At the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, Death lasted around 20 minutes.... The last section was done with no PA to the audience just their own equipment....
It's been 5 years and this is still the freshest, most exciting (yet poignant) thing out there. It seems I'm seeing 40 something years of my favorite bands flashing right before my eyes in one group! Amazing!!!
I put their first ep on my turntable yesterday, first time in maybe 5 or 6 years - and I could swear it got a lot better. They shouldn’t have changed their name. It’s the right name for them, and it’s a creative expression. Woke activists are hands down the worst people in the world. I still call them Vietcong, and when I play their record, I reach for the one that says “VIETCONG” on it, and I encourage everyone who buys their new records to grab a big, black Sharpie, cross out whatever they’re calling themselves now, and unapologetically write “VIETCONG” on it ☕️
Okay, I'll own up, I'm the listener that looked it up... "Where does the expression ‘by the skin of my teeth’ come from? After Shakespeare, a prolific coiner of new words, the King James translation of the Bible has been the biggest source of phrases in English. ‘By the skin of one’s teeth’ is one of them. Meaning ‘narrowly’ or ‘barely’, and referring usually to a narrow escape from disaster, the phrase comes from the Book of Job, in which Job is subjected to horrible trials by Satan, to be relieved finally by God. The precise phrase Job uses is slightly different: ‘My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth’ (19:20). Exactly what ‘the skin of one’s teeth’ might be is not entirely clear, and there have been many theories put forward. The most plausible explanation is that it refers to the thin porcelain exterior of the tooth (rather than the gums). In other words, Job escaped with his teeth, but just barely. Job is comparing the narrow margin of his escape with the shallow ‘skin’ or porcelain of a tooth: the equivalent, in fact, of a ‘hair’s breadth’." Saw them live in Vienna on a hot summer night in a tiny venue. They had to stop after 45min as no one could stand the heat anymore- best 45min ever, sweat dripping out of every pore not only because of the heat but because of the energy spend speeding along to those tunes! Amazing. Included a nice chat with the band outside afterwards. Wish they‘d still perform & tour!
Their album is so interesting. all songs are well connected together. the experience is worth it. i wanna see them live as soon as possible !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved Women and love Viet Cong/Preoccupations. For some reason I think they could do a killer collaboration with Spencer Krug of Sunset Rubdown or John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees.
Seeing these guys not too long ago in Fredericton in a small pub was extravagant. They definitely have an amazing atmosphere live, a few times i forgot what life even was or that i had a body. Definitely was an amazing experience overall! I had known them under this name but never knew they had changed to Preoccupations and was definitely super surprised finding out who it was i was really getting to see.
My god I only listened to the self titled album like 5/6 times, finding it INCREDIBLE but THIS here it's UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. PREOCCUPATIONS is good but this was FIRE.
+JosephGallagher totally agree with you about the voice- really unique, even for the genre- and I also completely agree that KEXP should do a little more to promote their bands- a least a link would be appreciated!
At certain times, his voice reminds me of Richard Butler from The Psychedelic Furs. Either way, Matt's voice is pretty rad! I know I'm a little late but here's their website: preoccupationsband.com/ facebook.com/Preoccupationsband/ They've changed their name to "Preoccupations".
reedca97 there are really no comparative listens, although it seems youtube has seen it's fair share of ultra-rare #noiserock uploads since two thousand fourteen, at least that's how i've noticed it
The band This Heat definitely sound like these guys a bit. These guys are a bit less disjointed than This Heat but there are parts of their songs that sound pretty close, also some of the vocal harmonies.
+Dem Frootloopsies I have been learning a lot of their songs on guitar and they are quite easy. The difficulty in their music comes from timing between the two guitarists I feel. Just my opinion, not a great guitarist btw.
Connor Sarsfield It's like Spiral Architect. I love this kind of technical metal. That time signature change from 5/7 to 13/4 is crazy coupled to that polyrhythm.
i've watched this whole thing about 6 times since i found it a few days ago. holy shit this band kicks ass live, i know they just spent a whole year touring but i hope they do it again after they've chilled out for a bit and recorded some shit
They were going so hard on that last song that the drummers hat fell off from the sheer force they were exhibiting. Amazing. Definitely checking this band out
"second hand industry" as though the first time lyrics make sense having seen them putting on a musical smorgasbord of skill, as the set progresses they ramp it up with "muted lips on japanese ships" and "deflated amplifiers" electric razors, how soon after did they become #preoccupations for again, skill, now with focus, and i'd say drive but i don't know that they utilize that feature other than as stated in the interview "everything's turning inside out" "we'll never get home" - the lyricism which can be difficult to pick against the raucous tunes would make a beautiful play, a sequel to #wherethewildthingsare plus one and closer in detail than the one by the similar author about monsters in closets
"You got time for one more?" "Yeah!" ...Plays 15 minute long song.
And what a song :)
PopeSnarkyIII This actually introduced me to the song Death
+PopeSnarkyIII That song is my wake up alarm.
At the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, Death lasted around 20 minutes.... The last section was done with no PA to the audience just their own equipment....
hahahaha! Yes. Vietcong's Crown Jewel.
Revisiting this band has been an absolute joy.
Amazing! I can only imagine how a KEXP performance from Women would've been, such a shame they never had the chance!

