    Thanks for another great video!
    I typically carry more line, about 50' or so. I also keep a couple of small eye screws in my kit so I can make a makeshift rod & reel.
    I liked the idea to use the nut as a weight. even added a pair to my fishing kit! :) Though, if you know your knots, you can even use small stones found by the shore of the body of water in a pinch.
    If you've got the time and tools to make hooks from nails, I would suggest offsetting the hook slightly by giving the bend a slight twist so that when laid down on a flat surface, the hook itself doesn't lay flat.

    Soda cans or bottles as reels, nuts for sinkers, sticks for bobs or pieces of foam and reclaimed fishing line w/hooks from the trees surrounding the banks of Lake Michigan was how I used to improvise my fishing kits. That with a 5 gallon bucket for a seat & a coffee can full of worms I'd get the night before from the yard and I was golden for a summer day of budget angling. :)

    When you first said, "Strike Indicator" I thought, "Dave is a fly fisherman"...then you mentioned Tenkara :) Fly fishing is one of my passions. I have not tried Tenkara yet but would like to pick one up. Thanks for the video and your work.

    I don't go packing into the wilderness without one of my Ron Popeil "Pocket Fisherman". Had one as a kid and caught a lot of fish with that little sucker. Will easily haul in a 15 lb. fish. Light weight, just clips right on to a pack or belt. Keep one in the cars "emergency breakdown" kit also. Wal-Mart... $15.00.

    fascinating what you can catch a meal with. I wonder if fishing of some sort was the earliest form of hunting, it having less personal risk. I seem to recall one of your videos in which you used a thorn and another using that trout tickling technique. Seems like you might want to beat a better point on that nail.

    Nice video. In Canada and in some states they have laws on barb less hooks, I guess if you where in a real survival situation then you could get away with it . This would mean the chance of you getting caught would be your rescue.

    • @binnsbrian
      @binnsbrian 8 років тому +1

      what does the law say?

    • @MatanuskaHIGH
      @MatanuskaHIGH 8 років тому +1

      lol That's for catch and release..if you are trying to eat that doesn't apply

    • @EdwinDueck
      @EdwinDueck 8 років тому +1

      +Brian Binns if you get caught using barbed hooks you are fined, could loose your fishing gear, your vehicle and you license to fish.
      It's pretty serious out here.

    i like the thought of a nail for a fish hook however i would choose to use a longer nail and bend me in a loop for the fish line to attach too, I think that would be a lot easier to deal with and eliminate slippage on the straight line hook. cause you never know, the " Whopper " just might bite your low tec hook and bait, lol.. think smarter not harder

    I would like to get more information on a fishing device called a Gorge I have never been able to find a video of anyone using such a thing it is a small piece of bone twig what have you like a half of a toothpick sharpen both ends tied in the middle a tag lava bait fish swallows it when you pull it comes flat like a toggle can you pull the fish in the fish is going to die for food anyways so I'm still trying to find a video on someone using them and how effective they actually are it's supposed to be a primitive pre fishing hook device

  • @levicaddell1077

    Dave your homemade fishing gear is cool, but it is really not "commen man" as you need $1000 worth of tools to make it. ☺ (vice, drill press, doweling tools, bench grinder, etc.) For those of us on a fixed budget, etc. those tools are out of reach.... It is much more practical to go to Walmart (or such) and for about $3 I got a pack of #10 hooks, sinkers, foam ear plugs (for a bobber) and spool of 8lb line. It is fun to see you do your homemade stuff, but not practical for those in an apartment or on a tight budget with no large power tools..... just saying.
    However, I love your watching your creativity at work.....
    BTW: as a little kid in KY I used to catch fish with a string and a thorn... used a pebble for a sinker.
