BE THE MONKEY! This technique works even with an extreme puller like my rescued greyhound...it takes persistence and I'm sure I look mental when walking in public, but the improvement is brilliant. My dog doesn't have much interest in treats when out and about, but just random walking makes him check in with me more and I can praise him. My arms are very grateful for this video! When you use this method your hyper crazy dog will start to become calm and focused on you. I use it to help people who have the most manic dogs from working line GSD youngsters to terrier terrors!

When there's no other dog in the neighbourhood, it's alright, but at the móment there 's coming another dog within 10 meters, i've got a problem and he's getting kind of agressive...
@@luciesneep Like Steve says, you have to add distance... If you see a dog coming keep at a distance in which your dog will remain calm, and reward him for the good behaviour. Gradually you will be able to get closer to other dogs. He might well want to meet the other dog, and be getting aggressive out of frustration, so it's good to give him the opportunity to make a dog friend or two for walks, etc.
I have my Madge, a black rescue greyhound, like yours, who used to race at Poole racetrack. The issue I have with her is recall, but I know this is hard with greyhounds, and she is very reactive when we meet other dogs, which is rare, because we live in a very rural place, and I only go out to walk her, due to my anxiety of going out. She does however, walk beautifully on the lead, which is sooo good - only jumping around like a ballerina when we meet other dogs! xxx

I've been using this technique for a month and it works great in a space like in your video but as soon as we start to do our walk his head is up and he wants to be in front and he's looking and smelling the air as he spots and smells things a mile away. If I stop he will sit and look at me and go back to his investigation of surroundings. If I do a 180 he will follow and get right back out in front. I'd love him to be mellow and chill like the dog in this video. Can you show walking with a more problem spastic dog who wants to lead and not follow like your sample dog?
To begin with your "walk" will be this - only 5 steps max. To get to the shops or the pub will take months. Start small. Every bush you pass, every smell is one "D" distraction. So each one ignored is a bonus - a point of celebration. I have walked miles using a figure of 8 every time the lead goes tight, dog gets fed up coz she want to follow the scent of that fox, so she learned that only walking with me in a mindful way allows her to follow a scent. I have been so angry that something so simple is so hard - we have just gone home, or caught a bus at times to stop me expressing my frustration. IT WILL COME, keep your patience
Brilliant demonstration....I call it engineered dog walking (drunk dog walking) as in you use your brain to walk in a way that the lead stay's loose for as long as possible while rewarding the dog.
Just seen this and we have a lurcher and a lab. Been walking them together, the lab is great but the lurcher, pulls like a train so I'm going to start walking them separately and use these techniques on the lurcher and we'll see how we get on

Hi Steve, I love your philosophy on training. In this case, I think excellent advice but I also wish you had not picked a dog such as a Greyhound. People need to see the struggle to understand the patience required and what the trainer is doing in these circumstances. When the right action is given by the dog 'that' convinces owners that the method works. Just saying :-)
Absolutely, it's so frustrating when demonstrating with dogs that already know what is expected of them, so nothing like what we experience as people trying to do this with our own dogs. 😟🐺 regards Joanne.

Hi Steve, Have been watching your video's and love them, however......my Lhasa Apso puppy who is 15 weeks old is resolutely unhappy with the lead!! I have tried to follow your tips and tricks vid (this one) and she just stands there! LOL I have only taken her in my back garden as she's not ready to go out until next week (vaccinations) but I stand there with a handful of her fave treats which she would kill for indoors, and she will NOT move unless I give a pull on the lead!! Any further tips and tricks please?? Would you like to borrow her to do a video with maybe LOLxx
Hi, great watch. My dog is managing this technique just outside my drive. When adding distance we manage quite well but when there is a cat I loose her ? Any suggestions ? Also if we come to the end of my street, there is grass and she will pull to sniff. That one were struggling with

Yes, it would have been nice to put this methodology to the test. We have Samoyeds and they would be utterly bored by this (not a food motivated breed either). We teach our pups to "follow" off lead first then add the leash. "Follow" cue remains.

Yeah but many greyhound rescues walk beautifully loose lead right away. Im on my second--he's a rescued Lurcher/Whippet who is doing great one year in but youre right--loose lead is dificult! Its our final frontier I think.

Then it becomes less consistent.Anxiety takes away from her ability to learn. Should I just give her super awesome treats just for sitting in busier parts/etc? Get the association of busy places = good things. How many treats should I be giving? My treat pouch never has enough for a session! I just don't want her thinking being anxious is what gets her treats. Thanks in advance! Love the knowledge and that you share it with us :)
If she's taking treats, she's not too anxious, so you are winning. It can take years to socialise and build confidence in anxious dogs. If you're seeing even small improvement, stick with it and it will pay off over time. She should be making eye contact when she looks at you. You can start by rewarding for glances and then raise the criteria to only rewarding eye contact.
What do I do if my puppy isn't food motivated? She loves chasing after a ball but it's difficult to use that as a reward for loose lead walking in the street 🙄😅

None of these videos indicate how long it should take to train a dog to walk with the lead loose. Steve said it is very hard. Fair enough. But how many days / weeks will this take a dog trainer and how long for a regular monkey 🐒 like me? Manage our expectations guys!
Thats all very well with a calm non reactive dog. When you have a hyper sensitive and anxious dog sometime you struggle to stop him pulling and there is no way they will walk calmly on a loose lead.
Unrealistic. Most dogs are not like this. Food is a good way to get attention very early in the game, but is NOT allowed in the obedience ring. Even if you are not ever going to show your dog, reliance on food is a weakness. Also, food must be preferable to the dog over other dogs, squirrels, bouncing balls, etc., which isn't the case for all dogs. Most training is remedial (poorly or non-trained dogs) or with puppies, whose mindsets are quite different from this retiree from the track.
You know what Steve I don't believe any dog trainer, especially after the experiences I have had with them. These dog trainers like to look good with there Belgian Malinois but it's all show and these trainers like to look good but they are so misleading and create issues with new dog owners.
I now have an energetic 3 year old springer spaniel walking nicely 90% of the time, using this method. Walks are much more enjoyable now. Thanks!

Im with my second Lurcher. First one died. He was great with loose lead. The new guy pulls and Im havin a helluva time trying to teach loose lead.

when you get a pull - change direction. Reward ANYTHING that is in the direction of success - one step even. Or standing on a loose lead first

That dog is very chilled, try that with my Springer, I'm no fool, it's a long teaching process involving repetition day in day out.

It takes as long as it takes! A dog is for life and so is training be it physical or mental.
Really???? Why didn’t you choose the dog who never had loose lead training and it’s actually pulling on the lead???
Make that video again without a compliant dog. Preferably a hyper dog
