LEAD ARM STRAIGHT OR BENT?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 лип 2022
- Over the years a huge problem that I keep seeing with my students is them trying to keep the lead arm straight. I am here to tell you to never force the lead arm straight with irons & driver. Instead, keep it slightly bent with both irons & driver.
When people force this lead arm straight, as opposed to slightly bent, it locks up not only the arm (so they keep hitting with the arms instead of the body) but they also lock their wrists which slows down the club losing you distance with all clubs.
I know there are pros who keep the lead arm straight but there are lots that keep it slightly bent it too. I like to refer the lead arm as being extended not locked.
In this tip, I show you a drill you can be doing with both irons and driver so you can decide if you want to keep the lead arm straight or bent. Do this drill daily so you get used to it. Once you do you will start hitting the golf ball with effortless power so the decision should be quite easy for you to make.

I was skeptical at first. I was governed by the image, from Hogan's book, of both arms extended & locked. Then I tried this. I am less tense at address, my swing became free flowing, my wrists felt looser & hit the ball consistently better. All I can say now is WOW & holy cow!!
Very good. See you tried something different and got a great result. I get that people try to force the arm straight. I see it daily but for most this only leads to tightness. Keep at it.
Thanks Paul this is what I used to do, and have been trying for years to get a straight right arm ( I’m a lefty). This really gives me the green light to break the arm and let ER rip. His came at a time when I needed your advice. Thanks for simple straight, consistent advice! Great job.
Yeah, obviously not working for you. This will be a game changer. Glad you liked it. Thanks.
This is one of my favorite videos of your's ...Freed me up and loosen my swing so much. Also if you watch closely you see the wrist hing and the lower body movement...Great stuff Paul...You have made golf fun for me again. Thanks
Glad you liked it. This is holding so many people back. Keep up the good work.
DON'T WE JUST LOVE THE SIMPLICITY OF PAUL'S INSTRUCTION!!!
I do. Oh, yeah I am PW. I don't count.
I APPRECIATE YOUR TEACHINGS....THE NATURAL-NESS OF A GOLF SWING.
Another great tip Paul. What was really cool was seeing your swing in slow motion. You knew that by allowing us to see your swing tip in slow motion, no one could possibly argue that it didn't produce lag because it most definitely did, and it was right there for all of us to see. Another super tip. Well done Paul, and thanks.
Glad you liked it. This one is super important. So many people trying to force that arm straight which is tightening them up. Yes, lag is not an issue. In fact, it's even easier to get it because you need loose wrists to get lag.
Your overall theme of passive arms and relaxed loose swing is the reason I’m still playing golf....thank you
Very good. You should be able to play forever doing this.
BEST VIDEO I HAVE SEEN IN YEARSSSSSSSSS IN UA-cam... YOU BROUGHT ME BACK TO EASE... I AM ALWAYS SO UPTIGHT... SIMPLE AND VERY EFFICIENT TIPS... LOVE IT.
Glad you liked it. Thanks. Need to loosen up. Too many people are way too tight just whacking away hoping one day it will come. 30 years later they are still hoping.
This drill is GOLD. I saw it in one of your previous videos as a lag drill. I wasn’t chasing lag, so only gave it a couple tries. This time, after putting in just a few minutes, I was amazed at how many lessons this drill holds if you take the time to listen to what it tells you. Balance, How to start the downswing, How to add power with feet / legs, Feeling and accentuating centrifugal force, etc. Anyone considering the purchase of a rope-drill swing aid should save their money & do this. Excellent work Paul.
It sure is. So many people out there way too tight yet they do nothing to fix it. Why not try something new and not be all stiff. As you see it doesn't take long but it feels weird at first. Keep doing it until you get used to it then you can finally get the arms turn off and use the body for power.
I love the way a relaxed lead arm feels at address. Centrifugal force should straighten it out naturally as the swing progresses toward impact. @@paulwilsongolf
Thank you so much for sharing this!! Took this concept to the range, huge difference!!
Glad it helped! This is going to help a ton of people. I can feel it.
I have been enjoying years and years of of effortless swing golf. Thank you for that.
I have been experimenting lately with the straight arm in my backswing. This video saved my game. Again, you are my go to thought.
I always tell friends to loosen up. The ball goes so much further and straighter.
Thank you, Thank you, thank you!
So glad you are doing well and still doing it. Great feeling isn't it? Yes, do not straighten that arm. This is a good way to wreck your swing. If you need to fix the occasional bad shot or more distance let me know what it is and I can get you there.
This is truely amazing. Your channel brings back the fun of golf. Great drill.
Glad you enjoy it! Just got to get people doing things a little different (looser). If they do their whole game changes and more fun enters the picture.
Love your videos! Keep up the excellent work, Paul.
Glad you like them! Thanks for your support.
