  • In this video dr. Nens van Alfen shows the use of dynamic muscle ultrasound for assessing movements that can be see in muscles. The presentation will features fibrillations, fasciculations and whole muscle movements, and discuss the use of these features in different neuromuscular disorders. In addition, scan tips are shown so you can use this simple and elegant technique in your own neuromuscular practice too.

    If US measurements are reliable, with a larger pickup area (16-24 sq. mm.), concentric needle pick up area and hence the size of MU territory may be higher than 5-15 sq. mm reported by simulation studies (Nandedkar and others). In the images, diameter of the fasciculating area appears to extend to 2-3 cm. Earlier, Buchthal F et al, using multi-lead electrode recording had also reported a larger motor unit territory.

      That sounds plausible, yes; thank you for pointing this out! I think there are even some MRI studies right now that show similar MU sizes.
