  • In this video we will tell you the early history of the legendary furniture manufacturer Thonet, and the development of their iconic bentwood chairs. This story is really fascinating since it’s in the early days of industrialization. It’s not wrong to say that Thonet produced functionalist furniture a hundred years before functionalism even was invented. Since this story takes place already in the mid-19th century and some details seems a bit difficult to verify, you’ll have to forgive us if some dates or other details are slightly wrong.

Agree with you. Simple and perfectly adapted for mass production. Functionalism way before Bauhaus!

A wonderful chair indeed! Everything Thonet made in the 19th century led up to the B9!

We have a child's chair that probably dates from the early 1900s. It came from a relative who lived near Vienna, and simply looks like a smaller version of the Thonet adult chair designs of that time. Your video was extremely informative, thank you very much. It's interesting to learn that the Thonets not only had great design skills but were also advanced in manufacturing, distribution and marketing.

Thanks! We're so glad you found the video interesting. Sound's like a lovely chair you got. Its really nice with child-size furniture made as small scale replicas of the full size versions. Guess it was even harder to produce the small ones!

Do you know anything about the Thonet model A 665 F? Supposedly designed by Josef Frank. I have been trying like crazy to find any information about it.

Hello! Sorry, but I haven't any good information about this model either. Frank did design a few pieces for Thonet, but it's not a lot of information available about this time in his career. But its a nice looking chair indeed. And quite rare.