Paul, I've watched ALOT of golf videos, instructional and otherwise...You BY FAR are the best! Sure wish I lived closer. THANK YOU!
Thanks so much. I appreciate the support.
You are absolutely right 👍
I have added 30 yards to my drive
I'm trying to get used to doing this now on a regular basis instead of using the half swing method it's a great shot too when I hit it nice and straight ball is rolling forward no side spin thanks for all you do Paul you're a great coach.💪💪
Glad you are trying it. Too many people are trying to lock that arm which is tightening everything up. Looser = faster. Keep at it.
Game changer for me. I’ve never had such consistent ball striking. Thanks.
Great to hear! Too many people forcing this arm straight which is locking them up. Stay loose!
Never heard this mentioned before in any vids I have seen thus far but, to be fair, I only started my journey into golf a couple months ago. My downward transition sucks so am excited to test this tip out. Thanks for the great vids... they have been a huge help.
Glad you found me and glad you like the tips. Simple is the key. You just need the right thoughts in transition. Too many people are just hitting. Changing this thought to legs and hips alone will give you a chance to hit perfect shots because then you are at least doing what pros are doing. Here is the most popular and easiest trigger. Start with this until you get the body leading:

You may not realize how lucky you are to have found Paul this early on your golfing path. I struggled for decades with the wrong info. at least wrong for me. You might also consider getting his Body Swing course, it’s presented in a logical sequence & quite complete. A really solid investment in your game. Good luck.
I can’t wait to try out this tip! Thanks Paul!
For sure. Extended but not locked. Let us know how you do.
Good stuff as always Paul. As a "straight armer", I'm looking forward to taking this to the range. Your relaxed wrist tips have already helped me a ton. Thanks!
Thanks. Definitely give it a try and see what happens. If the loose wrists helped the elbow may too.
Thanks Paul, this is the exact answer to the question I asked a couple of weeks ago and you said this vid was coming up. As someone who has been constantly told to keep the arm straight this could so be a game changer for me. Cannot wait to go and practice this to try and get a looser feeling in my swing. Please keep the great content coming.
Glad you saw this one. This is so important. I really think this is one of the main things holding people back. This will keep everyone loose. Watch what happens if everyone starts doing that.
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks again, I was wondering after practicing this inside this afternoon (winter here in Tasmania) could you do a session on how weight transfer should happen and how to initiate the downswing when the club is sitting on your neck. If you have already done this I must have missed it. Again, many thanks for your great instruction, love the tips and drills.
This is what I have on weight shift so far:

There are just so many ways these days to make the shift. As usual they are making this way too complicated. The latest is to recenter as you start down. They watch pros in slow mo then see the move to the left at the top before coming down. The problem is you have a millisecond to do this. So you get the average player to do this and they come way over the top. Here is my take on recentering:
ua-cam.com/video/GhKr6Y8NHGo/v-deo.html
You already know how to make the shift if you have thrown a ball. Just throw some balls out in front to get the feeling of what to do then apply this feeling:
ua-cam.com/video/7z5eUcSwlSk/v-deo.html
That should keep you busy. Glad you are doing swings indoors. This is what it takes.
Great tip! Love the drill! Thanks again.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
So I took a lesson with you last December and have been improving, but could never really unlock the "loose arms/use the body" idea. This video finally did it. I went to the range, relaxed my arms at the top of my backswing rather than keeping my lead arm straight, fired by body, and presto: my 230 drives became 250 and 260 drives and my 200 3 wood became a 215 3 wood. It is finally clicking thanks to you and this video. I'm still hooking the ball a little bit, but I think that just means turning the hips quicker, making sure aim is set, and hitting my follow-thru keys more and I'll be there (I hope).
Great to hear from you. So you are who I was thinking about as I shot this tip. I did say tons of my students are trying to force this arm straight. That's great that this made it click. This is a huge breakthrough. As you see anyone can get distance if they loosen up. For you see the good in the hooks (half right). Yes, fire the hips quicker. As you do, watch your ball. It will tell you how much hips you need. Then memorize it for the future. Keep at it.
Thanks, I have very bent arms when fully extended, about 145° vs. a straight 180° and your video makes me feel much better, as I have been trying to fully extend and having tight locked arms. Now I will relax and forget about this problem, thanks again.
Exactly. It doesn't matter and as you see when you force them straight it tightens everything up. Think of a weight on a string. It's flexible. If you started to twirl the weight the string would stretch out 100% of the time. So get to the top. See the whole club as a weight and arms as string. Start your body and let the weight of the club pull your arms out. You will know you're doing it because the club will feel unmistakably heavy when you swing it. Your arms are only so long so if the club stretches them out each time it will repeat. If you want more distance you fire your body harder never hitting anything.
Great advice! I'm doing it and it has made me relax.
