Seeing one of the best painters on UA-cam realize he messed up, get feedback from peers, realize he feel prey to some of the very things he warns about, and then how to recover and fix it is amazing to watch. So many painters on this platform seem to be afraid to show that they're fallible and how to recover from mistakes.

Excellent video Vince, super encouraging and I think having a community of painting peers you can swap feedback with as well as general encouragement and camaraderie is one of the best parts of the mini painting hobby - its a solitary yet communal affair.

Vince i watch your videos and I'm just in awe wondering how you picked up so much practical knowledge of colors, paints, pigments, techniques, etc etc etc, while also coming across as just a very chill person. The videos and pieces you make are sorely underrated and deserve a lot more attention. Thank you!

This was such an encouraging video - to know that someone with your experience can still miss the mark. But then you went back and fixed it, and you recognize that there may still be flaws which need to be remedied. As someone who is itching to get back into the hobby after 30 years away (my workspace is currently non-existent), I look forward to being able to receive feedback and apply it to my own work. Thank you for this!

Cannot describe how inspiring and uplifting it is to hear from a painter whom is somewhat of an idol for me in this hobby discuss his own failure and need for peer input. Vince is the man when it comes to this hobby... Not only is he a virtuoso at painting but also the best teacher on YT for us mere mortals lol. The question having been asked id like to give some feedback.... For a Nurgle corrupted Sister id say push of the battle damage and grime a fair ammount further and the chainsword actually having blood on it is definitely needed considering the decapitated marine here lol. Absolutely stunning work Vince.

As a new painter, I often find it frightening to see how you "veterans" seem to always know what you are doing and how you never make mistakes.
Knowing that you are humans too, makes us noobs feel better and more willing to give it a try even if sometimes we watch your videos and think "oh no, I'll never be that good!"
    Appreciate the humility!

My biggest takeaway from this is something I already knew, but needed a reminder of. Don't be afraid to experiment when painting your minis. It won't always work, but that's ok. You can always repaint it. Its something I've only come to terms with in the last year of painting, but has led to me finding several new things that worked and I can use on future minis, as well as several things I know don't work and was able to learn from.

    Gorgeous lighting on that figure!
I found throughout the video that my eye was drawn to the gold plate on her belly, and I barely noticed the face.
I hate saying this, but I didn't realise she was nurgley until you said so.
Nurgle characters often have very interesting and expressive faces, and appear pretty manic. I wonder if you might be able to draw some attention to her face by making it paler and a bit gross, maybe some bright sores, veins, etc. Her eyes look blank in the video, which I know can be a "look", but perhaps misses an opportunity to give her more character. Her pose is quite stoic, but maybe you can still portray that feverish nurgle energy boiling inside.
Sounds heretical, but you could nurgle up the gold with some dirt and goo to make it recede a bit.
    Good luck!

The purple cloth draped over the right arm blends into the dark background along with the right side of her torso. If the orange ambient light reaches up to her chest then a bit of orange around the edges of the cloth could help making it stand out from the background and making the silhouette easier to read. Since the right arm is slightly more forward from the body like the right leg, the torso isn't casting a shadow on it.
Edit: Because on the hardcore miniatures display model that empty space is filled with the chains and skulls. Their render also use bright hair color to frame the face and give it an outline against the coif, but that's more up to taste I guess.

  • @TheThewhatnow

The only thing i kept looking at during the video was the light on the sword. On the rock the lightsource is coming from below and to the right, but the rock itself doesn’t seem to block the light and reflection on the lower part of the sword at all. I can tell you did a shadow from the foot, but if the direction of source is consistent i feel like it shouldn’t have the strongest reflection at the absolute bottom of the sword unless it is standing at the very edge of the cliff where the ground couldn’t block any light. Also if the light is able to cast a reflections on the chest area, i would expect atleast some amount of light to also reach higher up the sword.

