room dedicated to physical media rather than a guest room, which, to me is just a waste of space getting used once a year if that (luckily I have 2 guest rooms so that might be part of my thought process I confess... I have *never* needed 2 spare rooms at one time). And a minor point which we just have differing thoughts on; I'm furious I missed the *Nosferatu* 4K steelbook before it sold out within 24-48 hours, because I didn't read all my emails over Christmas. It's one I won't get to see at the cinema and _really_ wanted... but, yep, definitely a 'first world problem' for me and I don't diagree with your _stance_ !
I agree with you on the space being better used by physical media as it gets more use. I think it’s more what the room represents in the grand scheme of things - it’s a reflection of Money spent across decades. Not just by what is physically in the room but of Ghosts of the past so so speak ( VHS. Laserdisc. DVD era ) I think I am very very lucky ( as anyone is ) who has a partner willing to allow the space to be utilised like that for this reason in a shared house. ( we do have another small guest room ). Its not like she has a hobby room ( unless you count the Kitchen ☝️😂)
Surely you will have just about every film you need now ( as I do ) of the few new films that will be out in 2025 , I'm OK waiting for a sale. These prices are a disgrace now ( £35 is the new norm for a 4k steelbook! ) Sorry to hear about that scumbag, uk in general is lost and unrecognisable from the country I enjoyed as a kid ( bmx , footy and the fonz !)
The good old BMX days 😂. So much has been lost hasn’t it ? But you’re correct. I do pretty much have every back catalogue title I want ( every now and then something comes about - case in point GI Jane that I grabbed the other week ) But it’s the upgrades and special collectors editions of these titles that draw a lot of us in to respect ( me included ) and whilst there are a few I would upgrade ( arrows upcoming Deep Blue Sea ) a lot I will question and hopefully ignore.
@ajsmovieplace mate , when I watched your video it could have been me behind the camera. 2025 is the year I remove myself from fomo. My wife spoiled me this Xmas with a new expensive subwoofer, and when all my pre orders arrived I felt absolutely terrible. That money could have been used to spoil her with a nice break away. Pretty selfish and I'm changing my ways . All the best 👍
As much as I love you buying stuff because it feels like my collection vicariously, you need to curate carefully rather than collect. More away from the arbitrary purchases, to key purchases. What do I know?! 😊

I don’t mind when it’s relevant and in the past ( even though she is ongoing with it she’s in a good place - but it’s hard to see )
The same with why I never mentioned my attack when it happened. Now I can reflect upon it and it’s in the past.
I remember when it happend. I had bruising all down. One side of my face and I filmed one video that week ( and put up older vids I filmed before ) but in that one vid I sat more face side on so it wasn’t seen 😂
@ajsmovieplace What a carry-on. As Forrest Gump said...Life is like a box chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get....
🤣 get my movies mostly free from my pa as her husbands a manger of Birstall recycling centre so i can a pick of movies the older titles that's is only have to buy the most recent films🤔 stopped at blu rays myself🤔
It’s not what you know it’s who you know 😉👍
@@ajsmovieplace have you considered going to recycling centres yourself? they might hask for £2 donation and you can have your pick on the shop floor if i go with my pa i can go into the store room were the public can't really go try typing in free you tube movies i have found tons of freebies on here that'll save you money as well want to watch the new Beetlejuice its on here i also have sky cinema so i add things to my play list have paramount plus and discovery plus as part of my package for me being a sky cinema customer for free have Disney plus on my phone bill just a thought? you can kind of try before you buy that way
@ Recycling centres have never crossed my mind at all to be honest. Not something that has been on my radar.
It’s very rare that I blind buy physical media now ( but happens on occasion - example Critters Box set )
But even though I don’t subscribe to any streaming sites ( besides the wife having Netflix ) I do have the means of watching films prior to purchase 😉
@@ajsmovieplace 🤗the one were my pas husbands a manger has up to 9000 tiles at any time after 6 month if there's no taker they chuck them in a big waste bin at his centre i have go factory sealed brand new with the rapping on blu rays as well as DVDs🤔 her husbands in charge that's why i can go to the store room not normally open to the public🤗
@ that’s great 👌. But a travesty it’s all going to waste. But that is the future for it
I really see no point collecting much anymore. There's that fear of missing out, and now there's no point worrying with everything getting re-releases.
