When I bought the Sega Genesis back in 1991 it came with Altered Beast and Tommy Lasorda Baseball in a game bundle. Later on I got Golden Axe and ESWAT. Everybody had Super Nintendo back then and most of my friends went home to play the Genesis.
I was 13 years old (late 80's era) when a new pool hall opened up called "The Jungle". The folks running it was major G'n'R fans, hence the name. The place use to be a Huck's convenient store so it wasn't a really big place but a decently good size. It was also close to my school so me and my friends would ride our bikes there after we got out. The first thing I saw when walking into the place was Altered Beast among twelve other coin-ops. They also had a Sea Witch pinball machine that I played the daylights out of. Anyways, me and my friend Mike played Altered Beast every time we went there. About two years later, I discovered the Sega Genesis (it had been out for a year already without me knowing) and it had Altered Beast as a pack in game. I remember mowing lawns and doing all kinds of odd jobs that summer and fall to save up enough money to buy it. I got it in November and played it constantly. That Christmas, my dad got me Revenge of Shinobi and that turned out to be my all time favorite game. Anyways, just a really fond memory I have that I just wanted to share. :)
I remember a kid on the bus saying he was going to play it when he got home on his Genesis. I was envious as my most modern game console at the time was the NES. It took me a while but I got the Genesis. Most of my friends had the SNES. I have no regrets.
Another great video! I remember going to duck creek mall, heading to shoe carnival and they had one of these in the back. Was one of my favorite games.
PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries no, no arcade. They might’ve had two games, but I believe it was just the one altered beast machine in the back. I was into shoes as a kid, but whenever we went there I’d take just a minute or two to look at shoes, then id head to the back and play as many games as Moms change would allow.
In an alternate dimension your doppelganger walks into a car dealership and hands the dealer pillow cases full of quarters, ...leaves the car dealership with car but empty in his soul, as if he was missing something in his life. You made the right decision.
Saved up and bought a Genesis just so I could play this game at home. They had it at an arcade that had a backroom full of older less popular games and I was blown away by the voicing and shapeshifting the beast offered. Just had to have it at home.
I played this on the Genesis. I liked how the power-ups and attack modes changed with each level. You weren't able to develop one strategy that worked for the entire game, you had to adjust your strategies for each level. 11:10 I counted 8 colors on screen... 🤔
Thank you for this video! I loved it! Altered Beast holds a special place in my gamer heart. I played at my best friends house as a kid and as soon as I could get it for myself I was addicted to it. I still play it but mostly on my switch. Great work.
I love the transformations at the end, especially the eagle one which I wish modern movies or shows would explore. We've seen so many wolf kinds but other animals would be unique. Thanks for this childhood memory. Had no idea there were other versions beside Sega.
I always loved the transformations as well as that is what drew me to this game in the first place. Thank you for watching the video glad you enjoyed it :-)
Can you believe that, back in the day, we kids were actually trusted to walk to a school bus stop and wait on the bus, and the big bad pedophile monster didn’t get us. Well anyway, our stop was in front of a convenience store/laundromat and guess what game the laundromat had among others… We missed the bus and had to walk the 3 miles to school, so many times because we just had to get through the game one more time. Those were the days.
That werewolf howl really sounds like the Howl from the Movie an American werewolf in london...but this game first came with the Sega Genesis console when we bought it when I was a kid..keep up the Good videos PatmaQC (y)
It is from American werewolf. I just re-watched that movie a couple of weeks after I did the video and noticed it. Wish I would have known it before because I would've included it. Thanks for the nice words
I remember being tremendously drawn to this game as a kid, mostly because those arcade graphics were ahead of the other arcade games of the time, and the whole setting was - and is - very attractive to me. Funnily enough, I just happen to love the NES version, even though it has all those shortcomings. I enjoyed the extra stages - they were not just recycled sprites and backgrounds - as well as the extra beasts you could play with. I specially loved the shark and the stage boss of the sea stage, that gigantic octopus. It was so awesome! To top it off, it even has a very cool animated ending, which includes Zeus himself! How cool is that? Nice video, thanks for the info!
I love this game. Remember playing it back in the 80's arcade growing up. I love the fantasy genre. The best arcade version I've played is on the Xbox 360. The game only costs $4.99 on the Xbox Live Store. Thanx for the video!
