We call those *mineral stumps if you allow the new growth on a fully mature tree stump...you have a fully grown root system feeding 5% of what it was required to feed before cutting the tree down...every bit of new growth will be very concentrated with nutrients and minerals...my goats focus on them even if i let them in my alfafa pasture...its choice 👍
I raise Berkshire and Berkshire Cross pigs. They are Nature's Steam Shovel. They cleared an area of Braken in 9 months with virtually nothing coming back the next season ( the previous owners said 3 to 5 years even with herbicides). They are amazing. One warning about predators, although they are virtually bulletproof, there are risks. I lost a 2 year old boar to wounds from a cougar this year. By the way, wish I found you sooner. Great information. Subscribed
Make coffee can kilns and you will have perfect bio char every single time...they are dummy proof..they work in fireplaces and pits or barrels...doesn't matter..ive already made 50gallons of char in my woodstove in a little over a month just throwing a can in with our fire each night
You could also use an old hood for an automobile, as a sled to put the butt ends of the tree on, and also be able to pull several trees at one time without making ruts. My dad hand build a few log cabins in my life time, you can also use a draft animal to pull your trees.
This is great info but I have the opposite issue. I have 5 acres of mostly pasture, and I need trees for a bit of privacy. I'm propagating hybrid willow and hybrid poplar but I need more ideas on trees to plant along a fenceline.
Can you do a video showing how to make the biochar from the pile? Also how big of a pile would you have to have to do it? I don't currently own a barrel, but will be having several fruit trees professionally trimmed this year, so I will have a pile of some size, but I'm a bit concerned about burning something large in a neighborhood, don't want to scare people.
QUESTION: I have a weeping willow tree in my yard that is absolutely covered with willow aphids which are attracting wasps of every type around here. How can I get rid of the aphids IOT reduce the wasps? I have tomatoes and basil near the tree and a tortoise that eats the grass around it and I don’t want to poison my family or pets. On the plus side, I have had almost no damage from tomato horn worms or grass hoppers to my garden this past year but my wife is absolutely terrified to go into the backyard and I’m stuck with caring for her roses. I appreciate the wisdom and insight you give on this channel. Thanks and keep up the good work. Merry Christmas
#permacultureq&a Hey Will! I was wondering if you could speak on the bioaccumulative efficacy of comfrey vs mustard greens? I always use mustard as a cover crop but I also love to eat it as well. As do my animals. I was just wondering if maybe one is better than the other?
Enough with the goat hate. Goat maybe a pain to keep, but in the right context the hardy creatures that put on weight on marginal land. Thats why there are a staple in arid climates. If there was a market for goat meat probably economics would make you see them differently and adapt the context.
I will not watch all this... But I am tired of people moving to the woods and destroying all the trees just to have pasture... Or build houses... So sick of it!

I never thought of it like that but I like it.

Would definitely like a video on making biochar. I always end up with just ash.
You need to quench the fire with water after the wood is burned. If it keeps smoldering it turns to ash.

Excellent + useful video. Much love from out here in Bat Cave. God bless.
Interesting and informative thanks.
Glad to see you back. Blessings.
Old F 150's did good dragging trees too. #FordTough
Biochar, firewood, mushroom logs, building materials, looking for other ideas of what to do with culled trees, mostly maple with some oak, pine, etc.
Getting ready to do this at my mom's place this coming year. Thanks for the refresher!
Christmas Blessings Sweet Man to you and your Sweet Family🎄
Thank you. A lot of good info!

Also, those little wood chips burn aren’t they pretty good for the pigs too??

Saw a guy on Tiktok burning his branches in his pig pastures and the pigs would go snack on the charcoal.

Well I suggest watching it because it isn't what you think it is