Very good. Relax. I like it
Awesome tip, rehabbing off my motorcycle accident, my right shoulder is 90 percent when my right leg is given a go by my surgeon still waiting for skin graft but in the meantime watching your videos keep me thinking positive
Glad you are still watching and absorbing the info. Just visualize it so you know exactly what to do once you are ready. Start off with practice swings. I keep telling everyone this the fastest way to get it.
Thanks for sharing another great tip Paul.
You are very welcome
Wonderfull, I have strikes like never before, thanks so much !!
Glad it helped!
This tip is so good, thank you !
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
Thank you a lot for this video Paul, I've been trying to keep my arm straight for a while but always felt horrible trying to hit the ball. recently trying to keep my arm loose and allowing it the bend I've been hitting so much better! Thank you again Paul!
Glad you found this one. Keeping that arm perfectly straight has and is wrecking so many swings. Extended but not locked.
Love this video. Thank You. Where have you been all my golfing life.
Glad you enjoyed it. I've been around for over 32 years now. So glad you found me.
Paul..... although I have too many swing thoughts in my head on the course, you have helped me shave 10 strokes off my score this year alone. Thanks much.
Very good. Got to clear your mind. I know there is a lot of stuff. So try to pick out one or two things and master them then move on. On course do this: ua-cam.com/video/d9qjTrotjpk/v-deo.html
What a fantastic lesson, thank you!
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
PPS. Just watched your free sample vid about the grip. I'm on it!
Very good. It all starts with the grip and set up.
Paul, I was once a decent golfer, but admittedly a straight armer. I had a back injury involving surgery and now cannot swing like that. Big bummer to my golf game. I have found your videos and think your system may save me. My back is relaxed along with my arms which I’m beginning to learn how to break. I’m actually seeing more swing speed doing things your way. I don’t know why I ever used to swing so stiff armed. Thanks!
I don't see why it's a bummer to not keep your arm straight at the top. I think you can take it to an even higher level if you break it. Some of the best golfers of all time broke the arm at the top, Nicklaus, Watson, Couples, Count Yogi and of course the guy who's dominating right now Scottie Scheffler. Pretty good golfers on that list. You see how relaxed it is which a good thing and no pain will allow you to swing like this forever. I have seen countless seniors over the years trying to keep it straight (because the were told to) and hit the ball nowhere. It doesn't take long to learn it so stick with it and certainly don't see it as a disadvantage.
Hi Paul… just looked at Scottie and not even the analyst are picking up the bend in the elbow. The more I think about it the more it makes sense. Great drill to get you there will try it tomorrow with teed up 7I. For me it gives a little extra time at the top of the swing to really let the legs use the ground.
Sorry I overlooked this one. Yes, he is severely bent and guess who's dominating the tour? Truly mind boggling people keep telling people to force this arm straight. That is guaranteed to wreck your golf swing unless of course you are a kid or super flexible.
Great Drill Paul!
Thanks so much.
Great! The straight arm thing has been a real problem for me (along with others it seems). Your drill is going on my practice list. That is very helpful.
For sure. So many others do this too and it locks them up. If you learned it as a kid you can get away with it but most started as adults. Keep at it and you will see a huge difference.
Genius Paul, you help me a lot!! Grettings from Buenos Aires.. Argentina
Glad you liked this one. So many people are way too tight in their backswing which is locking their arms and wrists. Stay loose!
Wow! Thank you so much Paul!
My pleasure!
I love this video. I have a lot of chest muscle and can’t keep my left arm straight and torque to a full swing with it. I have been playing forcing my left arm straight for months and I feel so unatural and robotic. I appreciate you Paul. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I know exactly the body type because this is me too. Allow it to bend a little and you are fine. I refer to it as extended not locked. Loosen up and it's a game changer. Too many people trying to force this arm too straight which locks everything up.
This sounds like something I need to practice, now. I have been using the single plane swing for the past 3 years and my game has improved tremendously, then suddenly went south, big time and I can't figure it out. Will try this today.
Well, what I teach is a little different to singled plane but not that far off. You probably started hitting solely with arms. This is typically what happens. So give this a try. It will loosen you up for sure. Stiff lead are tightens everything up.
Paul, there's a lot of BS coaching out there who only coach the straight arm and injuries relate to it ( golfer elbow anyone ?) . This is refreshing and spot on. Relaxing and letting your body make the athletic movement is what we should all be focusing on, not trying to be like Dustin johnson...
I know exactly what is out there. I am going to keep doing what I do. I know the results I get. Glad you are with me.
Watched my mate let his arms fold in the back swing with the driver and I could never understand how he appeared to be doing it all wrong but getting massive distance . You’ve just answered it perfectly.thank you
Exactly. Glad you see it. You do not have to keep this arm straight. This is probably ruining 50% of golf swings. Give it a try. Extended but not locked.