SAME
totally

They remind me of Gang of Four, especially on Bunker Buster, and that's a very good thing.
Ahhh, I just got White noises stuck in my head again.
was lucky enough to play a show with these guys back in january - their last ever show as Viet Cong. fuck they shred hard
What's your band's name man
It should be on everyone's bucket list to see Death live
I keep coming back to this KEXP, Cheryl and the Preoccupation boys are a match made in heaven
Dudes rock
Okay, I'll own up, I'm the listener that looked it up...

Thanks!
Wow! Love this band. post-punk guitar meets krautrock rhythm. Passionate vocals too.
Thank you for this.
Post-punk usually meets Krautrock rhythm
As a gear nerd, I can't help falling in love with that blue Jaguar!
Its green, but still.... Very cool!
sorry, you're right, I have problems distinguishing some colours!
I just wanna know what's up with that 12 string
Hagström. Those guitars are fucking sick
theLatinloser what about the double p-bass pick ups
0:25 oh the irony
little did Flegel know...
ik I wish they kept the name
Wish they played "Continental Shelf"
+Daniel Betts I'm sure it would have been unrealistic at the time, but damn did I want to hear "March of Progress"
+Ashton Young March of Progress is out of this world, such a crazy song.
Ashton Young the live version of that song is bonkers
Do you have a video of it?
Double precision pickups on the bass??
So glad they played Bunker Buster.. My favorite song from the album!
Saw them live in Vienna on a hot summer night in a tiny venue. I saw them live and felt the best song-surprisingly-, was unconscious melody.
easily one of my favorites
still one of the best KEXP performances
I loved Women and love Viet Cong/Preoccupations. For some reason I think they could do a killer collaboration with Spencer Krug of Sunset Rubdown or John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees.
This Heat
Viet Cong
Jesus that was some intense shit right there.
iTroozTrooperDown "they can't comprehend it"

Drummers tshirt - Budenell Social Club, best venue in Leeds!
dannys playing on bunker here is probably the highlight of this set
i swear to god cheryl waters makes the best interviews
Ugh Death is such a good song
Full Performance (Full Performance)
+Jacob Anstey funny!! i remember your sense of humour.. it used to make me laugh all the time... i miss you
You know, on the first two I thought they started off kilt, and then DESTROYED!!!! Such goodness all around. Joy Division Forever!!
They are unbelievably tight
Excellent performance, and I love how much the host so sincerely appreciates the band. Great energy on both sides!
you gotta see them live. It's something else, i'm telling you
When the drummer first started, it seemed like the video was sped up. Crazy tempo. Singers voice reminds me a little of Screaming Trees guy.
Love this video. I've listened to it about 20 times so far. I like the sound of this recording better than the album versions.
My god I only listened to the self titled album like 5/6 times, finding it INCREDIBLE but THIS here it's UNBELIEVABLY GOOD.
PREOCCUPATIONS is good but this was FIRE.
listen with headphones- LOUD. absolutely mind-blowing. or maybe that was my eardrums..
Stampy Peacefrog simulated orgasm
I absolutely love his voice!
I think KEXP should put a link to the band's official page in the description of the videos.
JosephGallagher, we would love to , but they don't seem to have an "official page"? Label pages, Facebook and Bandcamp can be searched easily.
+JosephGallagher I think I like his brother's voice betta
+JosephGallagher I think it's pretty shit.
+JosephGallagher totally agree with you about the voice- really unique, even for the genre- and I also completely agree that KEXP should do a little more to promote their bands- a least a link would be appreciated!

