As someone who grew up in Concrete, watching this has brought up a lot of good memories. I'm so glad you enjoyed my hometown, it truly is one of Washington's hidden gems!
I love this! You captured my hometown so well. I feel so privileged to be able to say that that is where I grew up! I am so glad you enjoyed it!
Can confirm - as a native Concretian the town came about because of the limestone in "them thar hills". Concrete used to be covered by the ocean leaving behind limestone deposit. Limestone is a key mineral in Concrete. The original town name was Minnehaha but changed rather promptly to Cement City. The neighboring town on the other side of the river was called Baker (after the river that is now controlled by the Upper and Lower Baker Dam). There were two cement companies - one in each town. The two towns eventually merged and what happens when you mix dry cement (Cement City) and water (Baker) you get CONCRETE!!! Ps - Chloe's aunt's husband and I were best friends in HS and played in a band together!!!
The back story of the name… WOW. That’s the kind of stuff I was hoping to find in the museum. Haha. And that’s why I love small towns! Everyone knows everyone! Very cool.
Saw you filming at the silo and I am so excited that your video about Concrete turned out so great! Sharing with everybody! Love it!!!
Aww, Thank you!!! Concrete is a such a lovely town. I’m excited to come back and climb those silos when it a a rock climbing wall!
Washington Portland Cement Co. opened in 1908, they're located farther inland on Hwy 20 and Puget Sound Energy has rehabed their "Clubhouse" into their Visitor Center, their silos also remain. They were steam operated using coal. Teams of oxen pulled the raw materials into town. Then Superior Portland Cement opened in 1912 and put a dam on a local creek and had enough electricity to power the plant and the town, so soon WPC went out of business. SPC had a tram system with buckets to bring the raw materials into town, had to watch when you went under it or if something was already on the road. SPC was coating everything in and around town with cement dust so instead of upgrading the dust collectors they closed the plant in 1969. Grandfather McD worked at both plants as a chemist, he'd wanted to patent Hyurly Portland Cement but it was a company product. There was a sample of it in the SPC time capsule. Lately I found some info that looks like they re-branded it and did give it a patent but he was long gone. He did a study of cement formulas for the Secretery of the Interior Ray Wilbur who was involved in the construction of Hoover Dam, found it in the family papers. The articles I found on WSU's digital collection indicate they produced about 55% of the cement for Grand Coulee Dam. There are many other cement projects such as the Ballard Locks and there's a list somewhere. The musuem has a great website: Concrete Heritage Museum.org. Loved this video. Our family has a place at Lake Tyee, and we have always enjoyed Concrete. This video gave the feels for this unique small town. Well done.
Aw thank you! It really it a wonderful place
The museum has some very neat items on the movie “This Boy’s Life.” The movie was made in Concrete and starred Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.
When I’m back I’ll have to make an effort to go when it’s open!
Is Dwight buried in Concrete?
@@jessemichael504 I think his real name was Robert Sites not Dwight
I love the video!! So glad you enjoyed Concrete. If you come back during the summer, you should check out Sauk Mountain. It has a truly breathtaking view from the top. P.S. I subscribed!! Keep up the awesome videos
Thank you much! Concrete is such a wonderful place it would be hard not to enjoy ti
I just found a book titled Men of Concrete Circa 1908-1970 A Pictorial Essay, Gary J Mosher is the author. It is completely about the cement plant and has a lit of pictures of the plant and it's employees, including several copies of the company newsletter. It tells all about the plant and it's history. I found several pictures of my grampa, two uncles, my dad and a few friends. I found it on Amazon, just in case you are interested. Maybe you could find it in the library if you want to put that much energy and time into reading about our history. I loved your video. 😁
Haha thank you. That is very fascinating. Believe it or not I think I have a friend who may have that book!
I’ve made countless paranormal centered videos about this town. One of my best friends is Jeremy’s (the bar owner) son. Great town with a great history.
Oh very cool. Definitely love this little town.
That video was awesome especially when the #mic broke lol. It’s Leeland. I laughed my ass off.
Leeland!!!!! Ahhh!! Haha it’s a terrible mic. Glad you enjoyed :)
I'm watching This Boys life right now.
This boys life brought me here!! Have u ever seen it??
😮 I have not seen it! But a few people have mentioned it. I’ve put it in the list!
I grew up in concrete! My Great Grandmother's dad was one of the ones to start the lumber mill!! I miss this place!
Doing some more research, my Great Grandmother's dad was the first mayor in 1909
That is amazing! I'm so glad to hear it was a special place for you and I hope you get to visit again.
This town was featured in an episode of Supernatural called Wishful Thinking in season 4. I thought it was pretty cool!
OK so you’re some interesting facts actually John Selin is my great great grandpa and we live in his house right now in concrete
Have you ever seen “This boys life”
Tobias Wolf lived in that town.
Awesome video!
Not yet! But it’s on the list! I’ve heard it’s a great film
@@TravelWithTatsit’s also a book true life story
strange town as I know drive through and stop off in frequently, about 25 miles from there.
I’m related to the first white woman born in concrete, her last name was Couples. My family has lived in that town for a long time, my grandma still lives there and I visit her frequently.
What a fun video! I especially love the part with the mayor. 😏
Haha thank you. :)
I sure love my hometown.
It’s a fantastic place
Ever met the real Dwight or his kids or Tobias Wolff ?
i live in that town, its tiny, but fun
Muy fun
Sorry the Museum was closed but it has been incredibly hard to get people involved in it. We basically have only five people who are still volunteering. It is more fun than people imagine.
Awww. I understand how that goes. I bet it’s fun!!
