  • Octopus's Garden! A song by The Beatles, written and sung by Ringo Starr, from their 1969 album, Abbey Road. George Harrison assisted Ringo with chord changes etc, but essentially its Ringo's second ever composition. The idea apparently came about when Ringo was on a boat belonging to comedian Peter Sellers in Sardinia in 1968. Ringo ate Squid for lunch (his first time), and the boat's captain told him of how Octopuses travel along the sea bed, gathering stones and shiny objects with which to build gardens. Ringo's songwriting was also inspired by the mounting tensions within The Beatles at the time, leaving him to feel like he just wanted to escape somewhere, under the sea.
Such a lovely song! I guess my theme for this week is songs with a 1645 chord progressions, such as this one, and Perfidia (also done this week, and also with a 1645 chord progression). I've been studying them, because a guitarist friend told me that songs with this progression are excellent busking choices. Turns out I had a few of them already in my busking repertoire (Beyond the Sea, All I Have to Do is Dream, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow) without even knowing it! Well...I'm adding Octopus's Garden to my rep, it's very fun AND easy to play! I hope you'll enjoy my ukulele version of this Beatle's classic!