Jeden z najlepszych mini-koncertów w KEXP !!!! Szacun, odjechałem ... :-)
Fantastic band... awesome album guys cheers from Brasil!!!
Mission of Burma. And Sonic Youth. And Interpol. AND JUST FREAKING AWESOME
Don't forget Gang Of Four!
+reedca97
and Joy Division
I don't these guys only really sound like viet cong
reedca97 there are really no comparative listens, although it seems youtube has seen it's fair share of ultra-rare #noiserock uploads since two thousand fourteen, at least that's how i've noticed it
The band This Heat definitely sound like these guys a bit. These guys are a bit less disjointed than This Heat but there are parts of their songs that sound pretty close, also some of the vocal harmonies.
Glad I found this band. They sound pretty fucking good.
I love this perforrmance, I really wanted to see Continental Shelf and Death is so much longer, but regardless, amazing job.
I love this show: three of their best songs with Matt's voice at it's best and an album quality mix.
More songs from them, please! I've watched this one 50 times since it was put up.
***** I found that out recently. I like their new stuff too.
That bass tone. For real.
The mix in this set is better than the album
This what real original Goth music sounded like in the 80's.
These songs are ridiculously complex.
not really
+Dem Frootloopsies I have been learning a lot of their songs on guitar and they are quite easy. The difficulty in their music comes from timing between the two guitarists I feel. Just my opinion, not a great guitarist btw.
+Salsa Verde It reminds me of Robert Fripp from King Crimson
Salsa Verde When I said complex I didn't mean so much in the technical aspect but more from the timing and inventive writing.
Connor Sarsfield It's like Spiral Architect. I love this kind of technical metal. That time signature change from 5/7 to 13/4 is crazy coupled to that polyrhythm.
i love the brudenell social club
I want to see them live so badly. Hoping and praying they'll be in Michigan sometime soon 💕
10/7 at the Crofoot, girl!
+Jessica Ellison yes!
I like the Sampler used as Synth keyboard
Big up the drummer wearing a Brudenell tee!
SO INTENSE ! LOVE THIS BAND !
This some baller ass shit.
The mix is so fucking good.
how do you play drums with a cat on your head?
Kevin Suggs - nice job. Viet Cong - excellent.
That’s an interesting bass pickup configuration you have there
Death=finisher of the year
I was going to go out and do stufff... but realized this was all I needed for the night.. in solitude with VC
when the lead singer talks he sounds just like coop in wet hot american summer
i've watched this whole thing about 6 times since i found it a few days ago. holy shit this band kicks ass live, i know they just spent a whole year touring but i hope they do it again after they've chilled out for a bit and recorded some shit
They're actually going to be touring a bit in the coming months around the release of their new album. I'm seeing them in DC myself, super excited :)
The way they just start like that is so fucking cool
They were going so hard on that last song that the drummers hat fell off from the sheer force they were exhibiting. Amazing. Definitely checking this band out
the leadsinger is the bassist. It all makes sense now
I can't even watch any other KEXP videos anymore because they all seem lame compared to Death
Dear goodness. This is wonderful.
Reminds me of Magazine, Television, John Cale, Doors, with influences of the cult UK plunderphonics band, the Perrinormal.
Increíble, dejan todo en el set.
Didn't knew the band, what a pleasant surprise!
wow this is so ridiculously fucking good
Boy they love octaves
Me too
this performance is un fucking real
funk yeah
This lead singer doesn't look a thing like Ian Curtis- and yet this band is sooooo amazing- looking forward to their new material as Preoccupations!
"second hand industry" as though the first time lyrics make sense having seen them putting on a musical smorgasbord of skill, as the set progresses they ramp it up with "muted lips on japanese ships" and "deflated amplifiers" electric razors, how soon after did they become #preoccupations for again, skill, now with focus, and i'd say drive but i don't know that they utilize that feature other than as stated in the interview "everything's turning inside out" "we'll never get home" - the lyricism which can be difficult to pick against the raucous tunes would make a beautiful play, a sequel to #wherethewildthingsare plus one and closer in detail than the one by the similar author about monsters in closets
fuck yes, all the best to pat, rip chris, etc., glad they've carried on
Pretty intense winter weather in Calgary eh? Come to Winnipeg.
Underrated band.
Watching with the sound off. Still good.
I supppose KEXP should add the band's new name, Preoccupations, to this clip
This reminds me a hell of a lot of This Heat and to an extent Big Black.
I can't decide which one I like the most!
Amazing!
KEXP caved and let the band sublet the studio to live in
And the award for best guitar riffs goes to...
Amazing ! thanks for sharing*)
I know this is the bassist from Women because he the only other person in the world to have two PJ pickups on his bass
so coooool
great band!
Yeah!
I WANT MORE VIET CONG.
Reminds me of Sonic Youth with a freaking amazing voice!!
"That was awesome!!!" - Cheryl
I LIKE IT
I love everything about Matt. I want to marry him.
holy shit! dude
Just god damn...
So the guy with the jag and the bass player were from Women?
