- Finishing my build of the new Airfix 1/24 scale Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IXc, painted as EN398 flown by Flight Lieutenant Ian Keltie, No 402 Squadron, "City of Winnipeg", based on Royal Air Force Kenley, England in March 1943.
In previous videos I built the cockpit, the ammunition bays, and the Rolls Royce Merlin engine - in this video I paint the Day Fighter Scheme camouflage pattern, apply the decals, weather the aircraft, and finish the kit!

A tidy, OOB build, made even more so with the understated weathering.
The whole series has been an excellent tutorial.
Thank you
Great build. I’ve been waiting for final reveal video and I wasn’t disappointed!

Hello from Brisbane, Australia. Great job! I love how you take the time to explain the detail of what you’ve done and why. I’ve just finished building the cockpit on this same model, so I’m very much looking forward to getting the fuselage and wings attached. Fingers crossed Airfix bring out other 1/24 WW2 planes of this quality! I’m just getting back into model building after a ~35 year break since my childhood. I can’t believe at how much I’m enjoying the return and how it calms the mind. It’s videos such as yours that’s helping me get up to speed on all the developments in technique since the 1980’s. Thank you very much for taking the time to record and post all of your videos.
Thanks for watching - I'm glad you found the videos helpful. Yes, it really is a calming hobby (usually!), isn't it? I'm personally hoping for a 1/24 Hurricane from Airfix. We'll see...
What a lovely job on a fantastic war bird
Thank you :)
Really lovely job. Great stuff.
Thanks mate
Super build
Thank you
great job magic work weathering looks great
Thank you David
Excellent build!
Thanks mate
Beautiful and patient work . I've been enjoying your videos while travelling the world with my family. You've inspired me for when I get home (after all the packing boxes are emptied that is) thanks
Thank you. Enjoy your travels!
Looks amazing mate
Thanks mate
You’ve done her proud, really a great job.
About decals, I seem to hold my breath until the decal is down ( I’ll pass out one day, I’m sure) because one tiny mistake and it’s ruined, but you’ve done a great job like I said.
Hehe, I know what you mean, especially with rare or expensive decals where getting a replacement will be hard or impossible.
Top modelling skills 👌
Thank you
This looks amazing man. Top job ol boy!
Thank you, much appreciated!
Super result! Though I don't think the mk IX had a wire from the mast to the tail
Thank you. Yes, you're right about the aerial. Oops!
Jupiter from the Planets by Holst one of my favourite pieces of music
Mine too! I use it a lot in my videos :)
It turned out excellent. You did a great job with the decals as well. Scheme B turned out great there. Cheers
Thank you John. Yes, very pleased with it.
@@ModelNerd We all are mate, great finish on that and agreed enjoyed the subtle weathering.
A very pretty bird .
Definitely a classic design! Thanks for watching!
Yay!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
That, I think, is the best of these that I've seen. She's gorgeous......well done 👌🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Ah.....you don't need the arial wire on a Mk IX though......
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Ah, I didn't know that about the Mk IXs - thanks for the info. I might remove it, depending on whether I think the superglue will leave an ugly mark. I will know for next time though!
Facking hell you have knocked it out the park again, would be a great diorama with a ground crew and pilot.
Thanks Calum. Yes, I'd love to add a couple of figures if I could find some in this scale.
13:29 really good work 😅
Thank you
Greetings Nerd, that was a totally outstanding build, you must be very proud of the worknyou have done, i do like the grey/ green scheme, very best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia 👍👍👍👍
Thank you mate! Yes, it's a good looking scheme. It would look great with a Dark Earth / Dark Green 1/24 Hurricane next to it too, don't you think? :)
@@ModelNerd now that would be a great 'stablemate' photo, cheers Les
Exquisite build. I have to confess my initial doubts of the kit have changed , most likely due to your excellent skills. It's a very "large" kit , and would display well in any museum or hobby shop. I have not seen the Tamiya full masking sheet, it looks like it would be an advantage on such a large kit. Thanks for showing your excellent results.
Thank you. I don't have any experience with the Tamiya large scale kits or masks, but I am sure they would be excellent
At this scale, with the decal at 7:49, I would have been seriously tempted to keep the text from the decal, but paint the line... What do you think?
Yes, I was tempted and if it had given me any trouble at all that would have been my plan. But it went down so well. Painting had the advantage of letting you create wear effects more easily, of course.
Awesome 👍🏾. Really nice. Very well done. A masterpiece!
Thank you - and thanks for watching!
I just use a piece of paper for infilling, much easier than pulling off all that tape and saves on cost too.
Good tip - thanks
The exhausts should have a weld seam on them.
Yes, they do. It's only very fine but it is there. The part I was removing was the join from the two parts.
Looks great, building it currently and 8 agree with the speed you suggest
Thanks
Very nice build. I am also at the end of my build of the same kit. Going with that same scheme because of the Popeye nose art but I have also painted the invasion stripes on mine. Probably not accurate but I wanted both. 😀
Thanks! I'm like that too - if I like the way something looks, I paint it even if it isn't accurate. It's your kit and you're the one who will be looking at it when it's finished :)
*Awesome, the result is fantastic! 1/24 scale is far from 1/32 talking about the level of details! Congrats MN, you did the best!*
Thank you mate, I appreciate that. Yep, it seems like a huge step up in scale. I really hope Airfix make a 1/24 Hurricane to go with this.
Wow 🤩. Beautiful done. Youre Spitfire is really beautiful. I have the same and I'm not gone do better than you. Amazing and je reste sans voix devant ton bel objet et magnifique montage. C'est réellement beau. Bravo sincerely
Thank you! Good luck with yours!
I’ll need to get my pre order in eventually….
For sure!
👍👍
Thanks Dave
I have this bird but have not gotten to it yet I did build the trupitor Stuka and that took me several months
These are definitely long term projects :) Hope you enjoyed it.
I'm currently toying between this or the Kotare in 1/32 scale 🤔
It's a tricky one. I like this kit but wish there were more aircraft kits in the same scale. Recently tooled ones, I mean.
Nice build but... no pilot, sigh.
Thanks
Hi MN, thanks for showing the detailed decal work. That was very interesting and insightful for tricky applications.
Question - do you have any ideas about how to take the curse out of the shine of the canopy? How might you age/weather something like a clear part?
Thanks for showing the depth of this epic sized model. Fantastic final look!
Thanks - I got there in the end! Yes, the decals on this were daunting but ultimately went down very easily indeed. As for the canopy shine - I'm not sure. I'm not sure a matt coat, even a light one, would work and I'm sure even a very fine sand paper would be too much too. However, given that there are a few parts left over I could give it a trial I guess.