I have used my friends for feedback but none are painters who go beyond basic colors and maybe an edge highlight and no one is willing to offer criticism. So I send wip pics asking, "hey does this look like metal?" and that has received some ok feedback, not what to improve.
I post each mini or unit to insta, facebook and the internal miniatures chat at the company I work and tell people to please offer improvement suggestions and only get compliments. Coders will rip into each other for bad code but not on hobby stuff.
Remember the day when "everybody is a critic?"
    As always good video.

It looks amazing. I love the armour with the flecks of orange rust. Theres something about about that colour combo that gets me every time. love the bounce light too.
The only thing that I wonder about is how relatively dark her face is compared to her hands. Her face more closely matches the horns on her backback so it feels a like the face might get a little lost.
Great video too. I used to work in vfx and at one company I worked at they had a great mantra "Show early, Show oftern". I think its so easy for creatives to run down a rabbit hole and come out the other end with something they dont like very much :D

I hear you there. There is a point on any given piece I paint where I might agonize over whether to add an additional color, or accent to a piece, and that is where a sculpt can sit on my desk for a solid month while I deliberate and procrastinate.

    • @dguen798
      @dguen798 2 місяці тому +1

When I start to agonize over a potentially finished product here's what I do: for adding a color I paint up a 25mm base with that color and hold it up to see if it would work. Or I will set the piece aside out of sight and paint several other minis then come back to it.

Feedback is tricky, especially in online circles. I like getting feedback on things that I know I have painted to a high quality, and want to improve on. Feedback from you and Sam Lenz is the only reason I have come as far as I have as a painter in relatively little time.
But there are a lot of models I paint either for fun or for games. I am not really looking for feedback on them. I know they are not perfect, I know where I could spend more time and improve them, but I have chosen not to. Getting unwanted feedback on something you know isn't perfect is rough. The only response you can have, if you even give one, is "I know, I chose it to be that way." and something about saying that, when I know it isn't at my usual standard, is just difficult for me.

I always bounce my color schemes off my kids, sending them pictures of the first model in a unit, to get feedback, before proceeding with the rest of the models. My favorite unit, dark teal and burnt orange assault intercessors, I pretty much owe to my daughter’s suggestions.

  • @Wijkert
    @Wijkert 2 місяці тому

    Some feedback like you asked.
    1. I know the mini is not glued down yet, but my attention kept being drawn to here feet and sword floating on the base. The sword is supposed to be stuck in the ground from what I can tell. You are probably planning on fixing this when you eventually glue here down, but just in case.
    2. I think even though it has gotten better, the high value of the loan cloth and leather straps is still messing with the value of the gold next to it. The same goes for the face of the head she is holding. It is (or looks) brighter than the gold next to it.
    3. The orange reflections on the bottom of here breast armour are pretty bright, yet the reflection of here right knee is weaker even though it's closer to the source.
    4. If the orange light travels up to the chest, it will travel up to other NMM parts like the gold hand guard of the sword and the NMM steel on the right part of the sword as well. Maybe something is blocking the light, hard to tell. The bottom edge of here left shoulder pad should catch some orange light as well.
    5. The orange reflection on here right calf is a little high up compared to the rest of the reflection. Could be the angle of the photo though.
    6. On here feet the orange reflections go down to the floor, yet the rock she is standing on should block (at least some of) the light.
    Hope this helps Vince!

Wonderful, figure and a great tutorial, with a lot of excellent points about getting feedback….and then acting on it…as you say, it can only help you become better. Only suggestion I could provide is to possibly increase the red “glow” effect on the severed head - might be the camera angle but given the height of the head, I’d think it would have brighter reflections of the fires below?

  • @noops9220
    @noops9220 2 місяці тому

While I think darken the top left of the background helps it would probably be good to add a couple of beams of light to hint at the spot light effect you are going for… they don’t need to reach as far as the mini but something to hint at a light source might help

Failure is essential to growth. Neuro paths are pruned and refined through both success and failure. The trick is that you have to accept, internalize, and then move on from the failure. If you just sit on the failure, that's when it starts to rot.

I suppose you've got the suggestion already: I wonder if the fact that the cut head got more light and liveliness than her own face is serving the figure? I would totally check a greyscale version of the pictures to check what you're happy with. Just a thought!