Great tip. Thanks 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
This solves a problem for me.Thanks
Very good.
Great stuff as usual! Any chance on you making a video about aiming tips for hitting a fade or draw off of the tee. I have been working on your “Body Swing” with good success. I just would like a video on how to start applying it better during a round. Thanks for the content!
I notice that as I practice your basic drills I am hitting a slight draw during practice sessions. That said; you prefer to hit a fade, and I have listened to why you like that flight. Before trying your training methods I normally hit a slight fade, not a slice. I mentally struggle off the tee while playing because the drills are slight draws and I am a natural fader of the ball. I would like see some additional content on how to use your techniques for fading the ball. My wrists are looser now but I don’t think I am wired to play a draw comfortably off of the tee. Any comment is appreciated. Thank you for your content.
Thanks for the support. Glad you are working on it and seeing results.

I prefer straight or falling right (fade) once you get it. If you are drawing it and want the fade then check your grip (neutral). Don't work on rolling it. Fire the lower body. Alignment is slightly left with the face aimed where you want the ball to end up (this means it is preset slightly open). If you aim left ... swing left. The ball will fade due to the face aimed at the target which is open to where you are swinging.
Thx for sharing Paul. Heading to Scottsdale as we speak. Got your videos downloaded , I’ll be watching on flight!!! Would give anything to get off tee box, thx again.
Very good. In the fix your own swing section (last chapter and last videos) that people seem to overlook there are 2 drills. You need to master those. Then watch your ball and it will tell you which drill you need to apply. For driver get step 1 and hook every shot. Once you can do that move to step 2 body to straighten it out. Met a guy on the range. Been to numerous top top top teachers. I had him killing it in 10 mins. You can do it too. Just follow those 2 drills.
@@paulwilsongolf Thx again, your wiliness to help people get better and have fun golfing is unmatched.
Wow! This is so much easier and more comfortable than forcing my left elbow to stay straight. My elbow was hurting because of all the forces I was putting to straighten it
Very good. So glad you watched this one. This is going to help a lot of people who are doing the same thing. If you are in pain you are doing it wrong.
I listened to this at work then when I finished I took it to the course and literally my first drive 250 yds just by breaking my left arm .With my irons I was Able to make a divot and lose no distance and in fact gained it.I have always tried to pick the ball cleanly but now I will carry on with this new method thx
Very good. Trying to keep that arm straight is really holding a lot of people back. Glad you hit some good ones. Just remember to not break it too much.
I felt that I was failing by not managing to keep my left arm straight, and depriving myself of power. Thank you for this reassurance.
Yep. Huge problem out there. Hopefully, this gets people on track. So many of my students keep trying to do this and are locked. How could they ever think of hitting the ball anywhere like that. Loose is the key.
I'm came here to improve my two-handed tennis 🎾 backhand. great video! thanks
Fantastic! I should teach tennis.
Great video Paul
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
Golf must simple .. thank you sir for sharing this..
Simple is the key. Make this complicated and you will never get it.
Wow, thanks Paul, greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽
Nice to meet you! I had a few students come for lessons this year from Mexico. There is some good golf there.
Great teaching
Thanks so much. I appreciate it.
I was on the range today and I took video of myself. The 1st thing I noticed was how much I was bending my arm on the backswing, in as much as I thought I was improving in that area. I even showed the video to my instructor, and he agreed that I should stop my backswing at that point, as my arm starts bending, and just begin my downswing from there. But here I come across your video, and it's just the opposite. But what you are saying seems to make sense as well.
You want to extended but not locked. You are bending it too much. Try it. Locking your arms is going to get you nowhere.
I was researching this yesterday and bam 💥, you have a video about today. The universe is listening
For sure. Funny how that happens sometimes.
sooooo happy I can stop trying to lock my lead arm!!!! tysm!!!❤
For sure. This forcing the arm straight is hurting a lot of swings.
I am 18 months in to golf. A month ago I went right back to basics and spent a week getting the right grip for me sorted out then linking it up with how much to turn my belt buckle to hit straight. Now into backswing. This video is a great one for people like me who were trying to rigorously keep the L shape.
Very good. Glad you are working on the fundamentals. Most people just blow past them and wonder why they aren't playing great.

@@paulwilsongolf It has made my golf game so much better!
I spent years trying to keep the arm straight as well and have been trying to introduce some ground force work. For me it is impossible to use the ground without bending the elbow. Im not super flexible and the stiffer that lead arm the fatter my shots get OR i save them last minute, flip and hit super thin or pop my irons 1000 ft in the air and about 40yds shorter than normal. This video is great man. Its the only way i can keep my arms softer and alleviate my horrible hit impulse some ha
The slow motion @5:45 really helps demonstrate how much lag is generated by that drill. I will be trying this next time I get to the driving range.
