    I encountered David on a nearly empty NY subway car at 3am on a weekend. I looked over and he saw me notice him. I think he was pleased that I contained my enthusiasm. The car came to a stop and there was rain on the platform. I handed him my umbrella and he thanked me. This is what life is. Millions upon millions of little moments that tell our stories. Jennifer is right. David was generous and kind. The world is a little less interesting without him around.

      I'm not sure what your comment means. Bowie came from a music era called the new romantics. It was based on the powder and patch era just before the Regency era in Europe.
      You can see the birth of it towards the end of Punk. The romantic era included bands such as The Cure, The Cult etc. The lead singer of The Cult is even wearing powder and patch in one of his music videos. It wasn't about gender roles. It harkened back to a classical period where men wore these clothes, make-up etc to show they were the top gentlemen of society. The Bucks, the Corinthians.
      In the 80's we see this branch into glam rock, love rock, goth. Even GnR dressed glam in the early days.
      Just as an aside, when the Regency Period arrived, the men did away with the Powder and Patch, but the tailor-made clothes continued for quite some time. Wealth was shown in the clothes, but these clothes needed to allow for horseriding etc. Bear in mind also that the women of high society also wore powdered wigs and make-up, but dresses not suits.

    • @rivertam7827
      @rivertam7827 3 роки тому +40

      @@Kathy-pr4wu if you look closely, everything in the film is foreshadowed in her bedroom at the beginning. The entire trip through the labyrinth is a manifestation of Sarah's fantasies.
      You see a newspaper clipping on her dresser of an actress who has a steamy kiss with her co-star, the implication is that her mother left her father for her co-star, who is David Bowie in the picture. It's laid out more explicitly in the novel adaptation, Sarah has a kind of crush on the actor, he takes her mother and Sarah out to dinner, and he's the first man (out adult even) to ever treat Sarah as an adult, he doesn't talk down to her and takes her thoughts and feelings seriously, he dances with her and she develops a kind of crush. Ultimately it's a coming of age story, and Sarah is grapling with moving from childhood into adulthood, and her sexual fantasies also help to manifest Jareth as we see him.
      Next time you watch it, see what you can spot in her bedroom, the Escher stairs, Ludo, the cleaners, the goblin King doll, it's all there.

    • @SavageMontreal
      @SavageMontreal 3 роки тому +19

      David IS her mother's boyfriend. Watch the tracking shot across her desk in the beginning that reveals all her belongings. That tells the whole story right there. Her mother was an actress who ran off with another man. The daughter aspires to be like her mother: to be an actress, run away from her home and responsibilities, and find a man to fall in love with. When overcome with the responsibilities of looking after her little brother, she descends into a fantasy world where she imagines what it would be like if all her dreams came true. In doing so, she realizes what she's giving up and must grapple with her desires and responsibilities as she transitions from a child to an adult. The Labyrinth, David Bowie, and all the friends she meets, are merely reflections of her subconscious as she struggles with these psychological issues. It blows me away how people can watch this movie and not understand it. It's basically a loose retelling of The Wizard Of Oz, where the moral to the story is "there's no place like home", except with the added dimension of her transition from a girl to a woman.

      I'm an American and it seems to happen to me as soon as I get off an airplane in London! Haha!! Some people are definitely more susceptible to picking up on the accents around them and Jennifer Connelly is probably the same way. I know I have to consciously fight it off and I think most of the time when I'm in England, I end up sounding very similar to Jennifer Connelly in that clip. A Londoner once even assumed I must have lived somewhere else other than America because my American accent was so "light". Nope, just a full American trying desperately not to float into your accent while I'm talking to you. 🤣

      I saw the film during the july 4th weekend. I thought it was fantastic.
      I understand that it was a box office bomb when it was initially released but that it has become a cult classic in the intervening years. Imho it deserves a lot of acclaim. I think it has elements of old school fairy tales in it ( im not alone in having this idea - several reviewers thought this also.)....and jungian/freudian undertones, too. I bet it was misunderstood when it was first released. I think Connelly and Bowie turn in great performances .
      Caveat - i wdnt let kids under 10 see it. This film might induce some nightmares in grade school kids who are a little immature.