One of your most important videos. I hope it gets the views, because I think there are people who just need this oomph to revisit some old half-done projects. You also having an "I suck" moment is kind of comforting.
Thank you for answering my question about oils on metal colour in another video. I bring it up here because it stems from my latest failure. I have this full army of Slaves to darkness that I have assembled in a way that they can hotswap between AoS and tOW Chaos Warriors (magnetized inserts, round to square, etc.) My grand idea for this army is a slaanesh-ish army (some games they are undivided, some games slaanesh.) The entire army would be a desaturated blue/violet that transitions to a toned-down version of the magenta(?) you did for your AoS army. Well, my two test models started looking like refugees from the warp's clown college. The 'transition' was an eyesore. I followed the rule, "if you hate it, keep going,' because that usually does indeed work. I tried to fix with more washing, blending, and that left me clowns with patches of coffee stains. A better artist can surely break this color rule, but I can't. Also, I think either my ambition has outstripped what store-bought acrylic washes can do for me, or maybe I just suck. What I do know is we are getting back on the horse (just need my white spirits to show up.) I am keeping the desaturated violet, but losing the purple/red's. Last note-- my airbrush had gone from a little inconsistent (occasional clog when you wouldn't expect one) to full-on jammed when I was repriming these minis back to start. It had to be in the brass nozzle, I kept working and working a tool and the needle into that thing. Kept soaking in IPA. Turns out a tiny strip of paper towel fiber got caught up in there. My lesson to myself was two-fold. If your AB isn't acting the way you come to expect it to, STOP. Is the trigger sticking? STOP. Just stop because you aren't going to like what it's putting out. Bad progress is anti-progress because you're just going to have to redo it all later (it only takes just one white speckle and game over.)
EDIT-- PS. Catching the warm glow on the top rim of the belt plate was a fantastic touch. I think my brain wanted that but wouldn't tell me.

Excellent video Vince!!! 40k is not my wheelhouse but I didn't know what to think the 1st time I saw this other than well done but not my thing. Now I would say it was more "GlamDark" than "GrimDark". The sword needs some blood and wear if she's beheading enemies. Personally, I'd go nuts with some rust and grime on at least some of that gold, maby in recesses and around joints. I think the face and eyes should be brighter. She's nurgled, but there is a haunting beauty still that should make you ache for what has happened to her. Thanks for sharing!!!

I wouldn't consider it a failure. It just can be improved based on your knowledge and perception. It takes a trained eye to appreciate those nuanced details. You have to be an artist, not just a painter. We tend to be our own worst critics, but if you continually strive to improve, then it is positive reinforcement.
Love your work regardless. Always inspirational

Firstly I think this video is incredibly insightful as especially in UA-cam painting videos we often see incredibly artistic people such as yourself "nail" something first time when in reality that's not how painting goes behind the scenes, there's always mistakes or humming and hawing or getting a tone wrong, but this video is a great way to show that even the best painters mess up sometimes. As for criticism for feedback I feel like your adjusted paint job is pretty incredible, and my only issue is that I feel this sculpt in particular maybe suits a black Legion or world eaters type of sister of battle, the sculpt itself is a little too clean. I understand if your so far along that making these changes could be too much but I think the likes of some different sized horns or spikes to break up the uniformity, maybe some tentacles or viscera spilling from underneath the armour plates, or maybe some large holes or pock marks in the armour to show how old, worn and decayed this sister is, especially on the gold nmm belt, it's just incredibly large for the sculpt and a tentacle or large crack or hole could really break it up visually. Well done on the paint job regardless of this, it looks amazing

I humbly say that if there is a need to emphasize more focus on the top of the miniature then the golden crown should be brighter than the golden piece at the waist (also than the hilt of the sword and knee-piece). It doesn't seem to do that. Maybe it happens because the golden elements at the bottom part of miniature are still too bright (they seem to reflect a lot of light coming from above while the scene suggests a darker environent).

