As a bird photographer, the Canon R7's rolling shutter speed and high-ISO capabilities could be further optimized for capturing avian subjects. A potential R7 Mark II addressing these limitations would be a compelling proposition.

I agree with you, R7 is a good camera with some some significant shortcomings, yet it was a commercial succes with the prosummers wildlife photographers.
An R7 mk ii with a fast readout sensor and improved autofocus would be a great combo with the rf 100-500mm or the 200-800mm and would be very interesting for the growing segment of wildlife photographers.

The kind of upgrades that are needed would catapult this camera into a completely different price point. I don't see that happening. Probably a few small incremental upgrades to keep people buying. The buffer is horrendous, autofocus and IQ mediocre and ISO performance lousy. Probably see the same exact camera with all of these parameters marginally better to keep the price close to where it is. Most bird photographers eventually move on to full frame because they realize the shortcomings of these crop sensor offerings.

    • @PaulBawby
      @PaulBawby 2 дні тому

@@christophercarlimages9003I didn’t say anything about maintaining the price point.
Canon has proven, yet again, that there’s a market for an APS-C pro-summer wildlife camera and many wildlife UA-camrs have mentioned that though the R7 currently has shortcomings it could be a great camera when reach is critical (like with small, fast moving birds) with some significant upgrades.
Yes there are drawbacks to cameras with APS-C sized sensors, but cameras like the venerable Nikon D500 are the proof that full frame isn’t necessarily the only way to go.
As someone who’s had a great number of photos published in national publications I can tell you that the customer doesn’t care about what format you use, it’s mostly about the emotion conveyed by the photo (and I have shot with MFT, APS-C and full frame). I’m not saying that IQ isn’t important, but it’s not their main concern.
If you don’t like the idea of an R7 mk II, that’s totally up to you, but by making such a camera, Canon could position themselves as leader in a very lucrative growing market by offering products that others don’t have. And yes eventually some of the R7 buyers might even see the light (pun intended) and may decide to get a full frame camera, but by then they’ll probably already be significantly invested in RF glass…

@@christophercarlimages9003 "The kind of upgrades that are needed would catapult this camera into a completely different price point." I don't think I said anything about the price point of the R7 mk II. I'm usually fine with paying for quality gear.
"The buffer is horrendous, autofocus and IQ mediocre and ISO performance lousy." I think it would be fair to say that you don't have a high opinion of the R7. Having used the R7 since it first came out, I find your evaluation to be generally accurate about the shortcomings but overly harsh. Of all my cameras, it's not my favorite camera but, if you know how to use it you can get some amazing results despite it's shortcomings.
"Most bird photographers eventually move on to full frame because they realize the shortcomings of these crop sensor offerings". There's no perfect camera system, there's always a compromise it's either cost, weight, ISO performance,... Having shot with MFT, APS-C and full frame and having had numerous photos published nationally, I can assure you that the clients don't care about the gear you use to make the shot, the care about the story the photo conveys. Nowadays with all the fancy software that exists, high ISO shots are not as much of an issue as they use to be. I find that crop sensors cameras can be a valuable asset when shooting smaller fast moving birds or animals. The venerable Nikon D500 is a fine example of how good an APS-C camera can be.
Despite the shortcomings of the R7, Canon has proved that an APS-C camera geared towards pro-summer wildlife photographer can be a commercial success. It would be nice to see them push the R7 forward by addressing it's shortcomings like they did for the R6 and like they're rumoured to be willing to to do for the R5 and the R6 mk II. It's good to have options and choices.
Happy fourth of July and cheers mate

As someone who currently has an R7 and loves using it - its SO much fun to use, I'm currently stuck between seeing what the R5mkII is bringing to the table and getting one and waiting out 12 months to see if they make an R7mkII. Because honestly I would pay near double the current R7 price for an R7mkII that has an updated sensor with better low light/DR and autofocus and current R5 levels of rolling shutter in electronic mode even if they dropped back to 20-25fps in electronic mode instead of spending possibly AU$7000 for an R5mkII. I really just love shooting APS-C so much, sure with an R5mkII and sometimes using a 1.4x converter would provide better results overall but as a hobby shooter, mostly just uploading photos to instagram you don't need insane specs, AF and capturing the moments and making memories is the most important thing for me!

