What a legendary Subaru!!! I saw one about a week ago. It was in mint shape. I didn't know the spare tire was kept under the hood!! That's really hot!! No pun intended lol lol lol Thanks for the upload Tommy!!!
There's only two things similar. They're both station wagons, they both are awd, they both have four tires, they're both painted, they both use gas, they both have steering wheel, they both have brakes on all four corners, they both are Subarus, they both have tail lights, they both have headlights and so on and so forth
Ha ha. My parents had a Subaru DL 1300, FWD. I remember the spare under the hood. No AC, manual windows, manual transmission. The CV joint was going bad very quickly.
190k miles on my 13 Subaru outback 2.5 loaded not a single issue and changing spark plugs only took 20-25 mins very simple 29.5 mpg I will definitely get another for sure. And regardless of people's complaints I love the Cvt off road your never hunting for gears. My only complaint is the same for my prius no temp gauge really manufacturers this has became ok.
Did yours actually have A/C and it's broken, or was it just ready to have it installed? My '83 had the controls for A/C, but you had to pay extra and have it installed by the dealer if you wanted it.
With the new Subaru Outback, does it come with Birkenstocks and a best friend that you keep brining to family Christmas untill the family asks questions? Asking for a friend.
I don't like how Subaru got rid of the gas struts under the hood, but I will say that because they went with a prop, I'm glad it's compact and off to the side rather than right out in front like a lot of others. My old 2000 Ford focus had the prop off to the side and it made it much easier to get around things.
Subaru made several improvements only 2 years later in 1980. Might see if you can get ahold of a 1980-1984. “Inexpensive and built to stay that way” (Subaru motto back then). :-)
You dont have ac in that wagon.. All the panels say ac but it was an option.. You would have extra vents on both sides and no space shelf under your glove box.. Thats where ac components would be plus you would have ac compressor near your alternater and ac hoses in your engine bay...
No frameless doors on the Outback any more, rollover safety legislation killed them I expect. A friend of mine had a 4WD Subaru pickup back in the day, I liked the frameless doors it had.
I swear that roof rack on the DL is just a scaled down version of the one that was on my '81 Ford station wagon I had until last year. My daily driver for the last six years is an '02 Outback limited and though it doesn't have a manual trans it does have a real automatic trans instead of the junk CVT, nor does it have all the bells & whistles of the new one but is more comfortable than the DL I imagine. And it will drive right through some nasty mud & sand - don't know about snow, I live in Florida, but I think I've got that covered too.
I also like the old one better! Subaru's back then were unique and groundbreaking. Quirky little cars that in my opinion looked Awesome! Still good cars today, but not groundbreaking or unique anymore. And thats sad.
See if the old man still has any mojo. Get him a tyedye shirt. Cut-off shorts and old Burkenstoks. Send him to the hill in Boulder and see if he can pick up a hippie chick of any age with the vintage ride. If he needs help, stand by with a dime bag of chem dog, a Grateful Dead sticker and if all else fails, a puppy for the front seat. My money says he will need the puppy! :)
The TFLclassics I was looking for, thank you Tommy 🙂. I was wondering about TFL's 1978 Subie. Is there going to be an update on classics of your Mini Cooper or 1982 Benz Tommy?

No, because the oil drains out when the engine is off. And it has a lip around it to catch any drips. This setup is way nicer than having it sideways like most engines have.

I'm with ya .. the old one has a good vibe to it . Personality..
I’ll take the one without a CVT
It's a huge downsize of the new subaru's, fortunately they have "fake gears" so you hardly can tell it's a CVT. just feels very smooth

For some reason this channel ignores the 6MT Crosstrek in every single subaru video.