Secondly she is holding a marines head , on the highly reflective areas the ear and breathing tubes would show more orange . her left leg would also show more of the orange reflection from the fire right behind her a bounce light down the side of her shin gaurd and the underside of the spikes on her leg. But all in all , i really like where you have gone with this miniature Vince. This is just my observation .

Im not a pro but maybe the red bouncing light at the belly area needs to be brighter, the reflection at the chest still looks brighter and it’s farther from the source. Hope it’s helpful :) (it’s an amazing paint job btw the green armour is awesome)

Really appreciate that you share these as it I think is the stuff that helps people progress and removes the assumed barrier between the distinctly average and the inspiring artists such as yourself. Not that I aspire the competition painting but I do enjoy trying new stuff, seeing how I can maybe add a bit more to the armies I aim to get on the table.
Only question I would poses is does the mid-section of the sword need some underlighting? That is the only bit that feels a little disconnected, and I think that is why? Or maybe it should be picking colours from the armour?

Hey Vince thankyou so much for another free and amazing video.
Yesterday I painted the new dark angels hero Belial
I'm happy with the paint job except for the scroll on his shoulder pad which has the inscription 'Belial'
I feel like I have filled in the tiny lettering with paint, ruining the detail.
I want to strip the paint off of just that part very carefully if possible.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  2 місяці тому

It's hard to strip paint from one section, you're usually better with just painting over. It's just a tough ask, you can sometimes use 99% isopropyl and work the paint away with a stiff brush, but you are always going to run into the edges and that is hard to hide. My honest answer is usually, unless its for comeptition, don't waste your time, just make it the best possible and move on.

    Feedback on the model:
If she is to be s "Sister of Nurgle" then she is lacking the in the appearance of rot, decay, and illness along with rust and detritus on her arms & armor. In short, she looks to clean and healthy for a follower of Grand Pa Nurgle.
Now, with that said, I have total faith that you'll be able to make her unclean.

    I do suffer from it.
I have several models not finished, missing some panels off a knight I'm not happy with, weapon not looking quite right...
The hard part is going back to it and re-do something. It's the fear of making it worse or "wasting time".

Hey Vince, thanks for the great video, sharing part of your journey and the struggles you encounter with this piece! It is a fantastic looking and unique piece.
I was wondering why you did no get even brighter with the top of the chainmail coif. Compared to the rest of the metal parts, especially the edges facing upward, it is less bright. While this gives the atmosphere of it being more worn, shouldn't mail have at least some brighter reflection?

I've subbed, you have allot of information in this an other videos that are very useful. I have two questions that are individual to me... Have you done a video on accessibility? IE someone who has painted but had an injury that impedes "normal" painting. Separate question, dealing with burn out when painting?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  2 місяці тому

Awesome, glad to have you along on the hobby journey. Now, to your questions, I haven't really done a video on the first item, its something I would love to help with, I am just not sure I am properly equipped to share it, but I will have to think about how I can tackle that in the best way possible. Now, the burnout question - I have mentioned it in a few videos. My best advice is to make sure you are alternating projects, and most importnatly, always pushing yourself just enough that you're learning but not afraid. If you are constantly challenging yourself, you will always have something that is drawing your interest.

Great video! Quick question, if your fire at the bottom left of the miniature gives off reddish light, I can't help but notice that when you look at the mini from the front and we see fire on her right too but no light coming off that fire in the background. Is it because of depth of light source in the background or some other reason? At 13:40 of the video for reference.

