    As a Canon shooter for decades, they have always targeted the needs of news and sports photographers first with their pro bodies. The needs of wildlife photographers are pretty far down their priority list. That seems to be continuing.

      They need speed in acquiring and speed in transfer to get it to their employers. They have big bucks to spend. Most Wildlife Photographers don’t get paid for photographs. They have a wish list but not the resources. The R6II and R5II should be more than enough for Bird Photography. BIF will always be difficult for any camera brand no matter the price.

    Agree with what you said, 45 MP is minimum for a flagship camera. If the rumored specification turns out to be true for R1, my prediction is some of the disappointed Canon users will switch to Nikon. Wake up, Canon!!!

      To me it does seem that with the tech available now we could have an R1 at 45mp, but it is due to segmenting of the lineup to give sports and news folks what they want. There are some who say that Sony did the same thing with the a9III given it is 24mp. But, there is another possible reason for the a9III being 24mp and that is the global shutter and that it may have limited Sony to 24mp. If they could have done a global shutter at 45mp would they have.?

    I was into photography in my 20’s and 30’s. Then, life became busy with career and caretaking, so personal time was non existent. I always missed photography. I began birding in 2018, and was drawn to seeing the bird photographers and gear when hiking, When Covid hit, I was in my late 50’s, and I thought I’m just going to jump back in and do wildlife photography. I thought this was a novel idea. The woman at the camera store, said, “ ya, you and thousands of other people!” During Covid, when stores and malls closed, the parks were really full, and people were drawn back to nature. I think that Canon needs to realize Covid changed things. There are many serious amateur nature photographers out there with some crazy expensive gear! I shoot Canon for the RF100-500 lens. I just wish Canon would roll the new gear out faster. I’ve got anticipation fatigue at this point!

      A lot of people have anticipation fatigue and in the end all the build up tends to lead to a let down when the gear is announced with less than what we hoped to see in it. What frustrates me is still feeling like I need to have two different Canon bodies to meet my needs in 2024. I am hoping the R5II will finally provide a fast AF, fast fps, and 45mp body for my bird photography needs.

    I fanaticize about a Canon camera and lens system built specifically for wildlife with a medium format sensor with about 50 MP so it would have high ISO/low noise, like the R3, with larger dedicated buttons for all possible auto focus scenarios, and without the extraneous menu options that don't apply to outdoor photography, and, of course, long lenses to match that come in, maybe, two camo patterns.
    It would be extraordinarily expensive for the camera, a 600mm F4 lens, and extra batteries, but then it is only a fantasy.

    Market research aside, canon has lagged behind in sensor technology, and processor technology for years now. They've made huge strides in catching up with the R5 and R3, but their competition hasn't been sitting still. I don't believe canon has the engineering and manufacturing acumen to build a high megapixel super fast stacked sensor camera. Their autofocus systems, color science, metering, and white balance are some of the best, but I don't think they well catch up on sensors and processors with this generation of upgrades. I hope I'm wrong.

      @@whistlingwingsphotography It seems to stem from the fact that Canon develops the majority of their sensors and processors in house, especially for their pro and prosumer level cameras. They are a much smaller company than Sony, and are behind Sony, and Panasonic in sensor tech and processor speed. Those two things appear to be what holds Canon back in giving us a camera like the Nikon Z9/Z8 (sony sensors) or Sony A1 with high megapixels AND blazing speed with great dynamic range. I think they'll get there, but it's always going to be years later than their main competition. By the same token, they don't have to worry about competition cutting off their access to sensors or chips.

      All very true and it may end up hurting Canon in the end if they cannot keep up tech-wise. I think it's incredible that we're still waiting for Canon to announce these new cameras in the second half of 2024. I've seen rumours that Canon has had some issues regarding the development of these bodies, which suggests to me that the company is bringing in some new features we haven't seen before. Anyway, I think the R5II will be the camera to choose for wildlife work, simply because of the extra resolution, but we've been here before. The 5 series has been higher resolution than the 1 series for a long time, so no change there. As for the R1 and Canon's market research - I know quite a few professional sport and news photographers and for them, 24 megapixels is definitely a sweet spot. I think that's the market Canon is aiming at with the R1 so yea, I can see where they're coming from, even if I'd love to see a new 1 series body with upwards of ~32 megapixels. I'm following all this very closely though. I've used Canon for more than 25 years and at the moment, I'm sorely tempted to switch to Nikon. The biggest reason for this is Nikon's lens lineup, which I think is the best out there for wildlife work, but their bodies aren't half bad either. I'll see what Canon announce this month before making this decision. Finally - for me a "professional" photographer is someone whose primary source of earned income is from their photography work, but I think it's becoming such a misused phrase that I prefer to avoid it! Thanks for another great video.