I find myself having to work harder and harder to not be negative toward Canon, and I'm waiting for official announcements. You pretty much nailed everything with your breakdown. If these rumors are substantially correct, I don't see any path forward for the R3 II. Especially at the same price point as the original R3.
I have been told that the new battery grip for the R5 is really a "cooling grip", which makes me less confident that they have actually solved the overheating problems. I can see them re-designing the R6 II to make the new grip fit both models.
I have to keep reminding myself that we don't invest in cameras, we invest in the shots that come out of them. This R6III, as rumored, would be an incredible mid-tier camera - and I don't mean that in a condescending way. I just hope they have features in their top-tier bodies that really differentiate them, and not just flashy toys.

I'd much prefer a Canon R7 mkII, than a R6 mkIII. Generally, I prefer crop sensors for reach, whether it be birds or macro (every time I use a FF camera, and I own them, I realize how much closer you need to be). The R7 is a great little camera, and I've even got to like the dial around the joystick. Resolution is good, and I like the camera in general, but it obviously has the limitation of rolling shutter, and a lower resolution EVF, which isn't too bad. But give it a stacked sensor, a decent buffer, and just a moderate EVF upgrade, and it would be a killer wildlife camera. I mean, if it was 32mp or better, had a better pre-shooting implementation, and a stacked sensor, I wouldn't be looking for anything more. I could see my days out, with what Canon has now, but welcome more.

they certainly have a lot to improve on the R7; would like to see them drop the MP and go with different shutter assembly. 26-28mp would help a lot with the horrible hi-iso performance, and more gentle curtain action would help minimize the shutter shock/# of soft images this camera produces .. This camera for me at higher frame rates creates far too many images that lose critical sharpness and become unusable. going into a shoot knowing arbitrary images will be unexplainably soft makes me hesitant and promotes overshooting, these are two variables no photog wants to add to a shoot!

Great video as always Jan. A upgrade of the r7 would have been nice, specially if they could put in a stacked sencor. Fuji have that in their high end crop camera, so Canon should be able to do that too. Specially because they make their own sencors. I am currently using the r7, and yes, the read out speed is terrible. But the quality of the files, when it's not showing it really great. I would rather prefer a 24-26mp stacked than the 32,5 that we have now. Think that could work out very well, and give it a even better low light performance.

The idea that Canon would introduce a R7II, may convince me to jump ship. It obvious to me (so far) that Nikon has no plans to release a new APSC camera anytime soon. I believe that Nikon has the best and affordable wildlife lenses in the market. A new Nikon APSC camera with similar AF to their ZF and Z6III, IBIS and better battery, would take some customer away from Sony and Canon.

Nobody wants an R7 Mk II more than I do ! I SO love / hate my R7's :) lol I don't feel like its really "the best choice" for me right now, but rather "my ONLY choice" ! I had an R5, and it was okay, but never gave me enough reach. So I 'upgraded' to the R7 two yrs ago. Great decision, and I never looked back. But the shutter roll, small buffer, no grip, URGGG ! Canon PLEASE bring the much improved R7 Mk II sooner, rather than later ! I feel like an R7 Mk II on the 200-800 will be the Holy Grail for small bird photography. I guess Canon just wants me to save my money :( Thanks Canon.

    hi Jan,
i restarted photography with the original r6.
got frustrated quite quickly with the resolution and the "poor" video features. upgraded to the r6 mk2 right when it was launched.
    delighted ever since.
I would not upgrade to the r6 mk3...
my eyes were turned to the r1 or the r5 mk2 until the resolution forecast dropped.
for my type of photography ( and not video), the only thing that would make sense for an upgrade is a resolution boost and a much faster flash sync speed.
but still .at this technological point .. I must agree with you, improving editing skills and having a mindful approach to photography itself is the best way to get better results and a much deeper relation to this ( dare I say it ) ART.

I have both versions of the R6. The MkII is clearly next level, but both bodies see equal time (pretty much). I purchased the MkII three months after its release and I’m not bothered at all about Canon coming out with another version as I’m not chasing tech. I’ve been considering getting the R5Mk2 as my next camera for its higher pixel count (I do a lot of product photography) and don’t have the budget for a Hasselblad X2D and its glass. I’d jump on an R6MkIII if it were to have something in the range of a 33mp stacked sensor, perhaps over the R5MkII.

Or they are trying to grab as much market share before other brands start producing higher mp with stacked or fast readout sensors. Then sell expensive lenses to make up for the cheap cameras, not allowing 3rd party to produce ff af RF lenses.