I'm a fan of your channel and I love video games. Any chance of doing a History of Space Ace, Dragon's Lair 2: Time Warp, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Doom - Doom 2 - Doom 64, etc, Dark Souls 1 & 2, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, Command & Conquer: Kane's Wrath, Dead Space 1-3, all the Street Fighter games, Conan game for Xbox 360, Halo game series, Rampart, Gauntlet 1-2, Killer Instinct, etc? I love fantasy and science fiction! Please keep the reviews and videos coming! Thanx!
M2 used the Mega Drive/Genesis version for the 3DS conversion because the original arcade had a single flat background. The Mega Drive / Genesis actually added parallax scrolling to the background, which could be converted to 3D. Cool interview backed up here web.archive.org/web/20170609171039/blogs.sega.com/2013/12/05/sega-3d-classics---3d-altered-beast-interview-with-developer-m2/
As a young child this game terrified me and even today I'm impressed by the creativity in enemy design. I mean, a carniverous beanbag chair that can leap 18 feet into the air? What mind comes up with this stuff?!
Still love this game to bits. Only have the Mega Drive version of this but still. The mega drive version isn’t as good looking so for almost 30 years i thought the two headed wolves were two headed pigs. A few years ago i played this in the arcade in Japan and they are so clearly wolves :)
Couldn't imagine being a kid playing this in the arcade then getting a home version and u put in the MSX version . No kid should have to endure that. Thank God I had a NES first.
My own streamlined lore of Altered Beast, based on the lore from Western and Japanese releases: A long time ago, a race of people who could use the powers of animals and even be able to transform into ones conquered the world. Unsatisfied, their leaders wanted to overthrow the Olympians as the new gods, which was what angered Zeus, also known by the Romans as Jupiter, and the other gods. Some of the beast men disagreed, which could also be something normal that could happen among other races who disagreed with each other over serious points, so the civil wars among the beast men happened. Having enough of the beast men's affairs that became worse, Zeus released fogs that paralysed the beast men that rebelled against the Olympians, but he spared those who disagreed with their unjust fellow beast men and faithfully sided with him. The evil beast men were defeated. Some of them were killed, while others were sealed inside tombstones. The good, pure-hearted, and unselfish beast men then lived and bred with normal humans while hiding their powers. Over time, they slowly lost their true powers, but their pride as fellow normal humans, their faith, and their gratitude for Zeus and the Olympians could never perish. Some of them migrated to Rome, a country that the brothers that the wolves raised as their adoptive children founded, and one of their descendants became a centurion. Proud, noble, courageous, strong, pure-hearted, selfless, wise, loving, and just, he had fought so many battles and then died a good death for what was right for his country and his people, including his loved ones and even those who were too weak and afraid to save themselves. He then entered the underworld, where there were so many demons who fought against and defeated Hades, or Pluto to the Romans, the god of the underworld. Some of the demons turned out to be the souls of the beast men who wanted revenge on the Olympians. The evil beast men had gathered and provoked the inhabitants of the underworld to fight and destroy the Olympians, starting with Hades. Athena, also known as Minerva, offered herself to lead an army to fight the demons, the evil beast men, and free the underworld and Hades. However, the leader of the demons and evil beast men, Neff, overcame and defeated Athena and her few soldiers who survived. Neff stripped Athena of her powers, turned her into a dove, and caged her, while her remaining soldiers were tortured, enslaved, and even turned into fellow demons. Neff was the most powerful of the beast men, who were gifted with formidable transformation spells and energy-absorbing spells that could allow him to depower Athena and Hades or even steal their powers from them. The soul of the centurion was trying to stop and fight Neff and his demons due to his own fears that Neff would also lead his armies on a rampage over the people who were the centurion's friends and families, but he was still powerless, and even the dead could also suffer to near death at the hands of the vilests of the demons. Neff then opened a portal to enter the mortal realm and began his quest to march towards the Olympians, and even the mortals who had nothing to do with Neff and his demons had to suffer and die in the process, for Neff would never let anyone stand in his own ways again. In his weakened state, at the bottom of the underworld, he pleaded for help from the Olympians, including Zeus or Jupiter, to defeat Neff and save humanity. Zeus heard the centurion's pleas and took pity on him. Zeus then commanded the warrior to enter one of the beast men's bodies that were sealed inside tombstones that Zeus created to seal them, for the beast men were also the centurion's ancestors, who were capable of nearly surpassing gods. Once inhabiting the body of a beast man, the centurion would gain the strength, speed, wisdom, senses, and stamina of one, but without the powers to unlock the beast man's true potential abilities because the body was still weaker after Zeus ressurected the centurion. The