The Leica SL2-S was originally announced in December 2020, so how does it fare in December of 2023? This is the longest gear review video I've ever done for UA-cam. Leica was generous enough to loan me a SL2-S kit for my trip up to New England. Pleasantly surprised by the video and images I captured from this now 3 year old camera. *Disclaimer* TTArtisan sent me this to review I generally avoid recommending lenses that fall on the cheaper side. Typically they have a shoddy build quality and glaringly bad image performance. Come to my surprise when I got my hands on the TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 lens for APS-C/Crop Sensor cameras, it was quite usable at only $73 USD! Creatives: Simon Shim - Shot with a TTArtisan 35mm f1.4

About a year ago, TTArtisan sent me a 35mm f/1.4 lens for Sony E mount to try out. While I took my time using and reviewing the lens (Sorry TTArtisan hah), I decided the best way to really get a feel for this lens was to shoot a real project with it. So I scrapped together a loose idea with my buddy, Simon Shim. Simon is a San Francisco-based street photographer. He was willing to lend his time...

Review: Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS for Sony E-Mount
What a nifty little camera, I really like it's unique design ngl
I've been using this lens for a while. It is very delicate. The metallic body feels very solid. Shooting night scenes with a large aperture is really useful. My old kit lens has a very small aperture and it is very difficult to shoot at night. This lens is absolutely amazing for the price and quality.
I have a question ¿does the Nikon FE2 take photos in colour or just black and white?
It's still a good low light camera without that specific film? what's the next best film to get with it for the light? Or is the Fuji Classica comparable?
how does it compare to the fuji classica N?
Great review
Best review of these lights I’ve seen yet! Thank you so much!
Good. Thanks.
Nice review, the strange thing that the battery % is visible if you use Leica Focus app. Autofocus is great in AF-S and good in AF-C, too bad auto exposure and auto focus is limited to 5 shots per second. It would be helpful if it focused only on the eyes and not the body or you could choose.
Really wish they updated the firmware to included the battery percentage in camera. I agree with everything you said.
Hi, and thanks for your video. I had a SL 601, first model... for two years, and the only time it fell on a wooden floor, the battery was stuck and couldn't take it out... Sent it to Wetzlar for an eventual repair... I bought it second hand two years ago for 2'100 USD... Wetzlar asked 2'890 for the repair... Even though I loved my Leica SL.. I had to refuse the repair, and they kept the camera.... I really hesitate to buy an SL2-S... but after my experience of "it's solidity", the camera is not the best resistant as said or pretended to be. One fall and lost the camera. :-((
Oh wow. I don’t blame you after experiencing that. I hope you were compensated for them keeping the camera.
Really nice vid man. Subbed! I'm seeing this camera all over youtube today cuz I just posted another sprocket hole vid. I think I'm sold though. Gotta get me one cuz doing sprocket hole photos in a yashica is kinda a struggle. Especially to do Horizontal shots. If you want a laugh, check out my youtube shorts where I slam some 35mm in my yashica. BTW that is a nice scanning setup mines so janky lol.
I’m so torn on this camera. I love the size and weight and operation. But the corners are so weak that sometimes I wish I was just shooting a (muskier and heavier) film SLR with a good 28mm or 24mm lens. It often feels like the only usable part of the image is the equivalent of a single 35mm frame. I know there are medium format cameras with better lenses, and there are means of adapting 35mm film into them. But the loading is always something of a kludge, while the sprocket rocket’s film winding is rather good. I sometimes think about getting a torn or broken folding camera, and hacking that lens onto it. If Lomo ever made, say, a Sproket Rocket Pro which used the lens from one of their nicer medium format cameras like the Lubitel 166+ or the LC-120, I think that would be a big winner. It’d no doubt bulk up the camera, and a 75mm lens would have a very different look, but the gains in IQ and control would be worthwhile.
I definitely resonate with how you feel about the build of this camera. I had it as my third "everyday carry" camera while in Alaska as a backup. I love the ability for the Sprocket Rocket to capture the sweeping landscape of an image, but I do agree that if this camera had a "pro" version it would become much more successful and useful. Fingers crossed, hoping for Lomography to release another iteration!
I keep involuntarily moving the aperture ring along with the focus ring
Nice review although I don`t shoot video. You are correct about the focus. Pretty poor. I use mine for general stuff but shoot a lot of equestrian .It misses more than a modern camera should do .
Bro... this is incredible.
i have this lens. no complains. image quality is good and sharp. everything is good. but the focal length is not for me. too tight, and not enough depth that i need. But i would recommend anyone else if they want to have a 50mm equivalent as their starter.
I got this camera for Christmas it came out with the worst photos I’ve ever seen. How on earth do you get good shots with it?
I like the softer look in video
Thanks for the review. I have a 30 year old Linhof alum & metal german tripod a friend gave me. I reconditioned it with a fresh coat of paint, looks new BUT it's heavy to carry around in the great outdoors I just bought a canon 100-400 USM MK2 lens for my canon 5DMK4. based on your review I just ordered this tripod and the Oben GH-30 Gimbal Head, wish me luck with all the new toys Brian.. thanks again for your review
Thanks for the great review! Btw, I think the sensor on the EVF may be only on that particular camera. My SL2-S Reporter doesn’t get finicky at all. Btw, have you tried setting the focus throw angles? I haven’t seen anyone review on it. I think it helps with the “wired focus” problem. That was one of the features that made me interested in this camera, but I haven’t tried it myself.
I figured it probably had to do with the particular loaner model I received from Leica. Seems like an odd issue to have with Leica's engineering track record. I did read from another comment about setting the manual focus settings to not be acceleration based! I missed that when I was reviewing the camera unfortunately.
