Racing Game Jazz Fusion (& Funk)

- a dive into the world of jazz fusion in racing games, a fruitful marriage if there has ever been one! Featuring Outrun, Ridge Racer, Gran Turismo, Mario Kart, Choro Q and many, many more!
This began as a more all-purpose video game jazz fusion playlist, but with jazz fusion being such a huge presence in 80s-90s Japanese games, it felt like pairing things down to a racing games only tracklist could give the project a bit more focus. Feel free to suggest other tracks you think that fit the vibe, but please don't call me names!
This ended up being a larger project that i expected because I (foolishly) decided putting together two hours of b-roll together for this video on my own would not be a lot of work. It was!
Please like, comment and subscribe if you enjoy these mixes!
Also, I'm aware the Crazy Taxi footage is like a slideshow. I don't know why it turned out like that but this video took 11 hours to render so I think I'm just gonna say it was an Aesthetic Decision. Enjoy.

i played so many different racing games for the footage here that i honestly am not sure if i can list them all so sorry!!
i always like to call this type of jazz fusion "Circuit Jazz" because of how much it really does coincide with motorsport. love the title to this video and love the playlist
Circuit jazz is a rad fucking name i will be using that
@@freakyfunkyfluxDitto dude

Car jazz
Motor jazz

90s was simply a superior time
@@ParappatheRapper *U rappin cool!*
Sheesh dude, pretty rare to find a playlist that has so many BANGERS and no duds!
> Amy from Sonic R thumbnail
Okay let's give it a listen-
> First track is Go Go Sega Rally from the SR2 Re-Arrange Album
OHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH
I love what you did for the background for this compilation, I always love when people who make music comps on youtube take the time to have clean visuals to accompany the music. :)
It took soo long! I literally played probably like 20-30 racing games.
@@Wuss2ns Wait, you DID the visuals? Going the extra mile, I respect that so much
@@chanwisaurioHell yea. Recorded some of it off a CRT for the aesthetic, some were just screen recorded on PC.
bro pulled out the crt, BIG props 💛
@@Wuss2ns Do you remember what you played? I think I recognized some but I want to know since I've been wanting to look at older games for a while and I wanted to know what seemed like a good place to start. Also, the use of CRTs was genius, nice attention to detail.
This is a mix that I keep coming back to. It's very upbeat, it has great variation, and it's shown me several racing games that I would have never tried otherwise. Excellent work.
Glad you enjoy it! I haven't actually played a lot of the games on this soundtrack, so if any of them have especially been fun I would love to know.
That last section of Calm in the RR7 track is so clean. Such a sick change up
One of the finest track lineups ever assembled
Honestly, wow, this is astonishing
Love that there's San Fransisco Rush footage in the background, the game whos soundtrack is probably the most Anti-Jazz fusion you could get lol, great collection of songs!
those games are too goofy
@@Wuss2ns If I had to pick a favorite racing series I'd put that at #1, the fact that even in the attract screens the cars are flying all over showed how much fun it was lol
I skipped through the whole thing and was almost dissapointed there wasn't any Sega GT 2002.. saved the best for last I see.
Wow. That Alpine Racer track is funky AF. It can't be beat
fantastic mix - lots of T-Sqaure/Casiopea vibes in here, wouldn't be surprised if a few past/current members composed some of these
Woah Sanj!? You're here too!?
@@oliviapierce3194 I always knew you had good taste shoom 💅
a lot of t-square is actually in the band for MK8's music so they came full circle :)
@@mysticalsoundshowerfull circuit you mean ;)
Thank you UA-cam algo for blessing me with this crazy mix today. Cant wait to see what else this channel has in store.
Nice mix lad you got a lot of my favourites in this!
Thanks for making this. Always love finding new video game songs that bump this hard
When "Beachside" hits, it REALLY hits!!