centurion fought demons who were roaming on every side of the mortal realm, and he found out that he could also absorb their life forces without becoming one demon whom the other demons corrupted with their evil emotions due to his pure heart and one of Zeus's powerful spells that was installed on the centurion and protected him. The more demons he fought, the more their life forces he gained from them without being corrupted, making it even more possible for him to become the true beast man with all of the true potential powers at their fullest. The centurion, as the true beast man with the form of a wolf, the exact animal that raised Romulus and Remus as her own, fought and defeated all of the demons who were invading the mortal realm, and he was close to defeating Neff, but the evil leader escaped and stole all of the powers from the centurion, which was a very critical situation for the centurion to chase Neff as a normal beast man from the start again. And so, the centurion journeyed through the levels of the underworld from above the earth to the bottom, fought so many demons, gained more powers, gained different forms of beast men, used all of his forms' powers to destroy any obstacles, and then fought all of Neff's incarnations, until the centurion finally found the final level of the underworld, fought the goat men and the other demons, gained more powers that made him the more powerful version of his wolf form, used all of his powers to eliminate any obstacles, and then defeated Neff, who gained the form and powers of a Rhinoceros. Despite Neff being a beast man who gained the form and powers of a rhinoceros, in the end, the evil master became nothing to the centurion's overwhelmingly pure and strong spirit, will, love, faith, integrity, courage, interest, and determination to never give up and never lose himself in defeating evil and saving everything good. The centurion forced the weakened Neff to find wherever Athena and Hades were imprisoned at their weakest. The centurion then demanded that Neff let the centurion take the powers of Athena and Hades that Neff had already stolen. The centurion could have used all of the powers of Athena and Hades for himself to surpass and overthrow the Olympians. However, because he was so tired of everything evil that plagued everything, even his life and his home realm, he decided that he would never become any of them, no matter what, so that the same mistakes could never be repeated over and over again. He then gave all of the powers of Athena and Hades back to their original owners. Hades regained his place as the god of the underworld, and he, along with Zeus, punished Neff, the demons, and the evil beast men for eternity. Athena, free from her dove form and her cage, thanked and blessed the man who freed her. The centurion, still in the form of a golden wolf, humbly admitted to Athena that he was just a normal man who wanted to do the right thing-not a god, not a demon, and not even a beast man. However, Athena didn't want to see the centurion for his appearance or his powers. She just wanted to see him for his heart, wisdom, and will. She even declared that, whether it was a mortal, a demon, a god, or a beast man, for a heart like the centurion had, she would also be glad to love that person. And so it was, the legend of the centurion, the greatest of his kind, the altered beast. Or so it was. Three strange creatures-not beast men, but almost looked like ones, but smaller-the first one was a blue hedgehog, the second was an orange fox with two tails, and the third was a red creature with long hair and two gloves that had two short horns on each of their knuckles-came to the centurion and Athena through a strange ring portal, inviting him to fight with them in a tournament that determines the fates of the multiverse. In that tournament, there would also be two plumbers from Italian-American descent, a princess from a kingdom, an evil monster who wanted to kidnap a princess, young warriors from unknown lands, a hunter from outer space, a captain who can destroy anything with his punches, a soldier who can hide himself from anything or attack from his own hiding spots, a young male angel, a gorilla, a smaller gorilla, a yellow little rodent that can spark lightning from its body, a boxer, martial artists from some countries around the world, a vampire hunter, a mercenary with a giant sword, a witch with guns, a robot that can shoot from his arm, a cruel fighter who wanted to throw anyone into the depths of hell, and many, many, many more. It would be up to the centurion to give his own answer to those three creatures and change everything around him.
Loved this video and game. Played it in the arcade and with retro gaming being so popular, an updated version packaged with the original is long overdue.
Altered Beast is an old Sega classic. It's always been one of my favorite games and was the first genesis games I ever played in Sears. It along with Segas other arcade classics made the Genesis the console to own in it's early years.
Be sure use the code to beast select. (Beast Select Hold A + B + C + Down/Left and then press Start) It adds alot of replay value to the game. You can make it a total cakewalk by picking the 5 dragon all 5 levels, or make it extra hard by selecting beast that are terrible match ups for the bosses like the Wolf against the Second boss. You can just randomly pick forms making each playthru radically different. I didn't realize that code existed til much later when I was playing a collection of classic on my dreamcast in the early 2000s.
