I get the darker one. I also read that if you use it, you are to put aluminum foil between the mat and the pan. I tried and it works. It keeps the gunk off the stove. If a little bit of gunk gets on your stove, there is a razor blade gadget that gets it off right away.
Did you contact the company regarding the gunk left at the end on your hob?

Dish rags work great for me. :)
On high heat I'm pretty sure I'd char a cotton dishrag. But agree on lower heat it'd work fine.
Usually induction turns off the burner when too hot, the mat will probably prevent that safety feature.
Right that's one of the reasons why I bought the product! To keep the burner/cooktop itself cooler during high heat searing.