If Canon doesn’t make their EOS R5 II a competitor to these or a Nikon Z8 I maybe done with Canon since for plain old events, portraits, and sports Sony has it full covered as well and actually had fast primes at 14, 20, 24, and 35mm that Canon never bothered to make. In fact for Canon I’m still using my adapted EF 35mm f1.4 II. Admit I’m no longer interested in 24 Mpixel cameras since I don’t shoot video. I really do not think Canon thinks it has to match anybody body for body. They seem to be staying the course on what the 5 and 1 series cameras have been for years and years now. I am just not sure that course does not need some correcting. Canon should know best and time will tell. I would love to see Canon produce a R1 with 45mp and one with 24mp and see which sells better. I bet you're right about how many bird/wildlife photographers there are comapred to sports photographers. I was at Magee Marrsh BEFORE the Biggest Week and would estimate there was a million dollars worth of optics on the boardwalk the morning I was there. I'm not sure Canon is listening to these consummers. The R5 has been an amazing camera and for me, the Mark II would need to be exponentially better. They need to have an outstanding Pre-Capture or I won't even consider buying it and even then I'll wait for the reviews first. A significantly improved autofocus system-or why bother. If they've put their effort into the video system, forget it-I don't shoot much video and resent having to pay for something I don't need. As for the R1; way out of my price range.

We used to shoot 16, 18, 20, etc. megapixels and be happy, because that is all the tech could support. We are not well past that with 45-50mp being doable in the fastest bodies with few if any drawbacks. 24mp in the flagship and being the only body that can drive the larger lenses at full capability is not the way to go IMO.

    Geez, it’s not just me, huh? Is Canon going to mess this up? It’s ridiculous how they messed up the r3? What is the definition of flagship, these days? Seems like Sony changed it from what it used to be when only Canon and Nikon were competing, and that led to the r3/r1 mess. If the r1 is just 24 MP, I’m not buying it, I’d get an r6mk2 for low-light, even though I do prefer the body of the r3. I don’t want to pay r3 money for a 24MP sensor, that’s nuts. I’m expecting to buy the r5mk2, though. Surely Canon knows the r5mk2 will be its cash cow going forward, right? Can they possibly mess this up? And this notion waiting 6 months if you don’t order within the first minute of availability is nuts too! Can anyone think it makes sense to make customers wait? And yes, bird photography is very popular. You see way more people out on weekends and on tours and what not these days? Where are all the pros, especially the shorts shooters? From what I see, companies won’t treat you well if you aren’t making video, so if you are a pro and not making video you may end up using your own equipment and not being on staff. So watch out for that.
    I want the r5m2 to have the best AF possible when it streets, I’d rather it have 2 CFe cards and NO SD cards (can we finally get free of SD please?). I will never buy another Canon camera that has discernible rolling shutter, Canon!!! That is an affront to your customers to sell them a camera that produces a distorted mess of an image. Obviously we all want more DR and better low-light performance. I also expect the best ergonomics available from a non-flagship (talking r5mk2 here). And I personally think Canon needs to offer a grip that can drive those big F4 and F2.8 lenses at full speed!!! What is the logic for giving us less than full performance, especially if you are going to withhold the high MP sensor from the flagship? Think about this: the flagship is the only camera that can drive the super pricey lens well and they have the low MP sensors? Is this stupid or what? Come on, Canon!!! Stop doing stupid shit.

      The R7 is a great camera, but with several limitation when it comes to wildlife/bird photography. The main issue is the very noticeable rolling shutter when using the electronic shutter. This can be dealt with via using the mechanical shutter, but then you don't get the advantage of the fps. If the Mk. First have enjoyed some of your tours and have great shots of the belted kingfisher and the spoonbills. In each case you got us quite close and the rf100-500 lens was more than enough. The R5 did a great job and I did a lot of cropping. After a 5 month wait my RF200-800 lens arrived. As expected I like it but I don’t love it.
    Why? Well, the limited light and the weight are big problems for me. I went to North Conservation area in Sebastian to shoot scrub jays. The weather was over cast and I wish I had my RF100-500 with me. Just not enough light and the lens is heavy.
    What do I want? Just the R5 with its lighter weight and my 100-500 and if the weather is good, then the 200-800. Improvements would be to have the bracket detachable on the 200-800 and greater image stabilization and focus tracking as well as correction the over-heating issue. The R1 is something I don’t know anything about and given its size and weight I don’t want to know. Some of the things on our wish list may not be technically feasible at this time or would cost too much for most people. Their research covers a world of people of which birders are just a small part. I am sure they know what they are doing financially.