Amazing video! Here in Brazil the arcade version was very rare, the sega genesis, here called megadrive was most widely popular, I remeber the first time I saw this game was an mindblow experience, thx

Is that some fresh PatmanQC? HOOK IT INTO MY VEINS! oooh yeah that's good nostalgia!
LOL, thank you very much
I think your video is pretty cool and very educational on Ultra beasts and never knew they made all those different ports thanks again
The single reason I bought a sega genesis
Alpha Same. This and Shinobi were must haves.
AbsolutelyAgree 100%
My Genesis came with the game so I was covered :-)
Also Golden Axe
I remember a kid on the bus saying he was going to play it when he got home on his Genesis. I was envious as my most modern game console at the time was the NES. It took me a while but I got the Genesis. Most of my friends had the SNES. I have no regrets.
I luv ya video game history vids. Keep them coming man
Thank you very much
Another great video! I remember going to duck creek mall, heading to shoe carnival and they had one of these in the back. Was one of my favorite games.
Wow, the old shoe Carnival at Duck Creek. I remember it well. Was in the arcade located near the store?
PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries no, no arcade. They might’ve had two games, but I believe it was just the one altered beast machine in the back. I was into shoes as a kid, but whenever we went there I’d take just a minute or two to look at shoes, then id head to the back and play as many games as Moms change would allow.
Dude you are hilarious, this channel has unlocked many awesome memories from my youth. Thanks for making these, please keep em coming!
Why thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed the content
As much money I spent on this game I could have probably bought a car
In an alternate dimension your doppelganger walks into a car dealership and hands the dealer pillow cases full of quarters,
...leaves the car dealership with car but empty in his soul, as if he was missing something in his life.
You made the right decision.
LOL, so could I
@@dsandoval9396 You have also bought the original arcade cabinet. With quarters.😎
Seen your video in recommended & im glad i clicked it. Great video

Excellent video, I've been playing this game for decades and I thought I knew everything about it, looking forward to you other videos.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks
My favorite version is the one on the Sega 3D Classics Collection for the 3ds. Congratulation for your channel, it grows so fast.
I have not got to try that on a real 3Ds yet. Thanks for the nice words, let you enjoy my channel
Saved up and bought a Genesis just so I could play this game at home. They had it at an arcade that had a backroom full of older less popular games and I was blown away by the voicing and shapeshifting the beast offered. Just had to have it at home.
They did a reallly good jobIn my opinion
I played this on the Genesis. I liked how the power-ups and attack modes changed with each level. You weren't able to develop one strategy that worked for the entire game, you had to adjust your strategies for each level.
11:10 I counted 8 colors on screen... 🤔
I guess my joke doesn't work then
Thank you for this video! I loved it! Altered Beast holds a special place in my gamer heart. I played at my best friends house as a kid and as soon as I could get it for myself I was addicted to it. I still play it but mostly on my switch. Great work.
Thank you so much for the nice words. I always enjoy the game as well
Excelllllenttt! Always excited when you upload a new vid! Thank you for doing what you do sir.
That's very nice of you, thank you for watching :-)
Is the wolf in the nintendo version doing a hadoken?
It sure looks like it and this was before streetfighter came out
It definitely looks like he's using both hands to throw it.
Another awesome video! Take care and be safe out there, Sir.
Thank you very much. You stay safe as well my friend
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Thank you very much, Sir.
Thank you for these videos. I never thought I'd get to learn stuff like this
Glad you like them!Thank you so much
Weird that you didn’t mention “An American Werewolf in London” as the werewolf transformation sound effects were lifted straight from it.
I loved the arcade marquee with the eyes. My friend and I had so much fun playing it.
It was fantastic back in the day
so glad i found about this channel, Patman is the best boomer
Fantastic,Thank you for watching. I appreciate the nice words
Oh....it's a remastered video.....see I thought they had done a remastered Altered Beast game and you got me excited =(
Sorry it was a confusing title
why the fuck is this reccomended in ices chanel
I liked this video. Thanks for the Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) memories!
Absolutely, thank you so much
Great work mate. "Rise from your grave" used to scare me as a kid, echoing in an empty arcade room 😅
Thank you my friend :-) the voice from sinIstar to get
I love your videos! Keep at it.
