  • Today we're going to talk about a trend that most of you have probably already noticed; we might be a bit late to the party on this one. Nonetheless, what we're discussing are postmodern interior objects made from materials other than wood. Plastic, fiberglass, plexiglass, glass, stone-almost any material except wood. The focus is on weird, unique, and colorful pieces. Sometimes these objects are so unconventional that they no longer resemble furniture. Instead, they stand there like abstract and futuristic sculptures-bold, colorful, and fun, definitely the opposite of functionalism. A relevant question arises: Are wooden furniture out?

The early 2000s is back. It's the colourful and fun items from the millenials child/early-teens-rooms that i feel these designs are inspired by. The music videos shot in futuristic rooms/studios, that crazy tour bus interior in the spice girls movie and when computers/technical items suddenly had that see through plastic in purple/blue/turquoise instead of... greige plastic. We went from square, boring casette tapes and discettes to round holographic cd's. We spent our afternoons in cyberspace for example Habbo hotel (featuring E. Aarnio's Pastilli chair) where you were able to float around exactly like whoever u felt like being. Almost like Neo in the Matrix. Why buh a wooden chair when there is... SEE THROUGH BLOW UP CHAIRS, sometimes with glitter in them?! Why wear a regular paie of jeans when there is SILVER and PINK pleather pants?! And dont forget the fake fur jacket. Yes yes yes! We love everything synthetic and almost out of this world.

We’ll see what remains of these post modern ‘spectacles’ after 70 years of UV damage, use, and abuse; not to mention today’s fickle market. Like today’s social media influencers, I suspect they’ll be tossed to the bin in pretty short order. Just more micro plastic fish food…

3:49 where she goes "nah" cracks me up. Brutally honest. I'd have gotten my feelings hurt

The market for “brown furniture” (a sort of inside-shorthand for wooden antiques and some vintage pieces) has seen a big resurgence over this way over the past couple-three or four years, after being in the doldrums for a couple decades. It’s attributed in part to younger people, with an interest in “sustainability,” entering the market. Better, the thinking goes, to furnish with durable things that already exist than buy new, lower-quality stuff that will be in the landfill before their kids are out of school.

Yeah, you're on to something here. New costumers and new generations always leads to a market for different things.

thanks to you two. Toogood is a genuine English surname I reckon, there are some funny though ancient and authentic surnames knocking about round here - like Gotobed and Bytheway, Thoroughgood is a real surname, but hard to live up to too. I think they were always jokes ... but they stuck! x

They are all hilarious but I think |I would tire of the joke quickly. Classic Scandinavian design is exactly that, classic. It appeals to each new generation because of it's functionalism, grace and craftsmanship. It is also so adaptable to different living spaces. There will always be a space for Classic Scandinavian works but these will be a hard sell in the future, much like the furniture from the Memphis movement of the 80's. A lot of that isn't making the prices it sold for in the 80's when you take inflation into account.

I notice that the advertisements never show anyone actually sitting in the furniture. Especially that 'donut ' like chair. I could probably get in but not get out of it.

It's certainly challenging in the usability department. This is meant to be a display piece, where no actual everyday life ever happens.

All the designs shown are nice and playful, but I would definitely hesitate to buy them. Man-made materials and technology change fast; consequently, they AGE fast. I can definitely see Formica looks dated, but I have still to meet someone that finds natural stone, wood, and organic materials dated...
