    I don't agree with everything, but goals can do a lot and progress matters most. this is why, seven years ago trying to get youngest to practice piano and they retorted "I know. Practice makes Perfect", I decided screw Perfection, we're going for progress, and started saying and writing when and wherever applicable #PracticeMakesProgress
    Because, wouldn't you know it practice is about progress.
    Practice moving towards that A
    The more you practice, the more you progress, the easier that task becomes
    Like weights training.
    The weight never changes. Your capacity to handle it does.

      It's a good way to go at it, especially if you or your kid end up being set back in one way or another. I grew up very poor and have disabilities, so on many aspects, progress (or in particularly hard times, trying to regress as little as possible) is the best I can aim for. Allowing ourselves to be disappointed, angry, sad, etc. at set backs or injustices, but also taking the time to learn and heal from them is the best way to avoid wanting to give up.

    I have learned over the last few years that I am quite a perfectionist when it comes to my progression. If I can't be as good as or better than my peers, then I am not succeeding. Mentally, I know this thinking is ridiculous but it is hard to break that thought process. I have tried celebrating the little achievements to combat the sense of perfectionism I feel I need to have, and it helps, but it is still a work in progress.

    • @MauriceOfInfiniteAtrocities
      @MauriceOfInfiniteAtrocities Місяць тому +1

      “A work in progress” sounds to me like another way of saying “moving in the right direction”. I’m sure you don’t need anyone to tell you, but it sounds like you’re doing good.

    • @Dekubud
      @Dekubud Місяць тому

      I'm a perfectionist too and also a nerd, so one consolation I found is in observing my situation/setbacks under every angle so I can optimize my progress. Aka becoming the "best" at understanding what I can and can't do so I don't waste energy on things I can't change, either for now or just in general.

    I agree with everything you said 100%. Especially about goals. If you can narrow your focus on something greater and decide to pursue that as a long term prospect, everything you do and think about all of a sudden becomes only about what's relevant to achieving that goal.
    I think with men in particular, no one really talks about courage anywhere near enough. We don't get told how important it is that we actually hold onto that belief in ourselves. It's essentially all we have as men and like you said we MUST feel useful to justify our existence.

    I read something recently about setting goals for a long way away - like 25 years. (100 quarters because that's a nice way to break it down). The goals become unachievable in the short term and mean that you can only move towards them directionally. Which is your point - just move directionally.

      Wrong, it's exploitable. It's not always exploited. You have agency in the impact and use of your usefulness.

    I like parts of this and don't like other parts.
    Goal setting is excellent and great actionable advice.
    What I don't like is this idea that you don't substantiate that men and women are hardwired so differently and that it is what's causing men to suffer. I think the core difference between men and women's gendered problems is narrative. Men don't have good compelling narratives. "the left" tells them not to be toxic and sometimes airs on the side of demanding apologies from young men for existing (not really that much but some guys feel that way clearly. Meanwhile "the right's" narrative always comes back to tate garbage. Women have a narrative of overcoming a societal problem. I think if more men were imbued with a sort of worker vs. boss mentality they wouldn't get into man vs. woman mentality.
    That's just me though.

    How good is Australia nowadays. A country where the domestic violence figures have been steadily falling for the last 50 years, yet we need a minister for mens behaviour due to the fact 9 people out of 28 million still haven't gotten the message. A country where our 10, 12, 14 and 15 years are mature enough to serve adult jail sentences but those same 10 to 15 year olds AREN'T mature enough to read something on Facebook. Australia, a country where the government SAYS it's doing everything it can to fight the housing crisis, while, important the most immigrants and international students in the history of Australia. At the same time not building any public housing or releasing land. Our government says it believes in climate change and ocean rise due to glacial melt, while they import billions of tonnes of coal to China to be burnt and the politicians but beach front properties.... Men are built around three broad requirements - building, exploring, and fighting
    This seems to be why there is such a gap in the way that men and women perceive Elon Musk. Elon's not a conventionally attractive guy, he's maybe not the sort of guy other guys look to as an example on how to live life, but he wins over a lot of guys by building cool tech, exploring the universe with SpaceX, and fighting against bureaucratic midwits who want to disrupt his businesses and tax him to death.
    Alternatively, a lot of women dislike him because he gives them the ick, he's not a particularly involved father to his many children, he's BFF's with Trump who they despise, and that stuff is what shapes their perception of him. Whereas for men, they don't give a damn about Elon's family life, they just like the fact that he's building the future. The fact is, both perceptions of Elon are true and grounded in fact, but the sexes have a blindness to different sets of values.

    I think it's even more simple than that: guys grow up being given pretty high expectations in life and of life, but it all fell flat and they feel wronged. I think it's fine to feel angry about it, I know I'm angry working hard and going to uni has given me fuck all.
    Now when it comes to being useful and bettering our lives, it's up to us to find our path. I joined the board of my union and participate in my local politics to push for politiciana who'll stop giving tax breaks and subsidies to corpos. I highly recommend volunteering, helping friends/family/neighbors and/or getting into a productive or creative hobby.
    I can't tell if Jordan is serious about the evolutionary biology bit. As a trans guy and someone who has a grad in psychology, I can promise you from both experience and data there isn't a real basal neurological difference between male and female humans. The differences are mostly forged by our environment and a bit by hormones. In relationships, men often feel useless because they aren't participating enough in chores and raising their kids. Women often feel excluded because a lot of men don't open up to their partner, don't let their partner open up or/and make important decisions without even considering discussing them with their partner.
    The main non-physical differences I noted since taking testosterone is that I am less afraid of danger/risks, that I am more confident (but how much of it is hormones VS finally feeling like myself is hard to tell) and I cry a lot less, but it doesn't mean I'm any less emotional. Stuff like increase in uncontrolled rage and violence are caused by injecting/having abnormally high levels of testosterone. Just like any hormone, when it's out of balance, it messes you up.