You have collect a lot pretty fast.
Do you ever feel a burnout with that ?
Also. Do you ever get burnt by the blind buys ?
I applaud your decision to cancel the holiday for the sake of the dogs. Iv done the same thing and only holiday in the UK for now. Totally agree with your approach to money. I'm the same. If I don't have the funds I don't buy it and try my best to save.
I couldn’t imagine the abandonment feelings they would feel just for the sake of me selfishly leaving them behind to go away.
So Iceland can wait 👌
Have to think do I really need this edition ? Do I need another copy of the same movie. Space and more importantly money . Depends on how you feel it’s money well spent
100% Jimmy.
Well said mate , definitely cutting down on the spend this year, very rare anything ever sell out so patience will save a few bob.
Like, this guys story , my December haul was a disgrace and the money could have been put to a much better use for the family
2025 change of direction, I refuse to pay £35 for a film in cheap steel .
This is true
Yeah. Especially blurays. They themselves depreciate pretty quickly now !
Laserdisc. DVD era )
I think I am very very lucky ( as anyone is ) who has a partner willing to allow the space to be utilised like that for this reason in a shared house. ( we do have another small guest room ). Its not like she has a hobby room ( unless you count the Kitchen ☝️😂)
@blujustin4175 it will get released again, don't worry about that.
Surely you will have just about every film you need now ( as I do ) of the few new films that will be out in 2025 , I'm OK waiting for a sale. These prices are a disgrace now ( £35 is the new norm for a 4k steelbook! )
Sorry to hear about that scumbag, uk in general is lost and unrecognisable from the country I enjoyed as a kid ( bmx , footy and the fonz !)
The good old BMX days 😂. So much has been lost hasn’t it ?
But you’re correct. I do pretty much have every back catalogue title I want ( every now and then something comes about - case in point GI Jane that I grabbed the other week )
But it’s the upgrades and special collectors editions of these titles that draw a lot of us in to respect ( me included ) and whilst there are a few I would upgrade ( arrows upcoming Deep Blue Sea ) a lot I will question and hopefully ignore.
Sense is what you know ☝️
@@ajsmovieplace I watch films and tv shows but only own two black adder DVDs, one bottom special dvd, hereditary, and recently got nightmare on elm street on DVD. All second hand. Also, have muppets Christmas Carol and national lampoons Christmas vacation for Christmas! Lol....but my knowledge of films a d popular culture is vast....purely from watching....not collecting ☺️
Just a word on this I'm giving my monthly spend a limit ..... Then the rest saved . Hopefully it will work
Trouble is it means only one purchase a month 😢😢and then there's the vaults, where's wave 3 and will they cost more now it's proved to be a massive success?😮
Oh yeah. I forgot Vaults are on the horizon. Fingers crossed they are nothing I want to upgrade 😂
Have you seen the £10 notes being released by zavvi it has art cards, and a poster 😂 collecting money sounds a good plan to me. 👍🏻
I have indeed. They cost £25 😂
@ajsmovieplace 😂 probably plus postage
well you have me thinking i had violent night bluray then 4k and megan and lord of the rings the money i spent on that set i want to pick better blind buys i love blakes 7 but will the bbc do the rest talking about se i got once upon a time in the west got cards 34 pound stand alone 4k 22 pound best of luck for this year
I got the violent night and Megan sets also. What bothered me about those is there was no 4K option and either release. And the cynical
Side of me says it was planned to pilfer our pockets. The release of the 4Ks were not far after the initial
Releases.
Blake’s 7. That’s what’s holding me back - will
We get the rest ? If no I’d rather Not pick up this initial release.
I thought about saving but then thought you are only gunna die in the end anyway and you can't take that money to the grave with you
That is very true.
But having that money there means I may be able to help a few people along the way and after I shuffle off this mortal coil
4 copy's of barbie
Exactly 🤷🏻♂️
