My family camped every summer without fail and my parents were experts at packing and organizing for camping trips. Long years of practice in Boy Scouts by my parents was very helpful for us to be more efficient. Mom, dad, grandma and 4 kids in a Pontiac Tempest station wagon and we explored our beautiful country from Glacier park to Death Valley. Those are some of my most treasured memories of my childhood. Camping is a lifetime memory worth all the hassle of getting out of the door and finding a great spot to pitch your tent.

We did the same; road trips in a Pontiac station wagon, and everyone had their job setting up and breaking down camp. We cooked all our own (favorite) food, hiked, fished, and saw the USA from East to West on a very small budget. Food always tastes better when you're camping, and the memories are forever. It's definitely worth all the work.

I had a single parent, Dad & with 4 kids he opted for a motorhome (in the 60s & 70s). We went all over the country & by 10 I knew every inch of our big beautiful State. Many great trips.

Three attempts to get away from the house is just about standard. And as you do this you'll find out what you use and what never makes it out of the box.... First trip out camping with the family I was 6 weeks old. I'm 70 now. It's a great thing to do with family and a wonderful way to relax.

Boy does this back family memories!. We had a little Higgins pop up trailer and one year we went to Yellowstone park 1959, year of the great quake. We were safely back in Oklahoma when it happened by one week. The funny thing we saw no bears, deer etc. The animals knew what was coming and got out of Yellowstone before the quake. But we had a blast! Glad you enjoyed the trip

You remind me of the time I, from PA, traveled to Niagara Falls with a family of friends in Buffalo, NY. After supper one evening, we drove to the Falls, but it was turned OFF!!! Turns out some engineers were studying the strength of the rock IF all the fallen rubble was removed as they wanted to do. The result is it wasn't! The rubble was protecting the wall of rock from collapsing. So, my one chance to see the Falls in all its glory was a fail. HOWEVER, I 'did' get to see the Falls without the water and saw the rubble people didn't know was there due to the water cascading over it! It was an education...just not the one I went to see. : ) I have come to learn, subsequently, that the Falls are used to generate power for the area, but at night the flow is greatly reduced.

I loved camping! We upgraded from a 3man tent to a Starcraft popup camper that comfortably slept 6 adults. We packed like y'all did. Every thing revolved around being comfortable well fed and having happy and entertained children.
I lived in Las Vegas in those days. Even in the mountains around us it was pretty hot.
Not much is too cold when it comes to kids wanting to have fun. We did loads of camping at Lake Mead and in secluded places along the Colorado River.
I have upgraded to hostels and cheap motels nowadaze.
Coming home was a challenge some times and we Always looked forward to the next camping trip.
Hopefully y'all will love this trip enough to do it again and again

My history with camping is similar to traveling....make a list for about a week or so, imagining everything I use thru my day, and pack the list. However, the more I did both, I learned to treat myself to hauling less, and then less making only the essentials to take along. So much easier on mind and tending after. Your family time out in God's world looked so fun. Hope there will be many many more...! : )

Grew up camping and taking the state park free courses. Best thing I learned from my parents about camping was, don't touch the sides of the tent, especially during rain. It will cause it to leak. Looks like you guys had fun.

a good idea is to find the baby bumper that go around a crib . put ribbon on each side of the padded bumper to tie down on the seats of the picnic table. if it is plastic style will take some sprinkles and a soft seat, and not slivers, or moss on your clothes.