UA-cam algorithm be hitting right, good stuff
MAN this is such a GREAT playlist!
Ohhh yes. Just what I needed for some long drives. Thank you for putting this together!
Never knew I needed this as much as I do
this is THE sickest playlist. thank you!!
This is the best playlist I've ever heard! Congrats, bro! This is awesome!
Thank you for this playlist. That first piece was a great track to start with.
Amazing! Love this kind of genre ^w^ ❤
Great playlist, I look forward to your next one :3
I will be using this playlist exclusively for driving around. Thank you so much for uploading it!
Bless your heart for starting my Friday morning off like this.
This compilation is amazing. Thank you for this. 20 minutes in and having a lot of fun.
Excellent mix. Everyone needs more racing game jazz fusion in their life, whether they know it yet, or not.
i needed this bro
Its always the racing games that have such good jams in them. Also don't know if it means anything but the b-roll was so worth it. Don't have any of my old systems anymore so I got vibe out to some guuud music and get nostalgic too lmao. Cheers man!
Auto modellista has a bouquet of tunes worthy of a check, just like racing lagoon. You could set the entire rr4 album in between on shuffle here and no one would differ lmao. Great mix.. a superb start with go go sega BTW 🔥🎉✨
How is this so freaking amazing. My ears have cant unhear this masterpiece.
Thanks for the excellent song selection!!!
Kept me entertained while building flat pack furniture today, so thank you for this. Great mix!
What a great video. The description was fun too. Thank you for your time and effort. ❤
hell yeah
Yo, the Crime Jazz Playlist owns but this? *This* is that Good Shit. Thanks for the excellent mix, chief.
Wow, so many great tunes I've never heard in my life, this is a gold mine!
YOU ARE SO COOL FOR THIS this might just be my fave music comp on youtube. This is the kind of music that scratches my brain. I got to discover so many bangers through this video. Thank you so much for this absolute blessing
fantastic playlist!!!
this is so good wtf
This mix was amazing, but I think it should have had music from Sonic R. Maybe the credits theme or the Options music could have been nice to listen since they sound more like jazz fusion
I thought about including Number One, but I feel like the sort of jazz funk house stuff Richard Jacques was doing at this time at least in that game and Metropolis Street Racer might better be saved for its own mix down the line.
Me, knowing Wusstunes from fighting game videos, not realizing she has incredible taste in music
What an amazing playlist ❤
this is my favourite genre of music, what a great playlist
Very good selection
This is so good - if you get the chance another would be amazing
Class, luxury, speed: an excellent mix.
Splendid
What a vibe
been loving this mix! plus the BG aesthetics are on point
thanks for introducing me to some real gems
honestly I think Taito was a musicians collective that made games on the side. just absolute freaks at vgm
This is awesome. Perfect for waking up and doing homework to.
been listening to your playlists and only just realized whos behind the account because of the amy picture, love both these and the smash videos keep killing it
just what i needed!
this mix deserves 1mil views its insanely good
wow! love it, thank you.
I've come back to this mix like 5 times now. Excellent mix of chill, eccentric, and bangin' tunes that are so often overlooked and underappreciated in these games while one is perusing menus, customizing cars in their virtual garages, or most obviously, driving like a lunatic. Awesome stuff.
Favorite tracks:
8:47 Turning Point (Arrange Version) - So chill, great tune. Probably going to chart this one out if there isn't already one available
28:54 Beachside - Wild changes and that MELODY, in a cute little chibi racer RPG??
59:46 Colorado - Hilarious. The Mickey's Speedway USA OST did *not* have to go this hard, but I'm so glad it did
1:30:43 Opaque Air - Dat bass. In all the tracks really, but even more so in this one. Also the string shouts and unison runs, sick.
