There are countless myths and legends associated with Russia’s sprawling Lake Baikal. These include reports of a mythical monster which resides within its depths, and a hidden fortune in missing treasure. But by far the most intriguing of such tales, is an alleged encounter between the soviet army, and members of a mysterious underwater people. A race which has become known as the Lake Baikal Swimmers.

Okay, so... I'm not from Irkutsk, but I am a Russian biologist, and the real issue of lake Baikal is that its fauna is actually suffers from both mutations and horrible ecological state of the lake and that forces it to change. The paper plant (if I'm correct) and some other stuff on its shores belong to people who don't need to care of its status of a national park because they make the rules. Baikal is shallowing, dying. That's the scary part.

That is a crime against the earth itself if you ask me : Lake Baikal, located in Siberia, Russia, is the world's deepest and oldest freshwater lake. It reaches depths of approximately 1,642 meters (5,387 feet) and is estimated to be around 25 million years old.

Encountering giant 10ft underwater entities would have to be a traumatic experience, even the most top-trained soldier would have a nervous breakdown. Charles Hickson once said that when he was abducted, it’s a type of fear that indescribable since it’s from something that isn’t supposed to even exist. Once the aliens put him on the ship, he thought he would never set his feet on Earth again.

Baikal actually has very oxygen rich waters even at great depths, and the water column regularly mixes at least twice a year bringing nutrients and oxygen to the deeper portions. Because of this, two species of deepwater sculpins that are endemic to the lake, Abyssocottus korotneffi and Cottinella boulengeri are the deepest living freshwater species and have been found in the lowest parts of the lake at depths exceeding 1,600 meters. The amount of species and the total number of fish decreases as you go deeper as the number of nutrients drops, but Baikal supports life throughout.

Never heard of Lake Baikal Swimmers, but in my home region (Primorskiy Krai Russia) many people heard about a monthman type creature, which lives in the mountains, and was often seen/heard near the Pidan and Oblachnaya mountains. Locals say that it sounds like a screaming woman, it's dark and big, some hunters seen human footprints, but they were huge, at least 2 times larger than the average human's footprints. First reports about this creature were dated back to 1930's and then in mid 80's, 90's and mid 2010s. In fact I went to the Pidan mountain myself once for a hiking trip, and we had one local guide with our group, and he went up and down this mountains for decades quite often, and he said, that he heard this thing yelling, and saw something big and dark flying above the trees in a distance. But I'm a little skeptical about this though, but this mountain really does have a weird vibe, like some weird stone structures were found on it, and nobody knows what they were used for and other interesting stuff.

I've never heard of Lake Baikal before. The "Netflix" version of _"Unsolved Mysteries"_ recently told the story of the Lake Michigan UFO sightings in detail, interviewing many of the people who called 911 and the local weather bureau to ask about and/or report it. One officer was interviewed and, probably the most pivotal person who was a witness that day, the weatherman that tracked the UFOs on radar and was astonished by the seemingly ultrasonic movements of the objects. It was pretty spooky stuff.
(While the mysterious, ghostly, otherworldly stuff is always appreciated, I was wondering when there might be another "true crime" episode of _Bedtime Stories?_ I was going to say the last one I remember was the serial-killing couple, Fred & Rosemary West from the UK, but I guess the bizarre case of stalking and subsequent death of Cindy James, which was more recent on this channel, might also count as TC...)