One question, though, and kindly excuse it if its too personal: how do you manage to paint so many hours a week (and with up to 14 hrs on a day) while maintaining a day job and a personal life, i.e. relationship, friends, doggos etc.? 😅

I'll say it at the start - I can't paint, I like building models more. Paints are in the box and closet, taking space and collecting dust (partially due to my perfectionism). But you wanted opinions so I'll give you mine. As others said the chain sword is too clean, this weapon looks like somebody took it from Tech-Priest's hands and doesn't belong to the servant of Nurgle.
For me, her right leg is still too clean, especially looking from the front at her thigh and that golden ring. Some delicate streaks of dirt or grime should do the trick. And more texture on leather straps especially when her upper thigh is more highlighted than the leather next to it. What is the angle of the light? From the front or the top or maybe some secondary reflections from the golden disc - coz the more I analyze this piece of art the more the brightest parts of leather straps are bugging me.
At 14:10 of the video, I see that the light comes in from her left but it's the white light, not that orange glow. Ok, I think I get it, you used multiple sources of light from multiple angles (15:11, the side of the sword and the cloth), but even then the leather on her right leg above the circle (leg band?) is too dark - not highlighted even tho we can see highlight on her armor under and between straps. You'll need another darker place - between those two I described. So from right to left (background) i.e. from the viewer's perspective: light, darker spot, highlight from the top, and shadow towards the back.
Thorns, spikes, bone protrusions - which one is it specifically? For me, they look bland. Why? They lack definition and crispness, they're not natural in perception. You'll need to give them some pattern for us to believe they are natural. They are sticking out and lowering the quality of the whole.
Another part that I think will need some work - is the hand that holds the sword i.e.fingers also lacking crispness and definition but it may be the sculptor's fault.
Last thing: cloth, I don't like that desaturated look XD but it's my preference in saturated colors.
I may be incorrect - ask another better-qualified person. If I sound harsh - I'm sorry, I spent some time with Grammarly and Google Translate to give you my thoughts and suggestions coz you asked ;) I hope you forgive me.
P.S. Face is awesome dirt, blood, soot, goo, you name it. Oh, and the golden disc should have some stains too, it's too clean rn.

I'm only like 4 months into the hobby. But I have been studying psychology and philosophy for over 30 years. I have some feedback Vince but its not about your painting. Vince you very strong willed. You have amazing focus and determination and that shows in your work. The fact that you kept going and kept seeking advice from trusted friends shows how smart you are.
This is a success story through and through. In fact I have never seen a better success story in my life that is as clear as this one. Albeit mainly because we can clearly see the work on the miniature each step of the way, so that really helps the visual aid in the story of success.
Vince videos like this a gems that really help make people grow in all aspects of life. If you can put out a video like this Vince maybe you should look at doing a Ted Talk someday or motivational speaking ''if such a thing interests you''. As I'm sure there are a ton of other people that would love to hear you success story that are outside of our teeny tiny hobby.
Thanks for all your videos, tutorials and streams.

Feedback is often painful, but focused feedback always pushes me higher.
So feedback here: where is the fire light on the upper part of the sword? Sure it's farther away, but your contrast has told me it's shiny, so it feels like the fire should be reflected there.
Secondly, I don't feel like the left hand skin matches the face. Is that intentional? The hand feels so much brighter.
Thirdly, and just a question because I can't see the model in 3d, would the model's left leg be fully in shadow from the fire? It feels like it should have brighter fire reflections, but I could be wrong on that.
Edit: Seeing the angle at 14:00 it looks like the orange reflection on the left leg should come a little further forward to match the reflection angle of the right leg. I'd been looking at the angle from 15:07 where it feels like the reflection on the left leg just disappears. Once again, that's just me.

I just discovered batch painting. I'm doing a display quality Khagras Reavers warband atm and would like to continue to a full army. However, I don't actually play any games. I'm more concerned with aesthetics than being a game winning force, but would like it to still be playable. I've been googling it a bit, but this is deep waters. Do you have a resource for a noob like myself? (Not really looking to play, but considering selling on completion) Much gratitude as always.

Personally i still think the metallics are too clean and the tone too yellow id say a more old gold and possibly the signs of early dirt and corrosion gathering on the metallics overall. Alternatively I still think that it could be the mindset you approached the model with. You painted green armour with metallics which is great but i think the model is a sister who was corrupted and the once black armour has been blessed with green decay from the great father which would also show on the other metallics as im sure there are no clean metallics in nurgles garden. Im no pro but i hv found the mindset i apply has helped meet the criteria of what im trying to represent to get to the next level