This whole video was me trying not to put 5 choro q songs in it so im glad the one i chose still resonated! appreciate the kind words. the enthusia and auto modellista tracks are really good, shame i don't think either of those games are supposed to be particularly great. really was a time when they would throw a lot of money and effort into non-franchise racing games.
Killin man. And thanks for knowing this is jazz fusion and not… uh “jazz”
there are three kinds of jazz: lounge, crime, and fusion.
@@Wuss2nsFour! You're forgetting freeform! The type of Jazz that makes you a man, according to Patrick from Spongebob.
You went tf in on putting these tracks together. Can we get a part 50?
Sweet! 👍
1:00:00 my fav makes me feel like a caterpillar dancing on summer day
I commend you for including "Best Tone" from Driving Emotion Type-S, as I have that song in my private funk playlist. Besides that song, I have "Extra Time" from Alarm für Cobra 11: Crash Time, which I hope suits this playlist.
that is definitely a video game i have never heard of lmfao congratulations. im not sure if i would call it jazz fusion, seems more like a rock track to me, but im no arbiter of truth on this stuff.
@@Wuss2ns I'm also a little clueless when it comes to genres. I used the Cyanite AI to categorize the songs within my playlist, so of course it wasn't accurate.
Another suggestion that I have is the Drift City soundtrack. It contains a very SEGA sound at least, and a few songs do fall in the categories of jazz fusion and funk.
I’ll check it out@@alexsaffamerica
Glad to see ya saving the best for last with a Sega GT 2002 track. There's not a game series I yearn to return more than SGT, so much soul for a game often seen as a "Gran Turismo clone".
LET'S GOOOOO! MORE MUSIC FOR MY YT PLAYLIST.
what a huge amount of effort for a playlist haha, wild
i never claimed to be smart ! probably gonna try to find another project i can reuse the footage in though.
yessir that's i'm talkin about
this owns wow
Thanks for the giant logo that doesnt move. I love monitor burn-in!
Glad you like it!
There's a slight transparency to it, so the pixels do subtly change color - shouldn't burn in. Also it does start to wiggle and change colors occasionally starting close to 1:14:00 and thereafter.
15:00 drums remind of that JD Peck zildjian show
Stuff that puts me to sleep in a good way
Hand down one of the best mix out there. I love that snes retro jazz sound. Bring back so much memories. Love it !
Think you mean psone?
I can't believe ridge racer 7 came out 18 years ago
:S
I fucking love this
awesome selection, thanks !! . It's not video games but do you listen to Marcus Miller sometimes ?
Yo, Calm goes WAY too hard!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
YEAH
I love this mix of music keep up the good work. What game footage is playing in the background @ 1:24:36?
victory heat rally
When did Big Blue become Mute City....? LOL
oops lmao
shoreline from flag to flag is 💯💯💯❤ madness 🤌🤌🤌🔥💎
Fucking Gold!
heck fuckin yeah they don't make em like they used to
great driving
Face Racers did not need to go this hard
The 90s Sega games had fusion Jazz and Sony/Tecmo games had 90s/2000s DnB.
What is the game @ 1:51:30 ?
Edit: Also, legendary playlist, ty for the jams!
Driv3r GBA lol, i sped up the footage
This sounds like How It’s Made soundtrack played at 2x speed
This is amazing, but you forgot to add Auto modellista tracks
No I didn't
1:33:57
This is awesome! Does anyone know the name of the game in the background during Big Blue Arrange? 1:25:00 in?
victory heat rally, demo out now
@@Wuss2ns HELL YEAH, THX
Excellent playlist!! What's the game at 1:24:34??
Victory heat rally. Really sick indie title.
Is this Mike Stern in the beginning?? Sounds just like his tone and phrasing for a bit
Nah. I believe the Sega Rally 2 arrange album had a Casiopea guy involved. It's very much a Japanese production.
@@Wuss2ns Oh okay. Yes I have heard a bit of Mike Stern influence on a couple of their tracks. That would make sense.
1:00:20 This isn't from Gran Turismo, but anyone else getting some Gran Turismo 4 Car Wash vibes at this part??
31:22
What is the name of the game in the background video that starts here?
cruisn blast
@@mysticalsoundshower thank you!

What is the game at 14:37?