Thank you
That werewolf howl really sounds like the Howl from the Movie an American werewolf in london...but this game first came with the Sega Genesis console when we bought it when I was a kid..keep up the Good videos PatmaQC (y)
It is from American werewolf. I just re-watched that movie a couple of weeks after I did the video and noticed it. Wish I would have known it before because I would've included it. Thanks for the nice words
Patman: "Dragons & tigers & bears."
Dorothea: "Oh my!|
LOL, thank you
The transformations scared the hell outta me as a kid.
I never actually Beat the NES version so I was not aware of that. Thanks for the info and the nice words
I liked this video. Brought back some old memories. Great game.
Thank you very much
Ahh, this is why I remember the console version looking a lot better than it did, I was remembering the arcade version
Wow i forgot about that ps2 game & the gba game... once J&L reopens in NY in will pick them up! Thanks! Great video
Thank you very much, I appreciate the nice words
AB,Robocop,NBA JAM,WWF were my favorites!
Those are all classic games
So many, many hours spent on my Mega Drive playing this. Good memories.
Absolutely
I love this game. Remember playing it back in the 80's arcade growing up. I love the fantasy genre. The best arcade version I've played is on the Xbox 360. The game only costs $4.99 on the Xbox Live Store. Thanx for the video!
Thank you for the info and thanks for watching
Phuture, the acid house group, sampled this back in 1992’s “Rise From Your Grave”.
I'm glad you did this one!!!!
Thank you hope you enjoy it
Awesome video... I remember I never got to finish the game... was too hard for me.. but sega got my attention with this game.

Thanx!
That is a very good documentary excellent job
Thanks a lot :-)
Good video... I never got chance to play the arcade cabinet version much personally but loved the megadrive version
The mega Drive was a very good conversion
The genesis port has to be one of the best arcade to console ports ever
Absolutely
There's clear influence from Jason And The Argonaughts, to the point that one of the monsters is straight up listed from the movie.
M2 used the Mega Drive/Genesis version for the 3DS conversion because the original arcade had a single flat background. The Mega Drive / Genesis actually added parallax scrolling to the background, which could be converted to 3D. Cool interview backed up here

Good video! I had no idea they remade it on PS2... Looks interesting.
Thank you, it was pretty good for a remake. You should check it out if you are a fan
As a young child this game terrified me and even today I'm impressed by the creativity in enemy design. I mean, a carniverous beanbag chair that can leap 18 feet into the air? What mind comes up with this stuff?!
LOL, comment of the day
Still love this game to bits. Only have the Mega Drive version of this but still. The mega drive version isn’t as good looking so for almost 30 years i thought the two headed wolves were two headed pigs. A few years ago i played this in the arcade in Japan and they are so clearly wolves :)
I have always enjoyed it
Thanks. I almost forgot I played this when I was a kid in my "terminator ending man" console.
Glad you enjoyed this
Couldn't imagine being a kid playing this in the arcade then getting a home version and u put in the MSX version
. No kid should have to endure that. Thank God I had a NES first.
My own streamlined lore of Altered Beast, based on the lore from Western and Japanese releases:
A long time ago, a race of people who could use the powers of animals and even be able to transform into ones conquered the world.
Sounds pretty good to me, start writing a script :-)
Loved this video and game. Played it in the arcade and with retro gaming being so popular, an updated version packaged with the original is long overdue.

Altered Beast is an old Sega classic. It's always been one of my favorite games and was the first genesis games I ever played in Sears. It along with Segas other arcade classics made the Genesis the console to own in it's early years.
I agree 100%
how did i miss that cameo in wreck it ralph, awesome video

I never knew about the Easter Eggs in the game. Never thought about the Golden Axe enemy.
I recognize it even back in the arcades but as far as Alex kid reference I didn't realize that until later on
Just beat it on my Sega Genesis playing two player with my 7yr old nephew. He loves this game and so do I.
I've introduced it to my 11-year-old and he loved it, thanks for sharing
Be sure use the code to beast select. (Beast Select Hold A + B + C + Down/Left and then press Start) It adds alot of replay value to the game. You can make it a total cakewalk by picking the 5 dragon all 5 levels, or make it extra hard by selecting beast that are terrible match ups for the bosses like the Wolf against the Second boss. You can just randomly pick forms making each playthru radically different. I didn't realize that code existed til much later when I was playing a collection of classic on my dreamcast in the early 2000s.
@@Lastjustice I hold B and press start to bump up the health and lives. I didn't know there were other codes. Thank you.
