I think this lens is perfect for landscape! For landscape I'd (personally) take the Sigma over the Sony anytime. It's so much lighter and fits in my outdoor camera bag much better. Optically I get the same performance when shooting landscapes.
Great review man! Would be great if you make something focused on filmmaking. Also, what are your thoughts on the oss?. Wishing you an increased viewership 😄😄😄. Subscribed.
I love my 100-400. It is not a Sigma, but a Minolta AF 4.5/6.7. They were first made in 1995 and led the way for this focal length. Accurate and relatively fast (screw driven), is a true APO lens, gives great sharpness and only weighs in at 840g. I love this focal length for all sorts of photography on FF and APSC.
Hey Brian, I'm up here in Sonoma County. I just got my Sigma 100-400 DG DN OS for my a7Riii. I shot it a bit today and everything looks real good. I think I'm going to like this lens. Thanks for the video. Subbed.
awesome Vid! I did not check the count of your views and followers prior to watching. When doing so after the vid I needed to look twice, like what? so few? u must be starting right now. Really good vid! Keep on going!
Nice review! I think I'm picking this lens for the Sony A7III. So far the review has been pretty good. Oh, it look like you're from the bay area? I am too! Thanks for the review
I got the Sony 200-600 G OSS and after using that, I realized that there wasn't significant difference between 400-600 at all. The sigma 100-400 to me is a better choice given the light weight and price.
Yes, there is when you shoot it in APS-C crop mode, that's a difference of 300mm focal length. I shoot birds which was why I never touched the Canon EF 100-400mm II, is just not long enough when there are better alternatives out there. I am planning to upgrade next month, the reason I am considering to switch from Canon to Sony is exactly because of the Sony FE 200-600mm since I don't shoot with huge primes. Even more importantly, aside from the 600mm reach or 900mm in APS-C crop mode, the key thing to note is the Sony's far superior internal zoom design as compared to any other 400mm+ super zoom out there in the market. The FE 200-600mm has a much shorter throw, if I am not wrong it is only a 90 degrees turn to get from 200mm to 600mm. You can't do that with an external zoom, is an innate design issue when so much of the lens is retracted when not in use. Take the Sigma 150-600mm for example, it will take me 4 turns in shooting position to get from 150mm to 600mm. On top of that, the zoom ring is stiff even for the super expensive Canon RF 100-500mm where it has a smoothness adjustment ring to supposedly to make it less stiff. That would make it terrible for BIF shots. In my opinion, the Sony FE 200-600mm is without doubt the best super zoom in the market right now for birding. Just my two cents.
Great video!, Just got the lens, do you hear humming noise from the lens? Which is only audiable when you get closer to the ears, once the OS is turned off it's gone.
Oof. I didn't hear any humming coming from the lens but I also did a majority of my shooting with this lens outdoors so I can't say it didn't exist for sure. I'd definitely send Sigma an e-mail and see if you got a bad copy.
Thank you from south korea for very informative review. I had used sel70300g and now am considering to go sigma 100-400. I use telescopic lens mainly for shooting moon, sun etc. It would be very appreciated if you share your experience about shooting those things. Thanks again!
Hi Brian, good review! I have a quick question: Did you notice any noise while using this lens? I was able to pickup some noise as it focused. I've been using the 24 70 dg dn art lens and that lens is silent.
Unfortunately the lens doesn't come with a tripod collar, you'd have to purchase that separately. The rental unit I pre-ordered from LensRental also did not have the tripod collar. I had the same apprehension about the lens mount strain before I received the lens but it's built very well and did not have me worried when mounting the camera onto the tripod. I would recommend buying the tripod foot since the lens did make my ballhead tilt slightly when mounting to the camera body. However, if you are simply walking around and not necessarily using a tripod, the lens is extremely comfortable to hold in the hands.
Hi Brian, thanks so much for this informative video. I travel internationally a great deal (not now, unfortunately) so size/weight are huge factors-but I also want superior images beyond cell phones. So, I've been using the Sony A6000 for years (love it) so went for the A6600. Here are my lenses at this time: Sony 18-135mm, 55-210 Sony kit, Sigma 16, 30mm. The last lens I want is a super zoom. The Sigma looks to have great zoom specs, but is super long and heavy. This is a problem when I think of going places and needing to cut back on my equipment. Any thoughts regarding this lens for a traveler and/or alternatives that are shorter/lighter in length? Thanks for your video!
Great question! I'd check out the Sony 70-350 G lens since it's specifically designed for crop sensor cameras like your A6600! It's about half the weight of the Sigma and about two inches shorter.
Definitely not as good as the Sony 100-400 GM but definitely possible. Close focusing distance is a bit farther but not bad and the fact this lens jumps to 5.6 and 6.3 so quickly might remove a lot of depth of field you might be looking for.
At the moment, Sigma's contractual agreement with Sony denies them the ability to create certain accessories like teleconverters for the E-Mount. This might change down the road if they change the contract. What Sigma has to say: "We develop lenses based on the E-mount specifications disclosed by Sony Corporation under a license agreement with Sony Corporation. Therefore, we do not develop accessories that are not based on it."
What do you think this lens for landscape? thanks :)

Great video, no bullshit. Just the necessary info about the lens. I like this kind of review!!!

Thank you!
Thanks for the information.
what do you think about sony 70-350 lens ??
Does the relatively high f-stop number mean its not that good for portraits and indoor sports? Thanks!
I'd generally stick to a 70-200 at f/2.8 aperture if possible for portraits and indoor sports!
Do you get a good sharpness with the a6400?
great video man

Hi Brian, I’ve heard this lens loses sharpness when used on a Sony APS-C? Did you notice by how much?
Hi Sho! I haven't heard of this! I haven't done enough tests on a crop sensor camera to say anything definitively.
Question, does this lease fit for the Sony a7iii?
Great video!, Just got the lens, do you hear humming noise from the lens? Which is only audiable when you get closer to the ears, once the OS is turned off it's gone.

I haven't been able to hear too much noise but I was outside for a majority of my time while using this lens!
Very nice video!
Hey Brian, I noticed you didn't use a tripod collar. Did you feel any strain on the body's lens mount when on a tripod or carrying it by the body?
Unfortunately the lens doesn't come with a tripod collar, you'd have to purchase that separately. The rental unit I pre-ordered from LensRental also did not have the tripod collar.

I believe Brian meant the Sony SEL70350G E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 for APS-C. There is a Sony 70-300G for full frame.
@@MarkAngeloKung Thanks for the correction Mark! I did mean to recommend the 70-350!
Just snagged the lens on BH edu sale for 850 after taxes! i cant wait to use this lens!
Congrats! You're going to love it!
How about close up distance,is there ability to shoot macro photography like g master lens?
Definitely not as good as the Sony 100-400 GM but definitely possible. Close focusing distance is a bit farther but not bad and the fact this lens jumps to 5.6 and 6.3 so quickly might remove a lot of depth of field you might be looking for.
@@BrianCho Thanks for the answer👍
Beautiful video bra
Which camera did you use? (link does not tell me)
I used an A7RIV for these photos! Working on getting new links in the description, sorry about that!
the new tamron 70-180 2.8 fixed is a great new value lens being half the price of the new sony 70-200mm 2.8 fixed lens
So definitely no teleconverters for sony version? That's a real bummer. In another review they said they were coming later