@@BrianChoto be honest, it’s quite hard to find how to videos for the Leica SL2-S. Not a whole lot of people use them (at least not on UA-cam), and most review videos are outdated because Leica has updated the firmware a few times. As a result, I’m still learning how to use the camera. 😂 again, thanks for the wonderful review.
SL3 coming real soon, waiting for them to at least be S5iix autofocus performance. Fingers crossed, I've only shot manual focus on sl2s for video or static focus.
Thank you for this review :)
Is this lens a prime lense ?
Prime just means the lens does not have zoom. It's a single, fixed focal length, which this lens is.
@@stantheman1976 okok, so prime is better?
@@harrysharma1 prime is not better or worse. It depends on what you are shooting. If you're doing anything where you'll need to get closer to your subject and can't physically move closer you'd need a zoom of some type. It's one of those situations where there is no right or wrong answer. Prime and zoom are just lens types. There are literally thousands of each.
My name is Brian and I also own this camera. Great video.
you shot some photos with A7c right? have you tried it in full frame mode as well, or just cropped. I'd be curious to hear how it behaves while having it in FF mode as well. my friend has the 50 f0.95 and on FF it looks pretty dope. So yeah.
Hi and thanks for this video. You replaced the red dot with a black dot. I'm curious about your black dot. Can you tell me more about it? Could you tell me where can I find this kind of black dot? Thanks in advance
Leica themselves actually had their red dot covered. It's possible this SL2-S was a loaner model and therefore never had the red dot to begin with.
For all of you photogs out there, this is a VERY video-centric review.
14:35 one thing you didn’t touch on in this section is that you can actually change the manual focus settings to not be acceleration based. In fact, you can dial in how many degrees you want it to turn from close focus to infinity! So it’s really the best focus by wire system out there.
16:06 also the Leica 24-70 focuses much faster than the Sigma. As a general rule the Leica made SL lenses focus better than the Sigmas on the SL cameras.
@@_parkphoto Thanks for the corrections! Wish I had more time to discover this. Pinning so people are aware.
@@BrianCho for sure, thanks! I’ve been shooting the SL2-S since August so I’ve become pretty familiar with it.
I couldn’t agree more with you Brian. The only thins is that the 24-70 is newer than the summicron I believe. If it wasn’t for the auto focus it would be a dream camera to work with for video. Cheers
Thanks for the correction Ramon! Enjoying your content right now :)
Awesome vid, I just ordered one and am excited to try it.
great video! thanks for sharing!
If you're into high contrast black and white with crazy resolution, you should really give Ferrania p30 a go. It's a little harder to shoot but the images are staggeringly pretty.
Ektar is my fave C41 stock. Love Velvia 50 on 120, but any film is good if you enjoy the process.
What iso did you expose the delta 3200?
🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
you nailed this list! you even mentioned natura 1600 😭🙌
Hey, Sayan this side I have one question. Actually I am a student and just got one second hand fuji camera. Now I want a lens for night time videography. I am also an artist who posts various videos. I have a few lights and as I have my college during day time coming and drawing at night is kind of relaxing but can't record as my current lens has 2.8 f stop. I am planning to buy one lens that will give me the liberyof shooting some film footage for my job and also those of my artworks during night. so which f stop would be a better option for me a0.95 or a 1.2 or a 1.4. I actually don't have a lot in my pocket and at Max can just buy one lens. So if you can help me a bit would be great. Lots of love from India🇮🇳🇮🇳
Hi Sayan. 0.95 and 1.2 lenses are notoriously hard to focus and typically produce soft images. Unless if your 1.2 lens has autofocus I'd stick with a 1.4 lens.
hello, great vid by the way. What camera did you use?
Sony a7IV
Es gibt soviel gut, auch alte linsen da draußen. Und das zeigt, es zählt das Bild und nicht die Ausrüstung
Hi Brian, Just wondering to see if this is compatible with Sony A7iii ?
It is compatible! It will be slightly cropped since this lens is intended for APS-C sensors.
dude, i got one exactly the same color as yours and i love the images it produces. well, its low-fi but it has the distinctive characteristic that no digital cameras can emulate. its a keeper!
Just bought a Sprocket Rocket and looking to shoot some black and white film. Absolutely love the grainy "GIANT CAMERA" shot at 0:05. What stock did you use?
Cinestill BwXX! My favorite black and white film stock
Amazing content! Its a pleasure to watch this clip and a very inspiring story too. Your Videos deserve way more audience!
Thanks for making this Brian. Have been contemplating using this and getting a used Fuji xe1 to try and simulate old film pix on street. What you think?
Sounds like a sweet street photo setup! I've been thinking about a combo like this too. The TTArtisan 35 is such a compact lens, carrying it around wouldn't be a problem at all.
@@BrianCho thanks a bunch for your advice! Best of luck with your work in NY! I have been watching a bunch of stuff from Paulie B. And the NY street photo scene trying to learn. Maybe you can connect with follow Korean John Wha. 😊 -Thomas
As far as I understand NP mode activities at 800 ISO so you could shoot it with Portra 800 at night. From my experience Natura 1600 looses sensitivity really fast even when frozen. So I don’t think this really shows what the camera can actually do in low light.
I've been looking for something exactly like this for my Leica M. I thought I would have to settle for the Voigtlander 15mm f/5.6. Thank you sir.
that is a good tripod for short people....
I'm tall and looking at their RC-8880. Probably a lot taller than you.
Did you go through that many rolls of film or did you use multiple cameras?
Went through all those rolls in one morning!
thinking of getting it for $249 right now on B&H deals event! my first tripod, will probably pair it w the Oben GH-30 Gimbal Head. Hope it all goes well, thanks for the vid!
Nice!
