  • The alto trombone plays a unique part in the trombone family, past and present, but is not something heard or talked about on a regular basis! It seemed only right that it get it's own series of videos talking about it's history and how to get started playing it! In this video I talk a bit about the history of the alto trombone; keep an eye out for our next video when we get started playing!

I saw a video recently of a much older Stokowski beginning a rehearsal. A particular piece was started and after a spell he stopped the orchestra. During his comments he then called out to the principal trombonist and asked if he had an alto instead. He said he did. Stokowski was all about getting things right as much as possible and nuance of sound was as important as anything else in the music. [By the way, the Oliver Daniel book about Stokowski is out of this world! His research was incredible.]

Thanks for watching! I am a big proponent of using the right instrument for the right sound and if it’s good enough for Stokowski it’s good enough for me ;)

I'm a bass player primarily, but I've been wanting to branch out. I was considering tenor/alto horn, how does alto Trombone compare? I know it's apples to oranges, but could it double there?

Thank you Keith. Your videos are excellent. Will you be demonstrating the alto trombone you are holding? Is it the Schmitt Holmeier horn?
    Thanks again.

I will be doing some demoing/an intro to starting on alto in my next alto video (coming soon!) The alto I am holding (and will be using) is our Lake City ATB415 (new name, same model as the previous S Custom Kohlmiere)!

I am playing one of our Lake City alto trombones (shop.schmittmusic.com/lake-city-415-alto-trombone/); I worked with our brass manufacturer to create what I consider to be a great playing alto, priced accessibly to provide a solid intermediate-level alto. Please feel free to reply or email me at tromboneshop@schmittmusic.com if you would like to chat further! Thanks for watching!

Not a huge deal. The big TV networks are all having their own issues every day now.