Very good. Too many people trying to keep that arm too stiff which is locking everything up and getting them to hit with the arms. Let it bend a little. It's a new different feeling but once you try it you will never want to force it straight again.
I can't believe it! I didn't believe you when I watched this video. I'm saying to myself "this looks more like a baseball swing, no way". Sure enough, every club I hit by breaking my arm at the top of my swing was flush! It feels weird but it's amazing it works almost every time! Thank you, thank you!
Glad you are seeing results. Keep doing it but don't bend it too much. Extended but not locked is what I say.
Another 😳moment. You’ve changed not only my game but my life. I spent years of my golf life one swing away from rage. I hated the game but I was obsessed with it. Since I’ve started watching your videos I’m enjoying myself on the course or hitting balls into my pasture. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…thanks Paul.
That's great. Love hearing it. You definitely need to keep hearing what I am saying. Whatever you have worked on I have done it 10 times over. Keep in mind I have been working on this daily as opposed to once or twice a week. All day every day trying to get my swing back for over 10 years (after I took lessons and lost my swing). See it in simple terms. Keep at it and let me know if you have issues.
Great video. Thanks for setting us straight on this. I bend my arm a little on the top of my back swing. I'm 64 y.o. now and have lost some distance from the driver to my wedges. My swing path is somewhat upright and while I have experimented with a flatter swing plane I just cannot hit the ball consistently. Any tips for a 64 y.o. upright swinger shooting in the low eighties? When I was a young buck I held a consistent 5 handicap. My drives are down to about 230 yards when I used to hit 285 to 300 with a wooden driver.
I wouldn't change from the upright. I like this type of swing over flat. Works great for many of the greatest of all time. Typically someone in your shoes took a break from golf. When they came back they started hitting with arms. This tightened them up which slows down the clubhead speed. So you really need to get loosening up the arms and wrists first. This is where the speed comes from. You get that then you add body rotation because your arms have to be connected to your body to make them move. I have fixed countless people in this situation and it's easy because they have used their body in the past. I just need to get them using it again. The problem is when the person has never used the body so they are way harder to fix.
So do this first:
ua-cam.com/video/M868QsTlGt4/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/p4vASmOzkPg/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/N-nGM6yN790/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/yHEv7G9Z5-0/v-deo.html
Get the ball hooking and loose the wrists. Once you can do that you then start firing the lower body harder/quicker/faster to straighten it out. Not sure what your downswing trigger is but something in your legs and hips you use to hit the ball. As you fire the lower you watch your ball. Start off slowly switching to the legs and hips. When you fire the first time you want to get the ball to go from a 30-50 yard pull hook to 10-20. This shows you that firing the legs is straightening it out. If you fire too hard and blow it right this is too hard. You need to go back to rolling again. Ideally, you keep firing more and more until the ball goes dead straight. Once it does, you memorize this feeling and keep firing this hard forever.
I would be doing lots of swings up in the air firing the lower and listening to the swoosh making it swoosh faster and faster with the arms totally relaxed. This will ingrain the feeling of using the legs and hips for power. So there you go. You now have you plan. Within a few practice sessions 250 should be a no brainer.
@@paulwilsongolf Thank you so much for your insights. I will study your videos and work on the points you make. I will let you know if I gain some distance.
Wow!! Great news!! Thanks
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
Pay attention, people, because he did it again. Super video. A beginning golfer would do well to start with this pro and stick with him. He'll have you playing good golf quicker than anyone. Because when you learn to hit the ball properly with your body and keep those worthless arms entirely out of the swing, you'll be more than halfway there!
Well said! Glad you liked this one. Super important.
Wow this really works! I just went and did this drill in my living room hitting on a divot board and I was making perfect divots and there was actually a lot of speed. Can't wait to hit some balls like this. I am one of those guys trying to keep my arm straight and this caused so much tension in the arms and wrists. Good for maybe chipping but not full shots.
It sure does. Tightness equals no divots. I did a tip on it there:
ua-cam.com/video/_ji_zykZlY8/v-deo.html
Give it a try and let us know how you do. I will tell you right now this is a game changer. Chipping yes. Full swing no.
@@paulwilsongolf just wanted to let you know I took this drill to the golf range and wow what a difference. Especially with my woods and driver i was hitting at least 20-40 yards further and the weirdest thing is that I felt like I was barely swinging. Before I know my wrists and arms were too rigid. Now they are much looser and the club just snaps through like a whip now and the ball just goes. Awesome! Thanks man
Very good. That is the correct feeling. See how you need to do something new to get a different result. Stay loose!
