    THE VIDEO:
    Alex Noriega is one of the most well known landscape photographers working today. He came onto the scene in 2010 and very quickly gathered a large and appreciative audience.
    In 2016 he won the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Award, and since then has began to devote more of his creative energy to recording more intimate and anonymous scenes.
    During this conversation Alex and I talked at length about his development and evolution as a creative artist. I am a huge fan, not only of his amazing photographs, but of his thoughtful and insightful commentary on the contemporary scene.

    Alex has been a huge inspiration and dear friend of mine ever since I got into landscape photography. I'm glad to see your conversation with him was able to do him justice. It was so great seeing him have a chance to talk more about his personal vision and be honest with his growth as an artist. I think everyone would benefit from watching this video.

    Its interesting to hear all of the different places people come from in photography. From the purely artistic to the purely technical. I can relate to some of where Alex is coming from, as well as geographically. :D Great interview, always inspiring.

    I am really enjoying this series! I guess it is one of the bright spots of lockdown that these great photographers have the bandwidth for interviews. Have you considered interviewing Rachael Talibart? I'd love to see her included in your series. THANKS!

    Hi Alister, really love these videos. Finding them very motivational and liberating in recognising that my photographs are my art and I can do what I want to do and what makes me happy. You are pulling together a wonderful selection of photographers that not only do I like their work but I like them as a person too. Thank you. Take care and stay safe.

    You know, after watching and having some time to thing about this.. How in the world can one be original??? It's all been done before and is honestly just being repeated. There's people out there that have made a living ripping Alex's style and the same can be said for Marc A..
    I would love to here your thoughts on this.
    How????
    Anyway, thanks again.

      Thanks for that. I stopped worrying about this a few years ago, my own relationship with the landscape and the protection and sustainability of it are far more important to me. People rip me off too, even calling images the same name and then entering them in contests. Who cares? I certainly don't.
      I don't believe for a second that my work isn't unique. But I don't spend any time around iconic locations though.

      Honestly, in Landscape Photography there is always the option to go somewhere, where people usually don't go. Not having seen imagery beforehand, but having to engage with the landscape on your own terms is always inspiring to me. Not that I do not like to shoot Icelands South or the like, but going to more remote places is always enthralling and invigorating.

    I am really enjoying these conversations. I find them deeply thought provoking.Looking at the portfolios of the landscape photographers that you have interviewed there seems to be a shift in subject matter. early in their careers the focus seems to be broad vistas. Later in their careers as they mature as photographers there seems to be more emphasis on intimate landscapes. Do you see this as a natural evolution of landscape photography. one that comes about as we move away from shooting formulaic images and towards more creative and expressive images?

    • @Alister_Benn
      @Alister_Benn  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for that. I think many of us head down that road as it's easier to be unique. It's tough to be an individual when you go to same places as everyone else and point your cameras at the same thing. It becomes a contest on who can out do the other in terms of conditions or funky processing. It becomes pretty vacuous after a while.

    It seems I’ve been taking mostly what you’ve described as quiet photographs for many, many years, having them described as “Quiet Corners” long ago. I was originally inspired by Eliot Porter to see the beauty in the ordinary, simple views of nature. I found that living in New Jersey back at the beginning of my photography, lacking the epic landscapes of so many other parts of the US and unique locations around the world, made focusing on that type of image almost a necessity, and eventually became more satisfying spiritually than visiting an iconic location, because after all, they’ve been shot before and will continue to be photographed until they disappear. Although most of your interviews involve professionals who made photography their profession, since I arrived much later in life to photography, giving up a career was out of the question, but pursued it with much success as a part-timer rather quickly. I realize many of your guests, as have you, given up previous careers to pursue photography full time as a business, I wonder what your thoughts might be on having the same passion for the landscape in photography without the “pressure” to earn a living with it as well?

    • @Alister_Benn
      @Alister_Benn  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you for the insight. I think the other people I speak with and myself all share one thing, which is the ones who gave up other careers did so because there was no choice. The passion for the landscape and the expression of that passion became our driving force. As long as you don't let the running of the business and that "pressure" affect the love for the landscape then there can be balance. It can be a fine line and there is some shrugging of shoulders one someone gets "famous" turning out the same old tired representations of the same places. But hey, I get to walk in the woods most days, so how bad can it be?

      @@Alister_Benn Thanks for the reply. With a family to support, and a future to secure, at the time it seemed too risky to jump out of a lucrative and stable career that fit my personality, for the unknown financial prospects in photography. As a par-tier, I gave myself 2 years to get published, and met that goal rather quickly, and then shortly after, was picked up by a calendar company to supply images for their NJ calendars, then another publisher picked me up for more NJ calendars and books, solo exhibits, etc.and things went very well back then as they do today. And now that I'm retired with a wonderful pension, I can relax, enjoy the same passion for the landscape, and still without any need to have that passion provide a livelihood. I suppose there are two paths to follow that can be equally rewarding. Love the interviews and the probing and revealing questions you pose to your guests. Look forward to them as they arrive.

    I just came accross this interview (better late than never) and I really appreciated the discussions about finding one’s own voice and how you conducted the interview to have Alex unfold his path. It definitely helped me understand my own path and where I stand between replicating other’s formulas and being totally myself.
    Thank you again Allister for taking the time to put this series together, it is a great contribution to the photography world.
    Take care and I wish you a great holidays season!