      The battery grip likely will just have two of the same batteries that are already in the current R5. It is probably an electrical nightmare to allow two different types/sizes/ voltage of battery to operate these cameras. Would be shocked if they somehow manage to engineer that. The current R5 already lowers frame rates when the battery gets below 60%. It's not nearly in the class of the R3 in any metric except IQ. Everything else is second tier.

    I'm pleasantly surprised with this video as I remember you were very adamant that the R3 was more than adequate. Canon is doing it's customers a huge disservice by not having a high megapixel pro body camera as their flagship. The R1 is more like an R3 upgrade. The new R5 MK2 is second tier in every metric and this is what Canon is pushing on bird photographers. When the R1 is released then Canon will have 5 cameras with 24mpx and one high mpx (if you consider 45 mpx high) mirrorless camera that like I said before is second tier in every metric. The Z9 is looking better every day. Big files are no more detrimental than culling redundant shots at 200fps. Give me an R1 with a stacked 45mpx sensor and a mechanical shutter at 16 fps and electronic at 30fps with a huge battery and tank like durability. This is a market that Canon is overlooking. But I now suspect their business model is high volume value cameras and gimmicky lenses. How about some competition to the Nikon PF lenses? I appreciate your input as you are a real photographer with skills and not some UA-cam "influencer" who does nothing but shill for Canon and their love affair with 24mpx!

      Hey, thanks for the input and kind words. When the R3 came out it was "adequate" with respect to AF and many other parameters. It is still the best in the hand body I have ever used. However, in this round of new bodies I really am not thrilled with the R1 staying at 24mp. I am beginning to think Canon cannot pull off a high mp flagship given tech limitations. 24mp just does not make sense and I don't buy the idea that this is what sports and media shooters demand. I still contend that if Canon brought out a 45-50mp R1 that it would sell more than a 24mp version. With regards to high volume, sure the cheaper "mass market" bodies and lenses will always be important to Canon's bottom line, but you need to do right by all the market segments in the end to really do well. A bit frustrating to say the least.

Some use the Sony a9III as an example of Sony catering to the news and sports shooters, given it is only 24mp. So Canon, for us birders - please bring out an R1S with 45 MPix. The market will be bigger than you think.

    I'm already disappointed by the rumored specs on the Canon R5 Mark II staying at 45 mp. I was hoping for a bump up to at least match the Sony A1 or A7r5. Nothing better than seeing amazing resolution on a bird--it's like a new pair of eyes. I have not bought the expensive 660 f4 yet--so if the autofocus is just on par with Sony, I may just jump over to Sony entirely. I'm tired of waiting for Canon. It just seems like the innovations are coming out earlier and quicker on Sony. And its funny--I still have an order for the Canon Rf 200-600 unfulfilled going on 7 months. Their ability to execute and deliver is also questionable. Not sure what is happening to Canon--it is definitely behind both Sony and amazingly Nikon--which was the last to mirrorless system. Sad.

    Hi Ron, I completely agree with everything you said. I'll be thoroughly disappointed if the R1 is 24 mega pixels. I currently own both the R3 and the R5; generally my wife uses the R5 and prefers it for several reasons, but very importantly because it is lighter. I've always opted for the flagship Canon model and I like having a larger camera with the larger capacity battery and better form factor. I also like the R3 because it is superior for birds in flight (minimal rolling shutter) and better autofocus. We often take bird photos together, but when I go alone and I'm not shooting birds in flight, I've find myself more often taking her R5. I simply prefer processing R5 files over R3 files; the final result is better. I've already decided, if the rumors are true, and the R1 has only 24 mega pixels, on July 17th (or whenever they are announced) I'll be buying two R5 Mark II's instead of one R5 II and one R1.