Hello Paul! First off, you are an amazing golf coach. I have become a better golfer from your videos! I do my best to loosen my swing and I went from shooting 58-59 on 9 holes in April to now shooting 44-46 in July with only playing once a week. I’d honestly have a lower score if my short game was better. I’ll keep looking for more videos from you on that front. This was also a great video. Thank you! I have a question though. I use a 10 finger grip and I have a hard time hinging my wrist with this grip. I have tried interlock and overlap grips and my hands just hurt in these positions. Do you have any videos on 10 finger or baseball grips and using your hinge technique? I feel like when I go to hinge, I have to release part of my right hands palm to get that proper position and I don’t feel like that’s right. Any links to your site or videos I could follow?
Thanks for the kind words and support. I appreciate it. I don't have videos on this grip specifically. I don't like it but I have let a few people get away with doing it. Just need to position the hands I show in my neutral grip video though. Typically when people do a 10 finger they have a super strong right hand. Need this hand on top.
ua-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/v-deo.html
With this grip your wrists should be able to hinge. Watch this too:
ua-cam.com/video/lWEhXEGSgRE/v-deo.html
Also, you need to be doing daily practice swings at home working on this stuff. Do that and you can get it lower in no time.
Thank you very much, Sir.
You are most welcome
Love the tip Paul. I've played with letting my left arm bend for a long time, but there's a couple things about it that I wonder about. 1. I tend to not grip the club firm, if at all (I let the grip just sit in my hands - I'm lazy I think), as part of the bend, and I think I'm getting sloppy and losing control. Maybe you can direct me to one of your vids that addresses that kind of thing. 2. With the bent left arm, my wrist cups a lot at the top and I cross over quite a bit at the top - sometimes I see my club in my left eye past parallel, kinda like John Daly. Any remedies for those (if needed). Thanks
You need a secure grip with loose wrists. Follow this one:
ua-cam.com/video/Z8K3Gctkz7A/v-deo.html
To stop the overcupping you need the club running more across your left palm. Follow my neutral grip tip and I talk about it. Impossible to overcup if you hold it the way I suggest. It is not super bent. It is extended but not locked. So extend it and it shouldn't be too long.
Great video and great explanation. One question: My nemesis is a flat swing. When I took this idea to the range, relaxing the arms, I decided to take it as far back, which caused my club to cross the line---and gave me an upright swing! Result: hammering the ball without straining. Is this ok? To cross the line? It seems to give me more easy power with a longer swing arc. Please advise.
Glad you don't want to do the flat swing. It hits it nowhere. So you need the lead arm slightly above the shoulder plane at the top. I don't mind slightly across the line. This is a more powerful position. This is relative to the left hand position at 3/4 back. At this point you need the left hand off the right armpit. Inside the armpit and you will cross. Outside you will be laid off. Ideally down the line or slightly across would be ideal. Watch:

Hi Paul... finished a practice session firstly with the drill and then using it as a pre-shot. Brilliant, firstly, you can really feel the lower body working the swing and the "snap" is so much easier to achieve and two, the ball is straight or with a slight draw. Every time I watch this vlog another improvement is seen. For example if your grip is wrong or you are being a bet lazy this drill tells you immediately. For the first time I am looking forward to not just taking this to the practice round but also into my weekly roll-up on Tuesday...a watershed moment.
Would you believe the problem I have is that the range balls are cold and hard and actually hurt my hands if I get things wrong as I don't wear a glove once warmed up. The impact with my competition ball is so pure it has an effect on my playing partners...great for Match Play and playing with handicapped players. I am at a Calaway club fitting session next Wednesday any advice on clubs?
Glad you are getting it. This tip is huge. So many people are forcing this arm straight which is making them too tight.
Clubs - you need to love the look of it as well as the sound. You need to do the proper set up so they are the right lie angle. Then of course you need the right shaft. You do not want any negatives. If you don't like something about the club DO NOT buy it. I guarantee it will be sitting in your closet in a month. You have to think that the clubs you are getting are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Confidence is key. Any top of the line clubs are great. It's personal preference then a proper fitting.
I’ve given up trying to straighten mine. Went to the range today and just swung long and bent it properly. Focused on ball contact. Best session I’ve ever had. 👍
That's great. Keep at it.
Just did this at the range and just about the only time I hit the ball pure was when I was doing this drill. I will just have to keep with it and slowly move it out to a "straighter" left arm. Not that it matters as long as I'm getting good contact.
Very good. So glad you tried it. Keep at it. Sounds like you are on track.
Thanks for your tips Paul. As a beginner, this really helped me. Anyway is there any power difference if we straight or bend or left arm ?
Well, if you have been forcing it straight and locking your wrists then you allow it to bend a little there is a huge power difference. Most students who come to me are forcing it straight because they have been told to do that. This gets them totally locked. Need to loosen the arms and especially the wrists. Do that and you get serious power with no effort.