From what I’ve heard from the photographic community in Hong Kong, the R6 II is hugely discounted due to poor sales performance. It hasn’t sold well since its release, where as the R8 did exponentially better. People did not think the R6II at its original rrp was worth it but at its discounted price now it’s definitely a camera worth getting. I bought mine early this year at the discounted price and I’m happy with it, it’s a camera I can grow with, it’s my first full frame camera. I wouldn’t be upgrading again unless Canon comes up with a full frame 30+mp. Canon is really lacking in this area, sure hope they release one within next 2 years.

Certainly not optimal and adds another step, but most of the time works incredibly better than expected. made the decision to get 2x R6II vs 1 R5 for nearly the same money, and overall could not be happier with this decision.
where the R6III would be advantageous is if they. improve the buffer, don't like to rely on CRAW to get usable bursts. while CRAW is handy and useful in a lot of ways, i just don't like the IQ degradation beyond iso6400 or so.

Great video and information. I am about landscape and big animals (bears, wolf, moose...) I have r8 for weight/backpacking and R5 for landscape on tripod/wildlife. I am tempted buy the r7 for the effective reach - 33mpx in apsc is equivalent to 85mpx cropped on R5 with lessor a/f performance. But sometimes in wide open spaces (arctic, Yellowstone) in good light even my 600f4/1.4x is not long enough. 2x sucks. I really don't find r6ii or iii attractive (limited crop) at 24mpx (and heavier and more expensive than r8). But better a/f, bigger buffer and/or iso on r7II would likely push me over the edge, especially with my rf100-400, 200-800, 200-400f4 and 600f4.

The only downside is the need for an external card reader, while SD cards have a slot in my laptop. Nice video Jan,
You love 24MP cameras don't you?
I really like my R6ii especially paired up with my RF200-800 which for me is nearly ideal for my bird photography but I would definitely buy an R6iii if it has a stacked sensor and a CF express card as this would fix the 2 main limitations of my R6ii : rolling shutter and small buffer.
24 MP is plenty: I'm not at all interested in higher MP as this would just slow things down with huge files and I see almost no benefit.
I would also love higher frame rates in both stills and video and even better autofocus and tracking.
I would like the stills/video switch on the righthand side where it belongs so you can reach it with your right hand and the power switch can be on the left out of the way and just get rid of the idiotic lock switch entirely.
A new battery grip with the multi controller in the same place in vertical as in horizontal would be welcome too.
A useable pre capture option would be welcome too and I'd like an option to customise the shutter button so that half press would be single shot or slow frame rate and full press would be high frame rate.
The 6 series is very popular and it's in the most competitive segment of the market so I think it makes a lot of sense to have better performance than the competition. Canon replaced the original R6 after only 2 years for the same reasons.
The R7 was very disappointing with terrible performance in many ways and weird controls which probably work fine but why change what's not broken?
A new R7ii with a stacked sensor and normal canon controls like an R6 would be popular even if that made it more expensive but personally I'd never buy a crop sensor camera again.
    Cheers

As much as we’d think an R7ii is needed for the reasons you laid out, unfortunately none of the direct competitors really “beat” it outright: they all have strengths and weaknesses. The a6700 probably comes the close to being overtly superior, but even that has ergonomics, single card slot, menus, screen resolution, sensor resolution, and overheating issues that the R7 compares favorably to. As much as possible, and money dictates, since having an Xsi, I avoid replacing a camera any more often than about 5 years. Then the updates really matter. So, I won't be rushing to replace my mkII, which has been performing beautifully, any time soon (I'm nearly solely into photography, so I suppose videographers might see things differently.)

About that R6iii - would that be related to that new lens with aperture ring? Which is not supported for photography by any currently releases Canon camera?

Cześć. I would like to see an entry level full frame camera from Sony. I'm talking about a camera that will replace the A7II and A7III and will maintain a price of around $1,200-1,500.
Because at this point the only upgrade to my old A7II is to buy a used A7III at this price point.

I have a an R5 and R3. Focus performance always disappoints me after using R3 and using R5. As a sport event photographer I'm looking to have two bodies with similar performance. 2x R5's currently seems underwhelming (despite the megaPXLs) 2x R3's would be nice except I crop lots. Can't seem to find the best ground to match what I had with 2 x 5Dmk iv's.

This makes no sense. The general lack of new products in the last couple years, and the less than stellar rumors about what is coming, suggests that Canon has some real issues with R&D and/or supply chain. I was a Canon fan, and still love my R5, but won't be upgrading.