      A valid point. However, those of us who make a living from wildlife/bird photography need to be able to make more impactful images at a higher rate than in the past. The market is supersaturated with great imagery and there is no doubt all the new AF and other tech that has come and continues to come to cameras and lenses have made the market even more saturated with great imagery. For me, better tech means a higher number of impactful images. Moreover, I would love to be able to have just one camera body in the field that can do what I need it to do for all the scenarios I find myself shooting, without having to wish I had my other camera for a particular action sequence that was happen before me. Even at 700mm (500mm prime and 1.4x TC) they were small in the frame. To do them justice, I probably needed something like a 600f4 with 2x TC on a APS-C crop body. In terms of Pixel density coming from the R7 made me realize too dense photosites is for sure a drawback so as long as the R5II is kept between 45MP and ~60MP I feel that is enough for me. I hate to break it to some people, but Canon isn't going to release a R3II. NO way in hell will they undermine their top flagship R1. Let's be realistic here - a 35mp R3II? If such a beast was released, it would be crippled so as to not upstage the R1. What would be crippled? AF performance? Check. FPS? Check. sensor performance (high ISO/DR)? Check. EVF/LCD screen? Check. Don't expect dual CFExpress slots or large buffer either. It would be so gimped as to not be worth it.
    The same logic will apply to the R5II. It'll be crippled in terms of FPS, high ISO/DR, buffer, battery performance, EVF/LCD etc. Yes, the R5II will be better than the original R5 - it bloody well better be, since the R5 is near 4 years old. It Canon can't beat a 4 year old camera, then they are screwed. Oh wait, they can't be the A1...righto...
    I'm not a Canon hater, but as a long time user (EOS630 in 1989) I am entitled to voice my displeasure with their products and decisions. I reserve that right as a consumer.

It is the R1 that makes me scratch my head at 24mp if that is what it turns out to have with respect to resolution. 24mp on a flagship just seems not the way to go in todays market and if that is what Canon's market research says they should do I would like to see the numbers.

Canon has always delineated the line between its pro and amateur range of cameras (and lenses), or what I, and many others, call the CrippleHammer™. Let's be realistic this is a very true problem with all manufacturers, but Canon is significantly worse in this respect than Sony or Nikon. This is why I strongly suspect that the R5II will not be as good as many users are expecting. Again, my predictions are same EVF and rear LCD screen, 45mp BSI stacked, 40fps top in ES mode, overheating problem with 8k video mostly solved, slightly (and emphasis on the word slightly I might add) better buffer. I am hoping that they'll do dual CFexpress card slots, but I expect it'll be CFExpress/SD like the original R5. Perhaps they will do dual, but CFExpress PCIE v3 vs v4 in the R1.

      @whistlingwingsphotography  10 днів тому +1

      The R5II will be $3999 USD I am pretty sure of that. It will have one CFe and one SD slot. SD is too valuable to many shooters as they are easily obtained and read while in the field. Also two CFe cards means more heat and heat dissipation in a small body is always an issue. I think the EVF will be improved given the camera is supposed to have the eye controlled AF of the R3, but the LCD will be the same. It will def have a stacked sensor. For me the big thing is the AF performance. I want it to equal or be better than what I have in my R3. It needs to run my RF 600 f/4 to its top capability like the R3 does. If it does not, then wow. I will be disappointed.

    • @davepastern
      @davepastern 10 днів тому

      @@whistlingwingsphotography that's AUD $6000. SD is an old card format that should go the way of the Dinosaur. Ron - the AF on the R5II will *never* match the R3 - the R3 can deliver better AF performance because the bigger battery means more current and more torque to the AF motors. A smaller batter that the R5II will almost certainly use, will never have the current delivery to do this.

Now, it is possible to have 45-50mp and very fast performance all the way around and thus, I think, that is where a flagship needs to be. Sony and Nikon at least think so. Some will argue the a9III only being 24mp shows this is not true. But, it may be that Sony, with the a9III, prioritized bringing out the global shutter and could not do more than 24mp and make it work. Purchasing a flagship camera with 24 MP sensor is a waist of money in the rest of my photography hardware portfolio. I am waiting to see what is released this year so I can decide if the last 2 years of saving money plus my $80 grand in Canon hardware supports the wait, or is it time for a dump and switch brands event. Canon needs to consider ALL the other stuff we purchase for our hobby/profession. Sony pushes forward with their tech and implements within a few years, 5/6 max!