Superb as always Paul. Still trying to eliminate some chicken wing on follow-through. To repeat now for umpteenth time, practice swing perfect, then 2 seconds later when hitting ball some chicken swing. I have been calling myself an idiot the past 2 months since I have have been working with driver. Every time at the golf range I tell myself that I cannot continue to be an idiot when hitting ball. Yet constantly an idiot. Regarding distance, still somewhere between 230 and 250 yards when ball hit perfectly, albeit with some chicken swing. No need for reference to other of your videos here. I have watched most of them. My swing is completely loose. Somehow swing when hitting ball lacks an adequate hip turn. Not bad, but not good enough. I am convinced that I will arrive at perfect swing when hitting the ball. However, the chicken swing, albeit now now relatively small, is forced by whatever absurd mental processing that forces the same idiocy.
Love it. I feel like I control club better without arm straight
Very good. Too many people forcing this arm straight which locks them up. Stay loose!
Wow...i definitely fall in the camp of trying to force my right arm straight. I have been fighting a loss of power after getting back into golf recently after a 4 year hiatus. Part of it is a lack of flexibility I believe (which I am working on) and the rest is trying to hit the ball with all arms. I figured that if I got a wide back swing and kept my arm as straight as possible that would translate to more club head speed ....but I am starting to realize after watching some of your content that I am way too tense and tight through the arms and shoulders trying to "hit" the ball. Can't wait to get back to the range to try this more loose approach. Funny thing is, years ago I was at the range one evening and just started puring every shot. I remember feeling like I was swinging so loose and easy and feeling the club head. I was so excited I called a friend and told him i had "figured it out" Of course you know what happened...next time we played I couldn't make a shot lol. I have always wanted to find that swing again and what you are saying makes a lot of sense. Thanks
So glad you found this tip. Yes, it's good too be wide but don't force it. As you see that doesn't give you more power. The pros who have it straight learned that as kids so they can do it as adults. Funny, you had the feeling. You couldn't get it back because you were thinking of distance and trying to hit it that long again. All you had to do was be super loose. Well, now you know. Keep at it and they will be long and straight forever.
@@paulwilsongolf hopefully heading to the range to work on this today. Thanks very much for posting these videos and for your reply!
Paul.....I have a slightly bent lead arm at top of backswing, good shoulder rotation, hands are head high. My problem is not getting the lead arm straight at impact (chicken wing), with inconsistent contact and loss of power.
Here you go. Fix that an you take you whole game to a new level.

Man I tried this a crushed my 4 iron and I never got my 4 iron. Great tips I can’t wait to get out there!
Very good. This is going to help so many people.
Ok Paul. My issue is, due to an injury and a titanium plate in my elbow, I cannot completely straighten my left (lead) arm. I'm right handed. This is making it incredibly difficult to consistently shallow my swing and compress the ball basically from my 7 iron up to my 4 iron. What drills would you recommend to help with this?
You are making more out of it than what it is. If you can't straighten it that doesn't matter because at much as YOU can straighten it is YOUR maximum. The problem is when people can straighten yet they hit it with the arm bent that is a problem. So you need to look up Calvin Peete. Arguably the most consistent golfer of all time. Bent arm due to an injury. He had no issue. So I wouldn't even be seeing this as a negative. The clubs you are having trouble with are getting longer so you are hitting with the arms. Plus you are probably too tilted. Watch:
ua-cam.com/video/gJOq_LO6oRg/v-deo.html
Then it's no hitting. Just keep the arms relaxed and wrists super loose to they hinge and rehinge. Do the wrist drills:

Paul....love your videos. Question? I’m a righty, How come if my left elbow isn’t locked at the top I hook my shots? If I lock it they go straight. Your videos have helped tremendously as I’m hitting solid shots with every club in the bag.
Thanks for the support. I appreciate it. You are the prefect example of why this is important. You have a strong grip. You bend the elbow a little which loosens you up. Strong grip + loose wrists = hook. I did 2 tips on this here:
ua-cam.com/video/ZGayCM8bJ6c/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/Hh_uALjl_jk/v-deo.html
Learn the neutral grip here:
ua-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/v-deo.html
@@paulwilsongolf thanks Paul for your reply. Actually I have a weak grip and I always have had a weak grip and if I make it strong the hooks are worse. I played last Saturday where pulls and pull hooks ruined my round. My shoulder turn isn’t the greatest could that be the problem? Any advice?
Weak grip and hooking. Unusual. You have to be shutting the face somewhere. Is the face shut at set up? Do you have a bowed lead wrist at the top of the backswing. ua-cam.com/video/uRWI8Mhnsa8/v-deo.html Either that or you are changing the grip to strong somewhere in your swing and you don't realize it. This is what I did for years. Could have sworn my grip was neutral yet just as I took it back I changed it to strong. So check those things. The pull/pull hook is you hitting with the arms. This is leaning you forward in the downswing instead of your body tilting back. Watch:

So no hitting and initiate with the lower body first. If you do this there is no way it starts left.
