    Saying that cutting inflation is the same as a tax cut is like saying pressing a little less hard on the accelerator is the same as using the brakes.

      By their logic, increased inflation is a tax rise, so we had 10p tax rise, followed by a 5p tax cut. Of course, the reality is that as they increased VAT from 17.5% to 20% (just after it had gone up from 15% to reduce pressure during the financial crash), everything has been a couple of % more than it could have been for the last 13 years! But dont worry, the richest did actually get a 5p tax cut!

      @@italktoomuch6442 he says press the accelerator less hard, meaning you're not letting off the gas, you're still accelerating. Engine brake comes in when you let off the gas, not while you're accelerating.

      I'm not going to defend the Tories...but a tax cut, although it will free up disposable income for many of us, will also then lead to an increase in inflation.
      This will end up with the original tax cut advantages being wiped out...leaving us in the same position as today while reducing the income used to support public services.
      You may not like Rishi...but his understanding of economics and finance is to be trusted.

      We got the politicians we deserve. We elected people who don't appear to believe in anything but lining their own pockets and/or daren't say what they DO believe in case it exposes them as the unprincipled fools that they are.
      British politics now is all about staying in power and not about improving the lives of the people.

    • @nickrails
      @nickrails 8 місяців тому +2

      We don't get tue politicians we deserve at all. We get to vote on the ones that are available in the system that exists. Reform and evolution of our political system (eg getting money/lobbying out of politics, some kind of PR) isn't the kind of stuff that you can coalesce major country wide demonstrations and civil disobedience over.
      Labour will just about win the next election mainly because the population is appalled with the Tories. They will get them out using first past the post and by voting against them. How many are voting for the shadow cabinet? Or will we end up with only viable alternative to the current twats via the current system? When Labour get a majority they will have no interest in reforming our democracy. And so it goes on.

      I had a dream lately, where I probably ran through the times, timetravel or something maybe, all the times were separated by heavy doors and the rest was a corridor/hallway... it ended with the nazi time and the last door was the Nuremberg Trials... I have no idea why I dreamed that. Literally crazy. I also saw the H guy, the fuhrer as they called him... I stood right in front of him, plain spooky, and it began with the 16th century... some British King being crowned or married or something. Eerie...I stood in front of the last door and did not want to enter, the shock when I opened the door was huge, cause I saw it all, the hall was packed full...
      🤔
      Well... no idea why I wanted to share this... but it must have had a meaning, it was too strange a dream. Never "experienced" anything like that before. Cause the end of the dream was like the exit into my times, which is now... and it ended with the Nuremberg Trials.

    The best bit of the "15 minute city" thing is that the guy who came up with the concept (which, as Jonathan points out, hasn't been done anywhere in reality) has pointed out that his idea bears basically no resemblance to how Grant attempted to describe it.
    My favourite bit though goes to the minister sent out to try and defend the claims about a meat ban who, when she failed to produce a single example of Labour arguing for it, fell back on just going "Well Keir doesn't always say what he means"

      The thing with profanities is...they lose their power to shock, if they're overused anyway. There's also the danger of making you look, like you're just using them as 'filler words', because you don't have a well rounded vocabulary. Or that you don't have sufficient self control, to keep your behavior and language in check, when in public.
      So it's a fine line to walk.
      I by no means mean, that words like 'fuck' should never, ever be used in public discussion. But if you want people to actually take note, when you're using them, you have to refrain from overusing them.
