- This is a tutorial on using a multi-microphone setup on your guitar amps, and how to phase the correctly. This is one of a few different ways, but this is the way I do it!

Let's call it Phase Alignment not phasing.
Another trick, invert the polarity of one mic and move it until you get the most cancellation, the most nasty fizz in the combined signal. Then change the polarity to normal again and BOOM the two mics are in ideal phase. This also works for mics at different distances and even in an amp sim like Amplitube 3.
This is a really good method tip!
awwww OG baby Fluff. You speak so softly and articulately.
This is a great video... but what if I add an condensor room mic.. will there be a huge phase problem going on ?
Thanks fluff for helping me dual mic my guitar amp for the first time (without phasing!). I used a sm57 and a se r1 ribbon and it sounds amazing! Thanks again :D
Thanks for keeping the information short and sweet.
Finally a good video on Phase i swear people can be so technical with this subject
Well technically....
Hey Fluff, You really read my mind. In your latest video I asked about your multiple mic recording and you send me a answer and now you post a video about that...Great!! You are the top five!
That was the simplest and best tutorial on phase that I've seen!
Super technical diagrams are awesome. Lol. That's why I'm subscribed to this channel. Funny stuff however you do explain things in a way almost anyone can understand. I've just started to get involved in recording and this video makes perfect sense. Well done sir.
I could listen to your talking about that stuff all day. It´s super relaxing :D
Great video - Very helpful! Is there a benefit of using dual mic, vs recording individual tracks with each mic? For example, I usually do 4 recordings: 2 with the SM57, and 2 with the e609. I would think the advantage of using the individual mics would produce 4 unique tracks (that help fatten up the sound), vs. doing the dual mic technique (where I believe you are getting the same amount of tracks, but 2 pairs would be identical?). Thank you!
Short and sweet and INFORMATIVE, thanks!
Dang, nice job explaining and SHOWING phase cancellation. 👍🏻
Thanks man. I you made it real easy to understand. Phase was something i always struggled with and just "winged it". Cheers!
One of the best and precise videos out there 💪🏽💪🏽👌👌 thanks for sharing
This gave me a different perspective on avoiding comb filtering; thank you.
I was going to ask the same thing...but ur answer makes perfect sense...cool video, very useful info, thanks...
Thank you, just what I was looking for!
I actually run 2 separate rigs live. I also add 37ms delay to one rig as well as angle the cabs slightly away from each other.
Happy birthday and thank you for your wonderful videos and tones.
instead of moving microphone can I just move the take in the DAW ? Same result ?
Hey Fluff,
I tried this with my SM57 and E906 (not 609) but when I record they're 180degrees out of phase, when I phase invert the file i'm aligned perfectly, so i know my mics and in the right positions. Only problem is, I just wish they were 180degrees out of phase to start with, i'm using the same mics as you, same cab, and same DAW and i just can't understand how you got them right? I'd really appreciate any help mate!
hi dude, which is the advantage of mixing with two mics simultaneously ? I'm want to use same type of both that your shower
I really like that percussive trick. I usually just look at the metering plugin in Logic that also measures phase but I like this better.
how you do it, is very good thank you for this video it helps me a lot with amplitube 4 in case of 2 amps
Does stereo linking microphones help with phase alignment?
When doing this how do you have each guitar panned? Or do you route both mics to another channel and then double track them? :)
Good info man! ive never even taken that into account when dual micing my cab... Cheers!
If a band has only one guitarist, but wants to mimic 2 would this technique work for a live setting?
Thanks Fluff, very good video!
is it wise to record the delays and reverbs into the amp and into the mic or is it best to add them after with reamping?
great video Fluff
Hey man what do u think an equivalent for the Vintage 30's would be ?? From WGS I know they have the Veteran 30's (Saw your video, awesome as always) But what about a speaker from Eminence ?? Thanks
have you ever used a 3 mic set up or do you do 2 separate recordings for L/R/C.
Since the low frequencies are of a longer wavelength, they are more susceptible to cancellation. This is why when you have noticeable phase cancellation, it causes the tone to sound thin and lacking low end. The short wavelengths of high frequencies pass by so quick that they don't pose as much an issue. So in my opinion when checking phase like this, you should let some low notes sustain for a second and make sure they're lined up. ..or just use your ear to decide what sounds best because you can get some cool tones when the phase isn't lined up so close. Good shit though dude.
stereo on one track instead of two individual track.. is that the same??
dude, it never dawned on me to do this, i just fucked with it when it sounded out of phase. thanks for the tutorial!
not everyone knows this, maybe you do? but on logic, you can zoom in by holding down where you drop the timeline and dragging it down. i discovered it by accident but saves messing about with moving that slider at the bottom of the screen.
Mr Bruce, could you recommend me a stand or clamp for recording my cab, Cheers.
Cool vid fluff. Thx
which mic do you recommend if you had to pick one? The Shure SM57 or the Senheiser e609?
my sm57 sounds pretty nasaly, so I'd go with the 609. From what comparison videos I've seen, the sm57 has more bottom end, while the 609 has a wider range and is more clear
Can i connect the tbone mb 75 to phone?
it's about constructive interference (in phase) and destructive interference (out of phase)
Thanks for this video, man. Makes sense!
Thanks a bunch!
what mics where you holding in the beginning
Makes sense but when you move a track about 30 samples to be in phase with the other one it wouldn't make a difference in time because its a change that small you couldn't ever hear it.
Excellent fluff191!!!
Thank you so Fuckin much sir! Cheers
great info and vid! i think i said it before but yea i love your choice in mics mannn \m/
Hi
. Thanks man it was veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery gooooood. short and usefull
Fluff instead of moving mics wat abt just movin and using the DAW to put in phase ???
That is what I was thinking, you can phase the tracks up after recording, the only disadvantage is that you can't monitor the recording, so I guess phasing them is better, actually you can just phase them via monitor aswell but using a DAW to phase should be more precise.
Yeah, but then you can put both mikes individually where they sound best. Then you can phase them up later. For monitoring, you probably really don't need stereo anyway.
Got it!...nice!
Sweet videos man! I just subscribed. I also do the riff and recording thing. You should check out my EVH 5153 vid! I think your best sound is the Mark IV so far. Keep rockin
or you could just you know flip the waveform in your DAW if they are opposite wave forms ie one goes up when one goes down, mirror, that's true phase.
like it. beard man
nice vid thank you mister fluff i get it!
очень полезное видео, брат!
You should not let the Phase dictate where to put the Mic's just flip polarity on one of the inputs. Problem solved.
Your voice sounds crazy compared to now lol
Old serious fluff is no fun. Current less serious fluff is the only way to be. Lol.