Very off topic for this video i started swinging without arms and the speed is insane!!!! I always thought id be so slow that way😅
It sure is. Just need people to try it. Get this and you have speed for life. I will keep saying it. You don't have to be strong to be loose. So anyone can do this forever. Keep at it.
Will this work with the driver? Great tip. Thanks
You only have 1 swing so yes. Remember though it is extended but not locked.
Thank God for this. I can never get my arm straight in the backswing. And I end up locked and too rigid, not relaxed at all.
Exactly. Now you can forget about it.
P.S. - Love your references to Harry Vardon and Count Yogi in your list of arm benders.
Yeah, people love to speak without the facts.
How much turn do you have to do when you touch the club on your shoulder. Does your back faces the target when you turn while touching the club on the shoulder?
You are not really thinking of it. Just turn a little and rest it. If it goes 90 that's fine. You are just trying to get the club parallel. That is what I would be concerned with at this point.
Hi again Paul great vid as usual! Why does the neck rest swing look like you are flipping at it at impact?
Not sure which video you are talking about. If it was the drill it's a drill. You are not trying to perfect. To get rid of flipping you fire the lower faster. Find the flip so I can see what you are talking about.
@@paulwilsongolf thanks Paul in the video Lead arm straight or bent? After you take it off your neck and start the downswing it looks to me like you are flipping at it in the video? Only saying this as this is a part of my game that I am working on.
Watched it twice. I don't see a flip.
@@paulwilsongolf ok thanks anyway it just looked that way to me at normal speed? Keep up the great content love watching it!
Do you find students just lifting the the club and not making a shoulder turn with this drill? Seems like we need a little width even if not locked in ,but certainly looks like it promotes good rotation thru the swing.
Well, I have had a few do it wrong but in 2 seconds I get them doing it right. Turn and rest it on the shoulder. Give it a try and see how you do.
You have explained how I feel trying to keep arm straight
This tip is helping a lot of people who are in this boat. I think this is a huge problem that is holding back countless thousands of people. Glad you found it. See how it goes. I bet your game will dramatically improve.
Wow! You have just dispelled another golf swing myth that I was taught - you MUST keep your left arm straight - thanks so much for clarifying this - you can BEND that left arm at the top of the back swing - you are really making this game much more simple to understand!
Cant remember where i heard it, but i was told to keep the arm straight too.
So many have been which is really hampering people's progress because they can never loosen up.
so when I do this drill, I early extend like crazy - any thoughts on how to eliminate that? it's weird because I come in with that lag and feel great, but still stand up like a doofus as i come into impact.
So quit trying to do it at top speed. Just do easy swings to get used to the feeling of the new arm position. That is what the drill is for anyway. Because it's new and different you are probably standing up to see the result. Work on this this to maintain your spine angle:

Very good. The plan is to get in your mind for sure.
wow when I was younger I bent my arm all the time now Im 69 and I've been trying to keep my arm straight as I've been chucking topping shots but every once in a while I hit that perfect effortless shot and every time that happens my arm has bent some but I realize I have finished on my right toe chest facing my target. So it's not the arm being bent that's the problem it's lack of rotation correct?
Exactly. Keeping this arm dead straight is wrecking so many swings. Topping is you hitting hard with your arms. Fat shots you are pulling it down catching yourself will too much weight on the back foot at impact. Watch:

This is part of what I've been telling my friend who's just getting into golf. Just like with a golf swing, there's a lot of ways the GPS can take you but all that matters is you reach the right destination. If you watch 7 different pros you will see 7 completely different swings in one form or another. No two swings are exactly alike.
I see it differently. All pros do the same swing. I have been saying this for years. They have their own flare to that swing but they do 3 things the same. Circular body rotation. loose hinge, constant tilt (spine angle). Watch my shorts of various pros compared to Iron Byron. You will see what I am saying. In my first book and video series I flew in the inventor of Iron Byron and backed up everything I teach. Watch:

Thanks. I thought you had to keep your lead arm almost straight/locked. I could not do this comfortably. Good to know I don’t have to.
A lot of people think that and that's what's holding them back. Stay loose and see what happens.
Look at Rocco Mediate head on. Nice relaxed lead arm. Count Yogi as well. Bend in elbow and left wrist.
Yep, I love Count Yogi. He influenced a ton of golfers including: Mike Austin (he saw Yogi when he was in Chicago), Mike Dunaway, Wild Bill Mehlhorn (he taught with Yogi for 6 years) (best tee to green Hogan ever saw). I would also say Couples, Sheffler, Early Norman (just saw that one the other day). As I find others I will put them on my list.
Thank you for this thoughtful reply, I appreciate it. @@paulwilsongolf