That went well. Now with more perspective, you can plan the next one - maybe before it turns too cold. Fewer others would be jamming up the campgrounds & maybe you could pick a site based upon a desired destination with great hikes, better swimming, maybe on a lake. Just remembered the pretty fall colors bring people out for road trips. Oh well, there's always winter camping.
Re: your beef stew, next time, prepare it at home, brown the meat for better broth & make enough for everyone. The others could have it with veggies like potatoes, carrots, onion, celery, & maybe mushrooms cooked in the broth. It could be reheated & kept below boiling, which could toughen meats. Keep some without all those lovely flavors if carnivore diet has no exceptions.
Oven roast lots of chicken to have in sandwiches; with some reheated in a pan with pre-made pan gravy, mashed potato, green beans, Brussels sprouts or Butternut squash & home made stuffing or corn on the cob.
I'd want some locally grown corn on the cob - steamed or grilled in their husks or removed & browned directly on a grill. Lots of butter - of course, maybe with steamers, lobsters, baked Cod or Haddock.
Bring a home made soup with lots of veggies & add pre-cooked chicken. Bring bags of cooked pasta to add to salads, soup or baked in a made at home cheese sauce.
It's easy to reheat baked casseroles like lasagna, tuna noodle, or mac & cheese.
Another easy skillet meal - saute onion, peppers, mushrooms & set aside. Cook up a skillet of hamburger at home & add canned tomatoes in sauce. Simmer all together in a big pot & add precooked bag of elbow macaroni maybe.Bring grated cheese, bread & butter.
You must have lots of home grown Lamb or Pork chops on hand, which could be grilled over hot coals on a large, rectangular grill or grate, plus roasted veggies. Reheat home baked potatoes.
Bring lots of prepared salad, carrot sticks, celery stalks, cucumbers to cut fresh, maybe dips or cream cheese.
For breakfast: Oatmeal with raisins, cinnamon, maple syrup; organic mixed cold cereals, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, coconut milk.
A favorite of mine, pre-made, room temp or reheated frittata, containing favorite veggies & cheeses, maybe cubed ham. Have plenty of precooked bacon, maybe lightly grill some ham steaks.
BLTs are good any time; chicken or tuna salad are great on toast, or salad. Open face toast with melted cheese, tomato & pre-cooked bacon.
Many pre-cooked things could be reheated on the grill, wrapped in foil - like you n made, while toast, English muffins or bagels are being toasted on the side.
You could use a 12 v fridge/ freezer that RV & van life people use! It's more to carry but can hold the meats, cheezes, frittata, pre-made casserole fillings, etc.
Good thing that your family aren't addicted to carbonated drinks! That would really take up a lot of space - for 7 people - each of whom could end up used to drinking several per day, like I drink black & herbal tea.
To save on weight & space, use powdered milk. My favorite is coconut. Nice to add to fruit smoothies.
Now I want to go camping too, & I'm 76!

Glad you guys had a wonderful first family camping trip! Pro tip for making tortilla chips. They always will appear slightly lighter when in the oil, than they will be when you take them out and they dry. So take them out just before they get as dark as you'd like them. Helps a lot more with white corn tortilla chips, but also relevant for the yellow.

With everyone pitching in your set up, clean up, and obligatory dishes and cooking went very well. Looks like everyone, except Teddy, had a great time! So organized with your kitchen prep, hand washing, and dishes area! Loved the giggles and laughter at the lard fire, excellent lesson learned and no pork rinds were injured! I like grilled ham and cheese with tomato and red onion, but the cheese has to be cheddar. Even Lily was helping chop wood into kindling!! Glad you all had a great time! I have a master list, in three colors. Green is the stuff that remains in the camping kit always, and is stored together for easy packing. Blue is the stuff we use every day that needs to be added in. Red is the stuff we have to get/make each time (food, etc). It works. I print the list out and if we think of anything else, we write it on the list, and maybe add it to the list permanently for next time. I pack and check each item.

When you do a stew all you need is one cup of water. You cook in the oven at 300 °C for around 4 hours always with the lid on. Your meat will become extremely tender because since there is less water, there is more steam. Water boils at 100°C. While steam is 190°C. That's why meat becomes more tender because steam is much hotter than boiling water.

Ah camping……most of your time is spent setting up camp, cooking and cleaning up but it’s so much more relaxing than doing the same things at home! Glad you guys had a good time and now that you have some experience, improve on that for the next family camp out! My husband and I used to camp a lot and most went in September because the parks were not a crowded.

That’s why I quit camping. I spent the entire time cooking and washing dishes. Sweeping dirt out of stuff. I relaxed more at home.

Can not tell you how awesome it was to see your family go camping. Something you should do a lot. Maybe spring/summer months. 😉 Had fun watching and joy on kids faces was great.

Make sure y’all set your tent up when you get home to dry it out. Mold will destroy it. I learned the hard way.
